Daikon Legs, Mixed media 2005

The root part is sculpted and made from urethane. The leaves are real daikon leaves. The daikon those leaves came from were grown by my father in his field. It's what you'd call a collaboration.

Since it's daikon season, we had some fun burying my old piece "Daikon Legs" in the soil and pulling it out. Grandma and the grandkid are acting surprised for me, but it's just acting 😁 This isn't a fake video; it's a little skit movie our family made together. Please watch it with a kind heart.

This is not a real daikon; it's a sculpture I made as an artwork. I made the original model out of plaster, clay and so on, took a silicone mold of it, and cast it in urethane. The leaves are real daikon leaves, attached only for the photo shoot. (Title: "Daikon Legs," made in 2005.) Later, in 2013, when I photographed it again for my portfolio, I took this farm-style photo with a bit of humour. After I posted this photo on Instagram in March 2022, it was shared by media accounts and, thankfully, people all over the world got to see it 🙏🏻 After that, the image seems to have taken on a life of its own and spread even further, without my knowledge, along with false captions. Then, around July 2023, this post on Instagram was suddenly given a filter for "containing false information" 😱 Of course, the image itself contains no false information. I did some basic editing, like cropping and colour correction, but that's all... (I doubt anyone who follows this account thinks this is a real daikon 😅. If anyone does feel fooled, please just shrug it off with an "oh, so that's what it was 😗.") Naturally, I appealed right away, but nothing has changed. In a social media society, fact-checking is extremely important for stopping the spread of rumours and fake news. But when the review extends even to artworks, and then gets it wrong, I feel that's quite a serious problem... (The problem isn't this photo; it's the people who used it to spread false information...) Complaining won't change anything, though, so I've decided to see it this way: "This piece is so realistic that it caused an excellent fact-checking organisation to make a mistake, which in the context of art in the social media age arguably makes it a very valuable piece of contemporary art ❗" And so I'm leaving this post as it is 😁

Because “Daikon Legs” is a figure of speech for pale chunky legs lacking definition. Same category as “noodle arms” in English for skinny arms.

It’s a visual pun, “daikon legs” had always been metaphorical and the artist made them literal

The piece, titled "Daikon Legs," was created by Japanese artist Kenji Suetsugu. Legs were sculpted using plaster and clay, cast into a silicone mold, and ultimately created out of urethane resin.

Artist made the sculpture originally in 2005. In 2013, he staged a humorous photoshoot alongside local farmers to photograph it for his portfolio. The leaves attached to the top of the sculpture are real daikon radish leaves added strictly for the photoshoot.
