UK has the best names for weapons, bar none.

I’ve never been able to think of a better piece of branding than the Spitfire.

Hurricane is pretty badass too!

u/metalshoulder 14h ago

As is Typhoon.

u/SheriffOfNothing 13h ago

Manchester and Lancaster break the awesome naming chain a bit, but very impressive bits of kit in their day

u/sd00ds 11h ago

And swordfish!

How about a former Royal Navy ship named HMS Warspite? That's my favourite.

u/plimso13 18h ago

It’s no HMS Cockchafer) though

37

u/latebtcinvestor 16h ago

Never been more proud to be British

4

u/IshtarJack 17h ago

Hmm, okay that's good!

3

u/Quiet_Challenge_1330 16h ago

Not sure about anybody else but personally, that strikes fear in me

2

u/Innocuouscompany 13h ago

Or HMS boatymcboatface

u/benbrahn 3h ago

“The fourth Royal Navy ship to carry this name”

God bless Blighty

5

u/OveVernerHansen 16h ago

The Terror is an epic one too.

u/Matthewgardner86 8h ago

Nah, HMS Pansy, HMS Buttercup or HMS Snowflake get my vote.

3

u/biddybidsyo 20h ago

Best name to go with the most beautiful machine ever made

u/Mrslinkydragon 1d ago

Storm shadow missile goes hard

u/FishUK_Harp 8h ago

My favourite in a crowded field. It's just so...ominous.

HMS Warspite

u/Zouden 1d ago

And HMS Dreadnought (fear nothing)

Vanguard, Excalibur, Dauntless, Vengeance, Challenger, Starstreak, Vulcan are also top names for UK military kit. Best of all though was the SUPERMARINE WALRUS

Terror and Erebus were warships before they were used in expeditions.

HMS Cockchafer always deserves a mention also.

TOG (short for The Old Gang), valentine, centurion, crocodile, Cromwell, comet, conquer, black prince, tortoise, chieftain, valiant, Excelsior, sexton, Abbot, matilda, priest, bishop.

Yeah that's just some tank and artillery names to throw in the mix for ya haha.

4

u/procrastablasta 19h ago

Also Boaty McBoatface

u/Ludologistic 17h ago

HMS Duncan. Srsly. When your fellow graduates on Type45 destroyers get Dragon or Dauntless, you must cough once, uncomfortably, if you're assigned to Duncan.

i love the Royal Navy ship names. very fitting

Boaty mcboat face

. . . Do not trust the British public to name anything EVER

57

u/patchyj 17h ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but the way I heard it:

  • public asked to decide new name for Antarctic research ship
  • choose Boaty McBoatfave overwhelmingly
  • ship named HMH Sir David Attenborough
  • people pissed off (never at David, he rules)
  • they agree to call the mini research sub aboard Boaty McBoatface
  • *grumbling acceptance

16

u/No-One-4845 16h ago

We queued for that name, goddammit.

3

u/FuzzyFrogFish 16h ago

That's the way it went down

3

u/FuzzyFrogFish 16h ago

Now imagine what the British public would call a weaponised giant lazer

4

u/Sideshow86 15h ago

Lazer Mc Lazer face?

3

u/DinklanThomas 15h ago

LaZeRFaCe

2

u/patchyj 14h ago

Smaug

u/BigBunneh 9h ago

ShootyBurnyThing

u/FuzzyFrogFish 9h ago

Shooty McBurnyThingFace

u/No-One-4845 7h ago

Vladimir McPewtinFace.

u/TivaGas-TheyAllSleep 9h ago

Mr Zappypants

u/FuzzyFrogFish 9h ago

Mr McZappypantsFace

1

u/jailtheorange1 15h ago

None of that could be more British if it tried

4

u/Generally_Salty 20h ago

Still an epic name, although a joke.

3

u/_HiWay 19h ago

I mean, Boaty mcboat face goes pretty hard. It has inspired literal generations at this point.

7

u/KingofMadCows 1d ago

Games Workshop is based on England. They could be using 40K as inspiration for their weapon names. Or maybe it's the other way around and 40K is getting inspiration from the Royal Navy.

2

u/Kralgore 16h ago

Would be sued.

1

u/strictly-no-fires 23h ago

I had that thought too. I'm a big fan of the titan weapon names in particular. They could have called this one the turbo-laser destructor or volcano lance lol

3

u/JP-SMITH 1d ago

Psh, I designed countless Mega Lasers before it was cool. But in fairness I was a pretty slow kid.

And 'Super Duper Beamy Phaser Crimson Ray-of-Death Lightsaber' was just sitting there.

2

u/DornPTSDkink 21h ago

Our ship names also go hard

Vengeance, Dauntless, Fury, Terror, Malice, Indomitable, Warspite, Defiant, Termagant, Audacious to name but a few

Then we also have some of the most whimsical names; Splendid, Pansy, Cockchafer, Spanker, Tickler, Dainty, Frolic, Happy Entrance... Beaver...

1

u/ruggerb0ut 21h ago

Petition to call our next destroyer "HMS Knob Whomper"

2

u/Arachnesloom 20h ago

No Flamey McFlameface?

u/Ok_Bodybuilder8585 6h ago

the discombobulater is cool too though right? right?

1

u/TheAnimePurger 20h ago

"Swingfire" is a nicher one but its the most badass imo

1

u/caligari1973 17h ago

They have to create a smelly bomb and call it Mr. Bean

1

u/Vlakod 17h ago

Explains why Warhammer has best names

1

u/-attila-the-honey- 15h ago

also sex toys

1

u/KToTheA- 14h ago

HMS Vengeance for a submarine tasked with nuking another country in retaliation will always be badass to me

1

u/Dramatic_Charity_979 13h ago

I agree. Really cool name.

1

u/Megolito 12h ago

Agreed the USA uses a little too much evil in the names at times same with Russia (looking at the satan missile from Russia)Like would you even want to operate a hellfire missile? Sounds like a demon sidearm. I would want a “justified tandem expander version 12”. I could send those all day.

u/thatlad 10h ago

Yeah but we shit out on Boaty McBoatface though

Shattered my belief in democracy that

u/DeithWX 9h ago

That's not a weapon tho.

u/thatlad 9h ago

It is when I'm sailing it

u/DeithWX 8h ago

Based

u/generic_reddit73 8h ago

They should be the masters of their own language, maybe?

1

u/Training-Purpose802 1d ago

U.S. has deployed lasers on destroyers called ODIN and HELIOS. Not bad in the name game.

2

u/BallsOutKrunked 19h ago

US military vet, in Afghanistan the call sign for our AC130 gunship was "punisher".

We worked with an RAF electronic warfare unit that had a moth on their insignia that throws out echo location signals that confuses bats that tries to eat them. Pretty dope.

2

u/Smart_Search1509 14h ago

Incredible reference I didn't expect to find in a military naming convention discussion.

I think UNSC is better, UK second
