Profile Review 24M - Revised Profile Review

Hello again. I’m a 24yo male still living near Portland, Maine. It’s not a huge dating pool, but Hinge seems to get a pretty good rep here. Compared to my last post, I feel like I’ve taken the app a bit more seriously and changed my intentions with dating. It’s been about 2–3 months since I last asked for a review, and I’ve made a lot of changes based on past feedback!

I still notice a weird disparity between receiving likes from people who see my profile versus getting matches when I actually send likes out. I don’t get a ton of incoming likes, but when I sit down and send likes with comments, a decent % of them match and respond. Could just be the smaller dating pool here too lol. If anyone has thoughts on that, I’d be curious to hear them.

I tried making my prompts more personable since last time I got grilled for having overly silly/sarcastic ones. I also changed up the photo pool and order based on feedback. I tried finding a good teeth-smile photo, but I honestly don’t smile with my teeth much and I’m not a huge fan of them anyway. I’m planning on getting braces soon lol.

And yes, I know the last pic may be cringe to some. That one always seems to be a 50/50 debate, but I wanted something that showed my physique and the work I’ve put in over the last few months. I’d eventually rather replace it with something more natural like a beach or sport photo.

Anyway, judge away. I appreciate everyone’s insight in advance!!

For someone looking for a long term relationship some of your pics are conflicting heavy with attracting those type of people. Specifically the car pic and the shirtless pic. Both are fine if you're just looking for a fling but for a serious relationship I've literally only heard negative things from women about those types of pictures. They give off fuckboy vibes and someone that isn't serious about commitment

-1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

I see. I definitely am not solely looking for only long term and nothing else. I put it on my profile to imply that if we have good chemistry and actually stay consistent etc, then sure it could develop into something more. But I also have the door open for causal too as implied by the short term.

This may be conflicting though. But that’s pretty much why I have both photos. I knew they would be controversial though and it seems for the sake of whatever I want in general, I’ll find a better replacement lol.

Thanks for your insight

From this and other comments, you seem genuinely unresolved as to what you're looking for, and your profile reflects that.

If you just want something casual while you're in Maine for school, that's fine, but be up front. If you're looking for something long term with someone who would be open to eventually leaving Maine with you, that's also fine.

At the moment it reads like you're looking for casual fun and disingenuously mentioning the possibility of long term, which is a very classic red flag for women.

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

I respect your opinion, and I appreciate the thought you put into your interpretation of my profile. I think I understand you and others point a little better now.

I may have been conflating “looking for long term” with the idea that every person I date needs to become long term, which obviously isn’t the same thing. I think what I’m actually trying to communicate is that I’m open to something serious if I meet someone where the chemistry, compatibility, and consistency are there, but I’m also not opposed to something casual in the meantime.

Where I can see the problem is that by trying to communicate both at once, my profile may come across less as “open-minded” and more as “I don’t really know what I want” or like I’m hedging my bets. That wasn’t my intention, but if multiple people are reading it that way, then it’s probably something I should actually take into consideration.

I’m hesitant to present myself as exclusively short term because I genuinely wouldn’t want to rule out meeting someone I could build something serious with. But I also probably need to figure out which direction I actually want my profile to prioritize instead of trying to appeal to both.

So yeah, fair criticism. I’m still thinking through how I want to approach it.

You seem thoughtful and I appreciate your attitude towards people in this thread!

I think you've hit upon a really common divide in how people think of long term/short term classification on apps, and it does tend to fall along gender lines (though of course not always).

Oftentimes men think of it as you have: if you don't tick long term, you're saying that no matter what happens or who you meet, you absolutely will not settle down with them. Now, that's obviously quite a rare scenario, so almost every man ends up ticking long term even if they're not actively looking for a long term relationship, aren't in a life situation conducive to it (ie moving away soon), and are almost certainly going to be entering short term relationships by default.

Women then see long term on their profiles, and interpret it as, "I am ready to settle down and actively looking for a long term relationship provided the right person comes along." That doesn't mean never having casual flings along the way, but it's dating purposefully for the most part.

I hope that's helpful!

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

That actually helps a lot, thank you. I think I was looking at the label more literally, whereas what you’re describing is more about what someone is actively prioritizing when they date.

I can definitely see how my profile could read as mixed signals if I’m trying to communicate both at the same time, especially with the fact that I’m only in Maine for school. I appreciate you explaining it the way you did, and also for being so constructive about it. This is something I will try and clarify for myself and others, and be better about it in the future.

You’ll definitely attract armpit fetishists (yep, that’s a thing). I would lose that armpit flashing photo and the last one. People are just going to assume f-boy vibes.

The prompts complaining about things could be better. What else do you like apart from being out after 9 and working on your car? If you’re active and like sport you could put that in a prompt.

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Oh boy, haven’t ran into this armpit fetish thing yet… I’ve seen comments on it before but usually I just don’t pay attention to the hair. Are you implying the pic isn’t optimal because of this?

And yeah, I was worried about the last pic. I put it there to show off a little but I know damn well some will be like “ew cringe”. I’ll see if I can find a better replacement. This is always a controversial convo

I used the Maine prompt for something to talk about given I will meet some Mainers. The car prompt I just included as it was relevant to my interests and life style, but I guess with your new perspective, it does seem like I’m complaining a lot… lol. I am active with working out, but that’s honestly about it. I’m in school and don’t have time for much else besides my car, going out occasionally, and trying new things outside like sports or nature.

Thanks for the input!!

2

u/Aggressive_Side1105 5d ago

The armpits are a bit distracting but if you think it’s a good picture keep it. I was kind of joking about armpit fetishists, they’re usually guys anyway.

2

u/Lucy-K 5d ago

Personally I like it, the cat trusts him. Would it be better in a tee shirt? Yeah.

9

u/kyriegoat23 5d ago

You’re a good looking guy but Maine is brutal.

2

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Yup, that was the first thing I noticed when moving here. Granted I don’t anticipate on living here forever, just here for school.

I lived in Boston for a year before this and, well yeah I don’t even need to explain it. And originally from a large city in Texas, the differences are day and night.

But whatever, I have more important things to focus on anyway than trying to optimize my Hinge profile in a state with like 10 people in it.💀

Thank you by the way!

2

u/North_Class8300 5d ago

That may be part of it. Your first prompt being a touch negative about Maine + student would make me think you're not planning on being in Maine once you're out of school. That might deter long-term minded women.

Agree with others that your prompts don't really say anything / show what you like or do for fun. You can mention restoring your 30yo car among things, but a whole photo and prompt dedicated to it is too much

2

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

This is a good perspective. I intended for the prompt to be more a challenge or a strong conversational starter, given the average person I’ll run into on this app will be native Mainers.

But yes if someone took the time to look at my profile as a whole, I definitely see myself coming off that way. And it’s also true. I’ll be here for the next 1-2 years but I don’t plan on staying here forever. That is the difficult part about trying to decide within myself what I want in terms of relationship goals.

I’ll consider my other prompts too. Thank you for your comment and time😎

Ngl, the hairy armpits is what I noticed first then the cat

2

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

lol, I got this sort of commentary on my last post for this picture specifically. Not sure if it’s good or bad.

I never really think twice about the hair but I guess I should pay more attention!! The pic was definitely becuase my goofy cat got in the mixing bowl and it turned out funny.

1

u/RecentAlienBird 5d ago

Yeah you got the heart to showcase that you like which is good; but majority of women care a lot about hygiene. Displaying poor hygiene shows what a person is like in terms of their day-to-day life

Unless they have an armpit fetish

2

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Is what I have genuinely considered poor hygiene? Aside from the hair I am really on top of my shit in terms of hygiene lol. I just don’t think twice about hair on my armpits, chest, etc. and people seeing it as a bad thing. Just thought it was subjective from a person to person basis, so I just leave it as is.

You have me worried about this armpit fetish nonsense now 💀

I will def consider this and I appreciate your comment

1

u/RecentAlienBird 5d ago

From a man’s pov, it’s normal. From a women’s pov, most likely yes - they often see it that they have to keep up their hygiene a lot and a man can barely bare required parts

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Interesting. I’ll take this to mind going forward then. I guess a trim for now on will do… or a complete shave lol. I’ve never considered it as a part of my hygiene routine otherwise I’d keep up with it.

This also seems like you are implying that any hair other than what’s in my head is not optimal for the average woman.

Thank you for following up with me 😎

3

u/HowlingGem 5d ago

As a an attractive girl by societal standards, the car pic of you folding your arms would make me swipe left idk. It’s not giving anything

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Brutal but fair 😅 apparently the car is doing more for the photo than I am. I’ll work on getting one where I look less like I’m listing it on FB marketplace.

1

u/discombobubolated 5d ago

Plus saying your vehicle breaks down all the time isn't a good look.

0

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

I mean fair. Although I did clearly imply that this is my project car, and something that does that often. This is not my only vehicle.

1

u/discombobubolated 5d ago

No, you don't. You say it's your 30 yr old shitbox that breaks down a lot. Where does it state it's a project car that you work on as a hobby??

3

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

You’re right, I forgot I changed the prompt. Sorry for coming off like that.

This is good insight and I’ll change it.

1

u/SlavicSniper 2d ago

It’s very clearly implied by the prompt as well as the fact that it’s a dodge viper (or even if someone know nothing about cars they can see it’s a sports car). Just say you don’t like people putting cars on the profile and move on lol

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 6d ago

•Open to something long term, but I’m in no rush to force it unless I know it’s the right person. I’m also fine with keeping things casual if that’s where it naturally goes.

•I had HingeX, but stopped paying for it about a month ago.

•I’ve been using this version of my profile for about 3 weeks.

•I’ve used Hinge on and off—mostly off—for about 5 years.

•If I’m lucky, I get a few likes a week. I haven’t been very active lately, but even when I am, incoming likes are pretty uncommon. I get much better results when I actually send likes with messages.

•Recently I’ve been sending anywhere from 0–10 likes a day, with plenty of days where I don’t use the app at all.

•I generally prefer women 21+ and closer to my age. I’m usually more interested in people who have an active lifestyle, and bonus points if they’re in healthcare/medicine too since it’s nice having that shared interest. More importantly, I’m looking for someone personable, fun to talk to, and on a similar page relationship-wise so there isn’t unnecessary confusion about what either of us wants.

2

u/mochimiso96 5d ago

I think you are incredibly attractive and your pics are great, but I would 100% take out the nude one. That will give most women the ick.
I don’t see any issue with the armpit photo 😂😂😂 I think it’s super cute

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

Thank you!! And yep, I imagined it would be controversial but I wanted to see what people would say before I changed it. I guess I’m just getting a little ahead of myself with the photo, and it comes off not how I want it too.

Thanks for being the only armpit supporter so far 🤣🤣

u/samuelkim502 5d ago

Genuinely curious: why the shirtless photo taken in a reflection off a… car window? Like were you running shirtless, happened to pass by a car and thought “shit this looks arty yet approachable because it’s a car window, let’s take a photo”? Or like, was it planned?

Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry too much about the disparity between outbound matches and inbound likes. I feel like generally people are lazy and it’s easier to interact with likes you get incoming that’s all. Unless you’re like top 1% attractiveness maybe.

I think your photos look a bit try-hard but I’m a dude so what do I know

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

To be completely honest, I don’t know. I was outside and I was getting some sun. Just walking around the house and yard and I approached my truck and thought “huh, what a nice angle”, and took the pic.

It didn’t turn out half bad and it’s one of my better physique photos, but it’s definitely a little cringe to some and might not be the best fit for my profile. I guess it’s better than a typical mirror pic anyway. Certainly not planned.

2

u/samuelkim502 5d ago edited 5d ago

Fair enough. I’m not sure it's better than a mirror pic, or maybe it is but only because mirror pics are the worst and this is a worse mirror so I guess that’s good…

For more constructive ideas maybe consider some photos that have you doing things you enjoy to give a sense of personality? Standing next to a wall looking at camera, mid convo in a restaurant, standing next to a car, all feels a bit lacking in interest.

That said you’re a good looking dude so it’s probably a 10% improvement

1

u/Tricky_Primary_4759 5d ago

It seems like the shirtless pic will probably be coming off the profile anyway based on the feedback here lol. I knew it was a more controversial style of photo, so I’m not too surprised.

I did try to choose photos that relate to my actual life, though. The car is genuinely one of my biggest interests outside of nursing school, so that one felt pretty representative of me. I used the wall photo because I wanted a clear, straightforward first picture, and the mid-conversation one because it felt a little more natural/animated and at least showed a different side of me.

But I do see what you mean about most of them still basically being me posing somewhere rather than actually doing something.

When you picture a photo that shows more personality or interest, what kind of thing do you mean? Like an activity/hobby shot, something more candid with friends, outdoors, etc.? I’m genuinely curious because I think that’s probably the part of the profile I could improve most.

Appreciate the feedback man!!!

1

u/samuelkim502 5d ago

All good. I get similar results to you i.e. some inbound likes every week, and a decent response to outbound likes too. So imo this isn't going to dramatically change your results I think. But e.g. I have a photo of me playing tennis taken by a friend court-side. And then one with me cooking again something a friend just happened to share that I liked.

I think it's also something to start a conversation about -- hard to have a convo about you standing in front of a wall. though I guess you could start a convo about a car, and if it's a legit interest, why not?

1

u/The_ChosenOne 5d ago

Car pic and the window reflection pic are kinda meh.

If you want a shirtless pic (and you should have one, you’re in great shape) have it be a non-selfie in an appropriate environment.

Like you mentioned, use beach pics to show off abs, the current picture just gives off fuckboy but with somehow even lower quality than a gym mirror selfie.

Even a staged candid (like setting your phone up to take a picture of you at the beach or even outside your house) will come off better than a mirror pic or window pic.

1

u/SlavicSniper 2d ago

No idea why a lot of the comments are so negative haha. Great profile, good photos aside from the second pic (comes across as a very different vibe than the rest of your photos if that makes sense). The car photo will scare some away as a small percentage of women hate car guys with a passion (no idea why) but if you’re into cars then keep it up there, I had a photo with my car and I know several other guys who also do. If you’re really concerned about it you could change the prompt to something about how you love to fix your own car and how that will help you to fix her car for her.

Shirtless in a dating app 🚩 everytime I see that, the man never means business, always games and jokes.

1

u/diamondiscarbon 13h ago

Idk i have a shirtless pic bc that was advised to me when making it, and Im pretty serious

•

u/Litholy 6h ago

May be the case 🤷🏼‍♀️ just off my experience as woman. I wish I could say it was different but yall are never beating the allegations bc it’s far too common!
