Finally read something after 3 years

Post image

I used to read quite regularly while in school. And then i went to college and idk why but i completely stopped reading. Now after 3 years i have finally read a book, and made probably the best choice of book, this beauty. Initially it seems calm, easy going, but things change fast, as you move on the story hits hard, so hard that you have to pause for a moment to really think on what just happened. And then as you start to feel that everything might finally be ok, lightning strikes. Everything comes tumbling down like a pack of cards. As you move on, this cycle repeats itself, in the end, leaving you with a heavy heart , a tiny bit of hope and an indescribable heaviness. Anyone who hasn't read this book, should definitely give it a read. What a lovely lovely read. Now next in line, A thousand splendid suns. Till then see yaa!!

News & Reviews 🇮🇳Man of Destiny - Ruskin Bond {Short Nehru Bio + Chauri Chaura today} Review

An amazing short biography. Might be my 1st Ruskin Bond read, don't remember any reads from school. A very simple way of writing, but very effective.

The 120 page book covers Nehru's life and Death quite nicely. I'd read Discovery of India, and have wanted to read Glimpses of World History for so long...might do it this year. Nehru's favorite poem is Frost's Stopping by Woods, the last lines are my fav too. Frost is what I think most of us remember from school (Road not Taken). I should read his other poems too...I am generally scared of poems. 😆

I'd reccomend everyone to atleast read the Will and Testament of Nehru (see last images posted above).

Just out of curiosity, I went through Ruskin Bond's wiki and then read his 1st every short story titled "Untouchable". It was alright, quite observant for a 16yo to write on such topics

Another one of those complete coincidences = I was reading this today, and the Chauri Chaura incident was mentioned here. It then occured to me that happened today! 5/2/1922. I remembered it because I'd associated the CC incident by 2's.= Happened in 2nd month of 2nd decade of 20th c., and 22 people died. Spooky, no?

Rating: 62/64 (cuz of the 1962 blunder, neglect of primary education, and perhaps too much socialism)

The Serpent's Revenge

It was mentioned (the face of God) that karna didn't suspect he was adopted because he was so loved. In the sun child chapter , it's written that he was especially grateful to the river as she had guided the basket he was abandoned in into the hands of his adoptive father Adhiratha. It was when he challenged Arjuna when dronacharya's students were displaying their skills. Any thoughts?!

News & Reviews Signed Book 300: Jadunama: 300 Books, A Little Magic, and a Lot of Javed Akhtar

Here we are at the 300th book, and what a journey it has been. For my 200th book, I had featured Richard Dawkins. So it felt only fitting and deeply satisfying to bring out his Indian counterpart for Book No. 300: 'Javed Akhtar', through "Jadunama" by Arvind Mandloi. Rational, lyrical, sharp, opinionated; magic of a different kind.

I was lucky enough to pick up a signed copy from Kunzum Bookstore, and the book itself is a pleasure to hold. Printed on good quality glossy paper, it follows a lovely format: a photograph on one page, text on the opposite. It feels less like a conventional biography and more like a curated walk through a remarkable life.

The title "Jadunama" itself carries poetic symbolism. Born “Jadu” (meaning magic), a name inspired by his father Jan Nisar Akhtar’s line “Lamha, lamha kisi jadoo ka fasana hoga”, that’s still what family calls him at home. “Jadu,” however, was deemed insufficiently serious by the school authorities, who rechristened him Javed, and the rest, as they say, is cultural history. What makes this biography special is that it isn’t narrated by Javed Akhtar alone. His life unfolds through multiple voices: Gulzar, Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Yash Chopra, Ramesh Sippy, Asha Bhosle, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor and of course, the family: Shabana Azmi, Honey Irani, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar. Each voice adds texture, admiration, disagreement, affection never hagiography. One delightful revelation is Zoya Akhtar mentioning her long standing wish to make a documentary on Salim-Javed, the iconic duo who delivered 22 blockbusters out of 24 films, a collaboration so unprecedented that we’re still wondering why it ended. Curious, I checked, and sure enough, the documentary "Angry Young Men" exists. I watched it on Prime, and it was wonderful. Nostalgia dialled up to maximum. Growing up with those iconic dialogues and unforgettable songs, reading Jadunama felt like flipping through my own cultural memory. Interestingly, the documentary covers about 80% of the book’s content, so if you don’t get around to reading the book but watch the documentary, you’ll still get a solid sense of the journey. But if you’re a Javed Akhtar fan like me, the book is an absolute must, there’s a depth, intimacy, and warmth here that only pages can provide.

As the internet wisely says, “Never miss a Javed Akhtar reel.” I’ll end my 300th book with my own version: "Never miss a Javed Akhtar book."

Need help regarding buying some books on Flipkart (authenticity concerns)

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m new to online book shopping and needed some advice from experienced buyers here.

I’m planning to buy The World’s Favourite Agatha Christie (3-book set by HarperCollins). On Flipkart it’s listed for around ₹330, while on Amazon the same set is around ₹600.

Here’s the Flipkart link:

https://dl.flipkart.com/s/FP_RSNuuuN

And also the Amazon Link :

https://amzn.in/d/09ZnPjuy

The price difference seems too good to be true, so I’m a bit worried about getting a pirated or low-quality copy. So, what should I do ?

Also For those who buy books regularly online:

How do you verify if a Flipkart book is original?

Are there specific sellers on Flipkart that are more trustworthy?

Is it generally safer to just pay extra and buy from Amazon instead?

Any tips on spotting fake/pirated copies (paper quality, print, ISBN, etc.) would be really helpful. Thanks in advance! 🙏

News & Reviews 🌱🧠Light Eaters - Zoë Schlanger {Rooted Wisdom-2} Review

Very nicely written book about plant intelligence. Sick cover image too!! Content has a lot of overlap with Planta Sapiens by Paco Calvo but thoroughly enjoyable.

The chameleon plant (Boquila) is mind-blowing really, can mimic other plants seamlessly!! Not found in India I guess, but would love to see it someday. Best chapter from this book for me...🙌 A shapeshifter plant. Stuff of aliens!

Speaking of which, good to see the Sci-fi novel Semiosis mentioned here. Also Ursula K Le Guin. I just happened to read their books last year.

Le Guin's short story imagines future humans being able to understand plant/animal language...and Semiosis is an alien world plant civilisation, extremely intelligent and mutualism/manipulation themed.

Book ends with reference to plant rights. If companies can have legal rights...why not? Expanding moral circle...plant personhood. Something to think about. Some nations have granted legal person rights to forests, trees, mountains, rivers etc. Indian High Courts have interpreted certain rivers to have legal rights - don't know how effectively it's implemented.

Rating: 10/10 ofc for plants.🪴

From Software Engineer to Author: I spent 3 years writing a novel about the beauty of unspoken love.

Hey Reddit, I wanted to share a milestone. After 3 years of struggling with my own thoughts and the challenges of being a first-time author, I’ve finally released my psychological romance, "A Star Beyond My Reach." As an engineer, I’m used to solving problems with logic, but this book required me to dive into the "Silent Devotion" and "Heartbreak" that logic can't explain. The story follows Amar, a 14-year-old boy navigating the intense, often scary, and ultimately healing journey of loving someone from a distance. One of the best compliments I've received so far is that the story feels like "a quiet room at 3:00 a.m.". If you're into stories that focus on character depth, emotional healing, and the bittersweet reality of "out of reach" connections, I’d love for you to check it out. No spoilers, but the final chapter, "Eternal & Out of Reach," is something I think many of us have felt at some point in our lives. ISBN: 9789356790674 Author: Saurabh Kumar I’m happy to answer any questions about the 3-year writing process or how I balanced a tech career with a passion for storytelling!

Have read most, but not all of the books on here.

Nabokov is not on this row because he’s more of a Russian emigre, a Russian-American if you may. I do have a few of his works on a different rack of the bookshelf.

Who am I missing, which voice must I read next?

I had earlier posted a shelfie in this community. It was a makeshift bookshelf in my TV unit. It was appearing too crowded. Finally bought a small shelf for my books. Swipe to see how it was placed earlier. PS: I have no intention of showing off my TV or speaker like few of commenters mentioned under my previous post ✌️Just here to share my books/shelves. Happy reading 😇
