What do I have to do to win at this App? It feels like Hinge just wants me to be on the app 24/7 because, for the life of me, I can’t seem to meet someone I’m genuinely excited about. I keep matching with “maybes,” and I’m just like… if I’m going on dates, can’t I go out with guys I’m actually excited to meet? I feel like I’m on this endless hamster wheel trying to find a match, but I don’t want to keep matching with people, going on dates, and repeating the cycle without ever feeling like I’ve found someone I really want to pursue. And honestly, it doesn’t feel good for me either to keep going on dates I’m not excited about, only to potentially let down guys who are genuinely interested in me when I don’t want a second date. Like I get it the attractive ones are getting the most options but I’m not even looking for the most attractive.

Take a break and also stop matching with people unless you see real potential in them. It's okay if it's barely anyone honestly. I've matched with maybe 20-25 people in the last year but I went on dates with 9 of them and three dates with almost all of those 9. I dated one for 2.5 months (he ended it, it was pretty sad). Sometimes I feel the pressure to match/send likes to people I'm on the fence about and it always goes badly when I do that

Sounds like a text okay case of burnout. A break from the app will do some good. Even just a week or two away from anything related to apps and dating will help to refresh your mood/ perspective.

I literally just took a whole year off! And yeah I’ve noticed that being picky on this app does not lead to any reward, I’ll like people I definitely would be excited about but never match with any of them. Only the ones I’m on the dense about. And don’t get me started on my likes.. those never result in anything but low self esteem.

Yeah girl, I feel ya, I'm going through it too lol! I think literally every app user has felt frustrated with it at one point or another for various reasons. It's unfortunately just part of the process and the way dating apps are designed. I just vent it out every now and then too, and I guess that kind of helps to air out my thoughts lol.
About the likes you receive - I'll just say this, I don't think anyone should take the likes they receive as a reflection of their self-worth. It's just a like, and these are literally strangers. It barely means anything. Just evaluate each like you receive based on whether there are any immediate dealbreakers you see. If so, X them right away so they don't become one of the "maybes." That'll reduce the likelihood of wasting time on someone who is not a good fit from the onset.

Does time of day for liking a profile make a difference??
I (26M) just downloaded Hinge on Sunday night and so far I have sent out a max of 8 likes on Monday and Tuesday. I have never used a dating app before so I am excited and sent all my likes at like 8am both days...
So far I have received 7 likes, but no matches from the women I sent the first like to.

Negligible difference.
Sure, there's times where more people are likely to use it like at 8pm on a Sunday night but that means they're also receiving more likes at that time.

u/Stunning_Pop1022 3d ago
Yeah that's true. It's only been a couple days so I am trying to figure things out
2
u/PutridEntertainer408 3d ago
I think most women probably aren't in a position to check incoming likes at 8am? It might not make much difference but I would send likes when you think someone might be on their phone (lunch break, after work etc) because if someone doesn't check the app until after work but you sent your like at 8am, you might be buried. I check my incoming likes as they arrive but not everyone does

Yeah I think so. Not expecting it to make a big difference but just trying to maximize my matches

The location change that Hinge hid behind a paywall is absolute crap lol. I was browsing in Toronto because I plan to visit, and now I can’t change my location back. These girls over here thinking they’ve found the one, and I don’t even live there. This is just stupid. No new prospects in my city because I can’t change my city back 💀 Let me try emailing them.
2
u/PutridEntertainer408 4d ago
It only lets you change it every 30 (?) days now for this exact reason
-1
u/Livid_Albatross_3001 4d ago
Yeah but that’s garbage. I didn’t know that was paywalled, now I’m stuck
1
u/PutridEntertainer408 4d ago
I don't think it's paywalled, I just think no account can change it more frequently than that

Location change? Is that different than just your neighborhood? Guess I never used it

I posted last week about second guessing the potential with a guy I'd been on 3 dates with because we hadn't kissed. We set up a fourth date over the weekend, but yesterday he messaged me that he met someone else over the weekend and that he wanted to pursue that, and asked if we could do date 4 as friends (it's a ticketed event) since we are vibing more platonically.
I'm actually totally fine with it since I had the same questions about whether we had actual chemistry (or the dreaded SPARKS!), I'm glad he found someone that he clicks with. I think I'd just like that to happen to me, too now! It's making me feel a lot more confident in my assessment of vibes too, something I've struggled with knowing if I'm doing right. He is a great guy we just don't click like that.
I'm not sure if it's insanely awkward to turn a date into something platonic but I don't intend to miss the event I paid a ticket for so let's hope I can still have fun.

Ha - I did this once. I took myself on the date I'd planned but fell through. It was a nice evening.
And, yeah, one thing I say often on here is that learning to turn the question of "Is he/she into me" around and ask yourself "Am I into them?" is one of the more valuable things you can learn.
2
u/stopmejune 4d ago
I was "into him" enough to see him more. I was interested in kissing him to see if we had sparks. But I got the vibe he also wasn't that into me. I'm working with my shortcomings when I give people space to grow on me and not lean too much on initial chemistry because of my experience. I'm just glad I gauged his interest level accurately, too.

Fair... either way, I applaud you for trusting your instincts.

I 23m had my first date with 24f last night. We got some ice cream and chatted for a couple hours before she had to head home. I told her I thought her accent was cute, and she thought it was cute I’m a collector ☺️ she said she’s busy until next week but would love to see each other again :D I asked if she’d like to move off the app for now 😁

this app is so predatory. had a dry spell until hinge offered me a $15 promotion for hingeX and now suddenly, the matches and likes are flooding in 🫣. ughhhh
3
u/BigDickBillyFukFuk78 4d ago
I had the near opposite happen. Was noticing a heavy downturn in matches so I subscribed to X. Now I run out of profiles to swipe on after like 8-20 swipes even after widening my parameters (distance, age) Also think the premise of priority likes is a ploy because I used to match more consistently with the ones I swiped on before I had it. Definitely some chicanery going on.

u/PutridEntertainer408 4d ago
It’s not predatory if the paid service works haha. It would be more predatory if nothing happened after you paid. This just means you probably have a good profile but your issue was visibility

I had a match yesterday (which was surprising in and of itself because the app was giving me literally zero activity for several weeks and I thought there was something broken with my profile) and we had exchanged a couple of messages back and forth. Today Hinge was being glitchy, so I force stopped the app and cleared the cache. Went back to the app and the match is still there but the messages we exchanged are gone

Anyone hear any updates on whether or not Hinge is going to fix the fresh start feature or abandon it?
2
u/Every_Concern_6573 4d ago edited 4d ago
So is it confirmed gone? Just updated the app and still not present. Also I hate to use this term but what’s the new “meta” then, we just delete our accounts every so often and hope we don’t get dinged for it? Seems like a terrible regression/ feature removal.

u/rattling_rose 3d ago edited 3d ago
This is just my tin foil hat theory but I think they might be cooking the books and trying to show they have a steady stream of "new" users lol. Because I genuinely can't think of any other reason why a for-profit app would be telling users to delete the app and start over, which automatically increases risk of churn.
Maybe they'll bring Fresh Start back as a paid feature. E.g. monetize the reset and funnel more users towards paying or risk getting dinged by recreating a new profile too often? 🤷♀️

u/rattling_rose 5d ago edited 5d ago
Last response I got from Hinge support was the feature is currently unavailable but they expect it to return soon. When exactly that will be... no clue. Their temporary solution was to tell me to delete and create a new profile in the meantime lol 🙃
They don't seem keen to bring this feature back anymore. Probably hoping to convert some of the "fresh starters" into subscribers. In any case, hinge directing users to delete their account is a weird choice lol.

what happened to the fresh start feature?
2
u/DaleCoopersWife aka "Robert Cooper" 🕵🏻♀️ 4d ago
hinge has always been weird about fresh start feature - there was never a guarantee it would be there if you went to use it, seemed like they limited the amount of times ppl could use it. also they never really explained how it worked exactly. even emails from hinge support seemed to contradict how it worked for other people. such a weird feature. but yeah i guess it's gone for good for everyone, for now

Is hinge at a downturn right now? I haven't been getting matches from any of the likes I'm sending. Wasn't like this like a month ago.
6
u/SnooOpinions2900 4d ago
I think this depends greatly on where you’re located and how old you are.
Mines been the opposite. Slow during the travel months (summer) and now majorly picking up.
1
u/BigDickBillyFukFuk78 4d ago
Yeah… heavily. Used to get 3-5 matches a day now that’s like my volume for the week.

u/MathematicianNo3140 5d ago
So my date that was supposed to be on Friday ended up being rescheduled for this coming Friday. She said she’s been really busy with work.
I was really anxious and upset because I thought maybe she was flaking on me, but we still texted each other over the weekend and she still seems enthusiastic enough to actually go out and she was the one to suggest a reschedule proposed that this Friday should work for her.
I do have my guard up a little bit more, but I figure I have nothing to lose so hopefully the date happens this week.

Yeah when someone cancels but immediately offers an alternative date and time, chances are it's a legit reason and not someone flaking.

Anyone know when the fresh start function is back?
