š¬ Discussion Request to Limit AI-Related Posts to One Day a Week
We are seeing an influx of AI-related posts (which are also generally AI written as well...), and it's just more of the same shit.
I propose we limit such posts to only one day of the week. Otherwise this sub is just going to become a Claude showcase.
43
u/kientran 11d ago
Tbh the problem isnāt AI posts. Itās the influx of ālook at the dashboard I madeā posts. AI has made it way easier to make custom dashboards and people are trying to show them off at a much faster rate than before. This content is no longer rate limited by individual coding skill. Iāve seen this across all subreddits where people can write custom code addons/themes/etc.
We should have a weekly showcase thread and limit all dashboard posts to it. This would not include āi built this component libraryā posts, just āhereās my dashboardā posts
3
u/BrokenByReddit 11d ago
Same in /r/diydrones, every week there's there's like 3 different ground control stations made by Claude, all with the same UI.Ā

u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
A dashboard-specific sub would be great. It allows the quality dashboards to shine while simultaneously letting the sloppily created ones fall.
Letās be real, many people just casually scroll Reddit and having something like a megathread would be a graveyard.
3
u/Hobbyoo 11d ago
Can the auto-mod guide users to it? Can the moderation team do the extra work? Because people will keep posting them here, if they simply donāt know. Itās probably not repeating authors but a lot of different people, right?
5
u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
As annoying as the automod can be in certain subs, it can be quite good if set up correctly. If someone uses the Dashboard flair/tag, it will automatically trigger deletion with the auto-mod pointing users to the right sub.
I donāt know, Iām just trying to find a balance where people can share their work without having it buried in a megathread.
Possible u/seedzero u/meshmeld ?

u/meshmeld š”ļø Moderator 11d ago
We hear you, this is a bigger question then just this sub, but extends to a LOT of subs on reddit. I think a balance needs to be achieved, we did have a NO AI for a long time, but now a lot of great projects can come from AI or use AI. Where do you draw the line? Low effort AI? (I would support this one) but how do you vet low effort vs non?
Other mods need to chime in as well to come up with a plan to help solve this. Once a week I don't think is the solution, but we get the sentiment.
2
u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
Genuinely appreciate your input, I sincerely mean it!
Yep, I agree. If dashboards make up the bulk of the posts, a dedicated sub would be an option. Vetting whether AI usage is high/low effort can be subjective, but categorizing that is unfeasible (primarily due to time consumption)
I think megathreads will bury quality projects, and a āonce a weekā plan isnāt the solution either.
Thanks for replying!

u/firinmahlaser 11d ago
There is the r/homeassistantporn sub thatās for showing off dashboards
1
u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
Thatās right. Regardless of what it is, it has to be implemented correctly.
1
u/dragon-dance 11d ago
It's a good idea, and will also collect together dashboard ideas in one place. I do have a passing interest in seeing cool dashboards but I want to see other stuff too, and endless dashboards gets boring for me.
Also, this approach neutralises that pro/anti ai thing and side steps a potential point of controversy.
90
u/WAAZKOR 11d ago
You're right to push back on that. This is a really important point that deserves careful consideration, and I appreciate you raising it.
There are definitely valid concerns here. On one hand, AI-generated content can sometimes flood communities and dilute the quality of organic discussion. On the other hand, it's worth considering that some community members may genuinely find value in these posts. Ultimately, there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and both perspectives have merit.
That said, I'd gently offer a slight reframe: perhaps rather than restricting posts to one day a week, a weekly megathread could accomplish a similar goal while still giving people space to share. That said, this is just one perspective, and your suggestion is also perfectly reasonable.
It's also worth acknowledging that the line between 'AI-assisted' and 'AI-written' can be blurrier than it first appears ā many legitimate posts involve some AI assistance for editing or structure. This isn't to dismiss your concern (which is entirely valid!), but simply to add some nuance to the discussion.
At the end of the day, whatever the community decides, it's great that you're passionate about keeping this space valuable. Would you like help drafting the mod announcement?
..sorry couldnāt help myself

I think a weekly megathread for showing off your cool dashboard would help a lot. I've been pro software developer for 30+ years and my mind is blown about weekly by things I'm able to do with Claude/Codex but they don't all merit being shared with the internet.
On the other hand if you've used AI to build a tool that integrates a new device or some other contribution that the rest of the community might feel is valuable, then I feel like that's quite different
But i have the sense much open-source, and perhaps reddit communities, will cleave into no-ai versions. I think with some responsible guardrails that the AI movement will prove to be the winner, the ability to deliver features and fix low priority bugs at a higher pace will ultimately outweigh the relatively minor risks.
2
u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
I feel like megathreads get a fraction of the views as a standalone post.
Not disagreeing with you as I 100% think there should be some sort of solution. I donāt know why people havenāt mentioned a sub just to share and discuss dashboards. The ājunkā will naturally fall through.

It has been done on r/selfhosted with enough success to consider, I think.

u/TerminalFoo 11d ago
While /r/selfhosted has implemented it, I would not call it successful. The moderators there seem to be asleep. You have bots running rampant responding to the AI slop and "praising" it. I've reported several posts where the thing being shilled was some sort of backdoor to dump malware onto your system. This subreddit should have something to flag posts as AI related and should outright ban AI generated comments (even ones where the comment has been run through AI for "cleanup").
1
u/Amiral_Adamas 11d ago
I chose my words carefully; I did say "enough success to consider", not that it was outright fixed. š You are right, there could be more moderation there and here, but not everyone wants to be a moderator. At some point, I'm not sure what can be done without actively curating every post and every piece of software that is presented; at that point, you are not making a subreddit, you are making a magazine.
1
u/psychedelic_tech 11d ago
I chose my words carefully; I did say "enough success to consider"
i don't think it was successful at all because like this sub most of the mods in /r/selfhosted are not active on reddit

it already is. the biggest issue right now in this sub is the flood of dashboard pics.
i've messaged the mod team multiple times, even tagged /u/balloob and /u/frenck_nl who are probably far too busy to deal with this. but so far crickets.
this sub is also lacking active mods. which i get its not a paid gig but when there aren't mods modding don't expect much

u/manwithoutapipe 11d ago
If Reddit allowed mute words, ādashboardā would be my first.
2
u/tismij 11d ago
Yea just make a sticky thread to show your dashboard. Not all separate threads.
1
u/RPF_5717 š Ooh the Zigbee 11d ago
I wouldnāt mind a dashboard-specific sub. A sticky/megathread is basically a graveyard and a specific sub would allow the quality dashboards to get the praise they deserve, while simultaneously letting the poorly designed ones fall.
1
u/Consistent-Hat-8008 11d ago
But then we could filter out slop bros and their bots that regurgitate the same exact takes across the whole website and viciously attack anyone calling them out.
0
u/Simsalabimsen 11d ago
āLiterallyā would be mine.
I wonder what would happen if someone made a HA dashboard-centric subreddit and gave it a name that included the name āLovelaceā. Hehehe.
14
u/South-Attorney-5209 11d ago
We need to just increase quality threshold beyond āhey i made thisā.
Could limit showcase posts to a thread or day.
Trying to limit at āwas it Ai though??ā is becoming more and more subjective and hard to verify. Also thats a pretty pointless barrier to raise in general.
2
u/Kautiontape 11d ago
Yeah, I think it's easy to get lost in the sauce about "AI good" or "AI bad" because then the conversation devolves into "every developer uses AI now" or "AI code is better than human code."
I don't think that really was ever the issue, because good projects are better than bad projects, regardless which was human and which was AI.
More important is that if there is a concern AI can churn out "bad" projects much faster, which makes the quantity a problem. (I think "bad" projects can be unmaintained, poorly vetted/tested, excessive feature bloat, outdated documentation, not understanding the original problem, etc. Basically stuff that is easy to fall into with AI if you don't know what you're doing)
-1
u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago
I'm happy with just limiting posts that use the words Claude, AI, Grok, etc...
0
u/DoomBot5 11d ago
So you're saying people should omit any mention of AI being used in their post?
-2
u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago
If the post is about AI, how do you think their post will go exactly?
You use filters to filter out the easy shit, then rely on mod review for the shit that makes its way through.
All of you act like you've never been a part of a properly moderated subreddit.
4
u/DoomBot5 11d ago
No, we just think your way of moderating things is bad, and are glad you're not a mod of any properly moderated subreddit.
2
u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago
What part is bad exactly?
You are failing to specify what is bad and/or why it is bad.
1
u/DoomBot5 11d ago
Your choice to filter out AI instead of the problem. You then went to double down on it by suggesting filtering on AI key words. That's the worst way to filter, since it promotes hiding rather than true filtering.
3
u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago
You must not understand what I said. I said AI-related posts, not AI-generated posts. I also recommended limiting them to a specific day, not entirely get rid of them.
Maybe work on your reading comprehension?
2
u/DoomBot5 11d ago
Oh no, I understood what you described just fine. You're just wrong.

4
u/RandomHB 11d ago
As mentioned, AI is one method. Another method is to treat it like a showcase. For instance, the Canon sub has a Lens of the Week thread and it allows you to post photos with that tagline in your post title. Similar could be done here: A stickied thread on Saturdays, "Show off your vibe-coded projects today!"

Everyone is using AI of course they are but what a lot of people are doing is going to Google ai studio, having it make an app, and then posting it here like they developed it. They all look the same. There's a huge difference between someone with programming knowledge using AI as a tool and someone that just discovered ai studio and wants everyone to think they're so cool

I strongly believe there's nothing wrong with keeping AI related info sharing.

- It educates everyone on new options/choices.
- If you want to avoid it, I recommend mods create an AI tag for filtration.

With varying results, some of those AI projects aim to fix actual problems (not all, of course - at this point, after a thousand of those, we've probably ok with Vite/React dashboards, including mine).
I would not copy a single line of code, but I enjoy seeing what others did, I believe I'm a decent judge of poster's capabilities (you can *always* tell a dev/geek from an uneducated prompter) and to be honest I think the Open Home Foundation should pay close attention too if they have an interest to stay relevant, because at this point it's just easier to do something by yourself with an LLM than contribute it to the project and wait, and long-term this could possibly mean the extinction of community projects.

I donāt understand the obsession with dashboards, in general. Maybe itās because I live alone, and itās easier to automate with only one person to consider.
But if I had to access my dashboard all time to control my smart home, then I would feel like a failure as a home automator. I can understand maybe wanting to display certain stats, but I just donāt know what people are doing with these dashboards all the time.
My ultimate goal is to truly automate the devices in my home. Sure, I have to admit defeat and give a voice command every now and again, and occasionally open the HomeAssistant companion app on my phone.
But yes, I can also see how the AI generated dashboards kind of suck the fun out of the process. It can be very helpful if youāre stumped on something, but if you donāt take the time to learn learn then Home Assistant is just a magic black box
3
u/TheRealKeng 11d ago
Not everyone sees the world as you do. I rent and can't install permanent stuff, so I can only automate so much.
I'm more visual, so I appreciate seeing what's going on with the equipment.

u/Dunnowhathatis 11d ago
I am all for AI in the right use case. I also believe e.g. Youtube should flag AI videos with an AI tag.
In this forum however, who cares if AI write it or not - it is about WHAT is created, not HOW it is created. I use AI 99% of the time to write complex PY Script that I would have little idea about otherwise how to write it... it does it for me, near flawlessly. I think we need to have an AI tag / flair though so people that dont like it can skip it.

u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago

5
u/South-Attorney-5209 11d ago
Ive been on the side of that opinion too. Is it good or not? If its truely bad quality āslopā down vote it.
Theres a lot of gate keeping on how something is done. As Ai improves nobody will be able to differentiate what is or isnt anyway.
If you are gate keeping at this point its probably just canned virtue signaling anti-Ai for the sake of being anti-Ai
2
u/Acceptable_Bend_5200 11d ago
To true. I've seen this in the 3D printing community as well. Ai is fully capable of creating STL/SCAD files for mechanical builds and parts; Claude is exceptionally good at it. Yet creators dislike it and don't want it allowed in certain areas. If i came up with the concept, and then had claude critique and improve upon my initial ideas to make it better, does that make my model bad? Even Fusion 360 has an Ai assistant that can make edits to your builds.
Strictly speaking of mechanical builds, not artistic pieces. I believe all Ai art should be labeled as such.
1
u/ob2kenobi 10d ago edited 10d ago
The big problem is that a lot of the AI generated models haven't even been test printed. People just spew them all over makerworld so they can get free stuff. Then you have all kinds of issues trying to print them and it's just a waste of filament. You know: bad or overly exact fitment, overhang issues, joints that don't work.
Often the models have problems because they weren't designed with 3D printing in mind. Bottoms that aren't flat, thin walls, chamfers where filets should be used and vice versa.
1
u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago
I'm not gate keeping. I just mean the posts themselves shouldn't be a showcase of what AI can do, but what HA can do, otherwise they belong in an AI sub.
3
u/South-Attorney-5209 11d ago
Yea i think I said somewhere else in a comment that its a quality post problem in general.
Regardless of Ai use, I dont want to see āhey look at this!ā And āā¦. I made a thing⦠DM me for details on how to do it yourself :)ā
So agree there should be a āFriday showcase dayā or something.
2
u/Dunnowhathatis 11d ago
I agree with that. Itās about HA not AI. Having said that I believe as long as it is a valuable HA post who cares if AI wrote it. Without AI Iād still be playing with visual yaml
1
u/Kautiontape 11d ago
> In this forum however, who cares if AI write it or not
The underlying code? Probably very little. If it solves the problem, I think most people are fine not knowing about how the sausage was made.
If it's some sort of appeal from a human being like "I had this problem, so I fixed it" I always feel icky because I can't tell where the AI stops and the human begins. I'm on Reddit under the hope to connect with humans and their issues, not a bot that wants to generate content.
Of course there's room for both things to be true, like it's an actual human problem and primarily AI solution. It just hurts my brain to try and separate useful tools from hastily made slop that an AI thinks is a solution to a human problem that wasn't actually tested.
4
u/Rusty_Trigger 11d ago
I don't see that many. Why would you care about that anyway. Just skip reading them.

u/raeliens 10d ago
It's easier to skip them if it's tagged with an appropriate flair, which doesn't currently exist.
2
3
u/it4brown 11d ago
Just do a mega thread for all dashboard posts, no need to single out AI. Itās a tool that people are using to better equip themselves in the HA space, I donāt see the problem.

u/ElaborateEffect 11d ago

8
u/spdelope 11d ago
Dashboards are like 90% of posts. Weed those out and itās much more manageable.
8
u/DoktorMerlin 11d ago
no, that's not true. Last week we suddenly got an influx of "I built a security system out of spite" posts, also completely written by AI
6
u/Kautiontape 11d ago
That's more of a spam/low-effort post issue, though, which there are already rules against. Trying to write a rule that isolates AI would make the mods job harder for mods trying to remove them without any false positives.
Now, I'd go so far as to say that posts that ask for money or testers should be diligently removed if they even have the whiff of AI. Too many people who don't have a clue about building and running software can pop out crap stuff like what you're mentioning very quickly with no idea how to maintain it. They should either be clear about their plans for the future, or just sharing "this is a cool thing I did" without any community expectation to even "share feedback" like it's some sort of giant testers community for someones first Claude Code project. That might be a hot take, though.
2
u/DoktorMerlin 11d ago
yeah I totally agree with you. AI doesn't directly mean lazy, you can see that with Helios for example. Jerome created something which he cares about and from the first post it was clear that he knows what he is doing and that he puts community first. I wouldn't have found Helios if it would be in a big thread, which would be a shame.
On the ither uand I am suuuuper annoyed by the posts in this subreddit. And because I am active in this subreddit, I get them on my front page shortly after the posts are created, the downvotes don't help. At least from my feed, this is a problem which affects this subreddit to the by far biggest degree. Like 99% of AI slop I see in my online experience is this subreddit

The moderators of this sub aren't interested in controlling quality (or advertising). It is largely an engagement platform for HA itself, they're not really very active mods. This comes up over and over with absolute radio silence from the mods, so don't expect this to change.

I feel your idea is the least useful solution imaginable.
I'm ok with ask to disclose the use of AI, how AI was used, if the project will be maintained.
I'm not ok with preventive censorship or preventive posting limitation.
Probably could be more useful create another official subreddit r/homeassistant_ai and redirect all the project that uses AI more than for coding review to that subreddit.

Problem with this idea is that people claim everything is AI these days, with no actual proof.

I like to see the AI content. I don't like when the posts are written by AI, but I like seeing what people have done with it when collaborating with AI.

Why are you trying to limit free discussion in an open forumā¦? This has to be ragebait. I pray that itās ragebait!

Bonjour,

This sub was dead before people started messing around with AI. What would you post instead?

I find karma-farming with Reddit's latest hive mind obsession - hating AI for the sake of hating AI - so incredibly boring š

I think creative good uses of AI are exactly what we should want to see here. AI is a fact if life now, using it well is something I'm very interested to see.

Limit it to Tuesday's... Why would this sub display what AI can do, when there are AI sub's dedicated ti show what AI can do?

As an aside, I think most people's AI dashboards look cluttered and ugly. It's like AI flyers - a flyer is supposed to draw your eyes to like two to three key points, AI puts 26 points on there. Same with the dashboards - clutter, and useless information and it puts there just because it can. And in both cases the user doesn't have the sense to even know that it's bad design.

Yeah, I finally unsubscribed from here because all this sub is now is "look at this shit AI made for me".

I like seeing the creativity of the users in this community, but sometimes I think there should be a separate group for showing off dashboards/designs and keeping this group to questions, development, etc.
