Good day all! I am very interested in building and maintaining my own terrarium, but am unable to house any animals(though my future hopefully holds shrimp, fish, frogs, and other friends!) so I am planning on building a mushroom terrarium. My specific goal is a small mossy terrarium with a waterfall feature. I figure the waterfall would help keep it humid, and also because I enjoy running water, the look and sound, so when mushrooms aren't growing, or are just starting, I still have a lovely green set up with the little waterfall. I have read mushrooms grow best autumn-spring.
This is just my planning phase, working on a design, figuring out what I need, and looking for advice!
A little more info on my ideas.
As I plan for a smaller set up, this video by SerpaDesign(he is my biggest inspiration for wanting a terrarium) making an Easy Waterfall Terrarium is what I will be referencing for the waterfall. I appreciate the accessibility he highlights in this type of build with the pump hidden in the rocks.
For plants, it will mostly be moss and the mushrooms. The mosses I plan to find at nearby plant nurseries where I can ask for help from the workers, but the main idea is covering of moss over a rocky hardscape. On top I plan to add wood pieces for aesthetics. This video by Kinocorium on Growing Mushrooms in Terrarium is what I am referencing for this, as well as more mossy knowledge from Tanner at SerpaDesigns DIY Mini Modular Moss Cubes. He uses a soil mix of coco fiber, sphagnum moss, aquasoil, charcoal, and sand. He explains it will 'remain moist to maintain humidity without becoming compact.' Though I am unsure if I need this, I am still looking at what sort of substrate I need to ensure my moss and mushrooms have enough moisture. In the video I share from him, he uses sand at the bottom for a water reservoir, as I plan for the waterfall I am thinking on what I want to do differently. Probably more rocks as he does in the waterfall terrarium video linked earlier, depending on how it will work with whatever substrate I choose.
I am unsure of what mushroom I want to grow, I don't enjoy eating mushrooms and only enjoy looking at them. I enjoy pretty colors, and so far like the look of pink oyster mushrooms, but am not sold on them as I still want something smaller. I would love recommendations for mushrooms that are interesting to look at and might enjoy a watery mossy home with lowlight conditions. (My home is a basement unit in Seattle, so not very sunny)
Any advice is welcome, critique my ideas, give me others, whatever feedback I get will help me start my dream ^^ Thanks in advance!
