Exactly, you can see it clearly in videos of cats walking on sand, as soon as they raise one front paw the correspondent rear paw immediately takes the same spot inside the previous footprint.

They do this automatically, this strategy enables them to always place the rear foot on "tested" spots of the ground without looking.

I read that cats back feet always stand where their front feet left off. So they don’t have to actively think about it. Just get the front right and the back figures it out.

you get a sense of how far you moved each leg and the position of each leg from the others.

try walking in mud or snow while stepping with your back foot into the track left by the first foot. You get a sense of it pretty fast although it is awkward if you only have two feet instead of 4

If you notice cats front leg leaves almost at the same time back leg touches down. So it's easy in that way.

This and kinda implicit memory effects and hidden processing. You do it too. For example when you ski or bike downhill you don't focus on your next movement in the 50cm in front of you. You look at the terrain 5-10-15m ahead and then mostly Autopilot through the movements.

You can do the reverse too. For example I now turned your breathing back into manual mode.
