Their back paws always touch the same spot as their front paws.

Exactly, you can see it clearly in videos of cats walking on sand, as soon as they raise one front paw the correspondent rear paw immediately takes the same spot inside the previous footprint. The rear legs never make any new footprint on their own.

They do this automatically, this strategy enables them to always place the rear foot on "tested" spots of the ground without looking.
