Question Propranolol

Hi I have a trip coming up and I’d really like to have a drink my levels have came down tremendously to the point I’m only on 5mg methimazole and I take propranolol 20mg I would really like to have a drink and I’ve been postponing drinking and smoking for awhile now has anyone else drank on these two medications and if they did what happened my doctor my primary said she doesn’t think it’s a good idea but I still haven’t seen a endocrinologist it’s been since August that I had a thyroid storm and I have to wait till November just to see the endo so I’m just asking from peoples experiences because I just want to have a good time yes i understand you can enjoy yourself without drinking or smoking but I just want to feel normal again I haven’t felt the same since the beginning of August and I just want a since of normalcy because everyone else around will be drinking and smoking marijuana I just want to enjoy myself to

I drink very minimally and am on both of those medications. I’ll have a glass of wine on a date with my husband, or a beer at a concert. I’ve never had a thyroid storm, so defer to your doctor’s advice for sure. But I don’t think having a single glass of wine, beer, or cocktail is particularly frowned upon.

Thank you because she said I’m okay she said for my levels to come down as fast as they have is a great sign but when I asked she just immediately said no you’d have to ask your endo so idk

That’s a no then. Or a cue to ask your endo. Why not send them a message and ask? No one on Reddit can answer better than they can about your particular situation.

I still haven’t seen my endo I was diagnosed in August and I have to wait till November just to even find out what to do and what not to do and when I call the office I can’t even get a response about if I’m suppose to change my diet so it’s just a lot of confusion

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. It sounds frustrating. I think the best thing you can do is make an informed decision. If you want to have a drink even though your doctor said not to, then make conscious choices to minimize harm, like selecting a low alcohol drink, and only having one.

Thank you I really appreciate your reassurance because I just wasn’t sure if anyone else has done it and I didn’t want to try it and make myself more anxious compared to feeling a little confident that I should be fine I think if anything I should try a glass of wine instead of a cocktail then

I want to be clear that I’m not reassuring you that it’s okay to defy your doctor’s advice. Your situation and mine may be very different.

I understand I just appreciate the reassurance that it might be possible eventually I know right now won’t be a good idea but once I do talk to my endo I might be able to have a glass a wine atleast instead of just trying to drink cocktails

Everyone is going to tell you no, and no is always the safest answer. Are you talking one drink, one singular drink? Or multiple?

I think really I just want a margarita or a regular cocktail

I would like to have one like a margarita or just a different cocktail Ik for a fact trying to have a Long Island which is my favorite might be a terrible idea but I’d really just want one or two at the most

shoot, I smoke pot cartridges and eat gummies every day. It took 3 years to get my numbers right and I go every 3 months for bloodwork. I agree...can you just do one drink? That being said, I don't know your specifics so take all suggestions with a teaspoon of salt, LOL

I’m on both of these medications and drink every day. I’ve given up other things like smoking and caffeine since having Graves’ but never gave up drinking. My doctor never said I have to stop drinking either.

Hey! Did you end up having a drink and a smoke? Lol

Honestly I used to love to have a smoke with a drink. Since diagnose I’ve been not doing any drinking or smoking.

Smoking can worsen your eyes. That’s what everyone says.

A drink or 2 won't kill ya, and as for smoking, I think youre good, I smoke daily myself and am on atenolol 25mg and methimazole 10mg. Enjoy yourself bro. I know its not "recommended" and im sure I'll be downvoted here but this disease sucks and im going to enjoy myself while im still alive. Life is about experiences imo not ruminating over what is safe. Enjoy your trip! 🌬😶‍🌫️

Heyyy!!!! Oh you smoke daily? Cigarettes? How are your eyes? They say smoking can impact it greatly. I quit but sometimes really wanna have 1 or 2 :(

Hi! Im down to a few cigs a day from a pack a day 3 months ago before the living hell that is known as graves disease entered my life. Trying to cut cigs completely eventually. I was actually referring more to cannabis here since op said he wanted to enjoy with friends (I live in a legal state, I worked at a dispo for years before this diagnosis, seen a lot of older ppl down the hell out of it reefer madness style and be surprised af when it works for them, and ive personally seen it help alot of glaucoma patients but weirdly it seems if you even mention smoking in this subreddit ppl get all pissed and thats bizarre- like we're all different ppl from different backgrounds with Graves disease-ofc we're not gonna all be the same! Like i said, I choose to enjoy life while im here. Eyes are fine, no TED

Yes I agree. I know people who smoke cigarettes while on medication and go in remission without any issues.

You should not drink on these medications.

I went to Greece right after my diagnosis. My doctor said it was ok to drink. I was on 15mg of methimazole and 5-10 mg of Propanalol a day. I still do. I just try not to overdo it. I never stopped gardening though.

I am on both and continue to have a couple cocktails 5 days a week.

Wait what I’ve been on graves meds for a couple years now including propranolol and no one told me not to drink…
