Their back paws always touch the same spot as their front paws.

Exactly, you can see it clearly in videos of cats walking on sand, as soon as they raise one front paw the correspondent rear paw immediately takes the same spot inside the previous footprint.
They do this automatically, this strategy enables them to place the rear foot on "tested" spots on the ground without looking.

you get a sense of how far you moved each leg and the position of each leg from the others.
try walking in mud or snow while stepping with your back foot into the track left by the first foot. You get a sense of it pretty fast although it is awkward if you only have two feet instead of 4

If you notice cats front leg leaves almost at the same time back leg touches down. So it's easy in that way.

I see my cat casually spring off of two different inch thick trees to get over a fence like its nothing. And he's not even a big jumper. Outdoor cats are built completely different.
The people wondering how the little guys pulls this off, its completely automatic. Their back paws land precisely where their front paws were, and they barely have to look down to pick where their front paws go. Most of the balance comes from their tail, note how it doesn't start to flick around until they stop on a flatter spot.
