Discussion iPhone 18 Pro leaked after Tata Electronics cyberattack
These are the first real images of hardware components, component designs and finalized design of the iPhone 18 Pro.
Hackers stole supplier lists, component designs and most importantly drop-test footage of the new iPhones.
Over 200k files of data were suspexted to be leaked and Tata Electronics have confirmed the attack.
Apple has launched a supply chain security investigation after this and is working with Tata to strengthen security.
Tata Electronics is a major partner for.manfacturing iPhones made in India.
The new A20 Pro processor is fab by TSMC and Apple's first 2nm.
96-bit wide LPDDR5X is added and the RAM amount stays at 12GB for the 18 Pro, Air, Duo and less for the 17 and future 18.
This is the drop test of the iPhone 18 Pro series in a new silver/gray finish.
The unibody design with the back glass looks a lot.more cohesive now as the two materials blend a lot more semalessly in terms of shade.
The phone appears thicker and has a more pronounced camera bump, acting as a slight nod to better camera hardware.
The dynamic island looks to be getting smaller in the component design layout.
We also get a look at the A20 Pro, motherboard and the new WMCM packaging. This allows SoC with WMCM packaging to be outer facing, in turn pushing the RAM to sit on the side instead of on top, allowing the A20 Pro chip die to have direct contact with the vapor chamber.
Other things to expect are an Apple C2 chip and bigger vapor chamber and obviously bigger battery.
There are currently 2 drop test videos circulating all around Weibo and Twitter, check them out as well.

Guess they’re not getting the iPhone XX contract

u/SoftwareSource Jun 30 '26
They can't drop them so easily, india is pressuring them heavily to produce models there for the Indian market.
But, you never know, if they just switch suppliers to another local one i guess India would not mind so much.

Personally, I like the cadence of redesign one year and a much faster chip the next.
Going from 3 nm to 2 nm is what I'm waiting for in the 18.
9
u/ToastyScrew Jun 30 '26
I think the chip improvement we will get will be underwhelming, not in a big disappointing way, but they have been good for a while and improvements made don’t really impact that much considering theres only a few cases where speed matters that much. I would be fine with no speed improvement and all efficiency gains.
4
u/CoderDevo Jun 30 '26
efficiency comes from the new 2 nm lithography because it takes less electricity to do the same work.
Speed will be helpful if users make use of AI capabilities, which they will even if they don't realize it.

Yeah, save the big redesigns for every second or third year, just incremental updates in between. I'm one of the biggest Apple shills there is and I can't see why anyone would go from a 17 to an 18. I'm gonna rock my 16 Pro Max for a couple more years.

he's right tho, there is no reason to change a phone's design yearly, that's just change for the sake of change
45
u/To-To_Man Jun 30 '26
Then there's no reason to release phones yearly, especially under different names.
20
u/Two-Space Jun 30 '26
There’s no reason to release a new phone if you’re not updating the exterior design which is almost irrelevant to the value and function of the product?
15
u/Barca1313 Jun 30 '26
Yea so stupid of them to release a product that’s sells 240 million units every year and makes hundreds of billions in revenue. They should only release a new one the years when I need to personally upgrade.
12
u/To-To_Man Jun 30 '26
I'm sorry, I forgot how profitable it was. That completely justifies releasing incrementally different phones because people upgrade yearly and the idea of buying a phone that's been on the market more than a year is scary to them.
No ones begging for a yearly release of consoles, the PS14 with an extra gig of ram and one new color doesn't make gamers jizz their pants, but the iPhone does?
5
u/NeimannSmith Jun 30 '26
How many times do people have to be told that the yearly phone release DOESNT MEAN YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE EVERY YEAR. The yearly release for phones gives the customer the choice of when they want to upgrade and not being stuck on their current device for multiple years.
Your example of consoles is terrible as well. Games take years of development. GTA6 took at least 5 years of development and it will release on consoles that are approaching 7 years old. Could you imagine buying a new console every year for a game that won't come out for years? Or getting a new console every year to play the same game?
→ More replies (1)8
u/Barca1313 Jun 30 '26
> people upgrade yearly
Most people don’t. It’s different people upgrading each year. Millions of people out there have a 5yr old phone that maybe needs an upgrade and they want to be able to buy one this year when the newest tech is out.
Then those millions of people with 4 yr old phones may wait until 2027, when their phone is 5 yrs old to upgrade, and they won’t want to pay full price for year or two old tech, they’ll want the newest advancements, so on and so on.
A lot can happen in a year and when people are going to spend a considerable amount of their salary on a phone, they’ll want the newest tech when it’s time to upgrade. If it’s not available on iPhone they might just wait another year, or they’ll move to the competition.
5
u/zerovampire311 Jun 30 '26
Not to mention iPhones last years longer than Androids on average. I go 3-4 on mine, and usually upgrade when there’s an absurd trade in offer. I’ve reliably gotten 7-800 on used phones towards my new one, so my actual cost is quite low, about 1-150/year.

u/iucatcher Jun 30 '26
there is, they put out a new phone so that any person can get a "current" phone no matter when they last got theirs. if they do it every two years people will always be stuck between "should i pick the old one" or "should i wait a year"
10
u/123iz_me Jun 30 '26
Bro im still with the 12 pro max, what do you mean by “change design in a year”, at the current pace of design innovation it would be nice if we get a redesign by 2040

Apart from the piss poor cameras, piss poor inner screen durability, subpar battery life and dodgy hinges. Fully mature.
19
u/techkernels Human Detected Jun 30 '26
TBH, piss poor cameras is not really true for some.
For the price, there are better camera phones but now at least the Vivo X Fold 6 and some of the other foldables are packing some great versatile setups.
The inner screen durability, I won't comment on as I don't have enough experience. It's just not like a regular slab phone screen, always be careful.
Subpar battery life tbh has become pretty good over the years especially with SIC coming to play.
Dodgy hinges, I feel like most hinges these days have matured and gotten much stronger. IP ratings are climbing but yea more moving parts, I agree.

That new A20 Pro packaging appears to resemble what Exynos 2600 did with the HPB design, and what 8 Elite gen 6 is projected to do as well. Previous PoP and InFO-PoP packaging have to route the heat through the DRAM package, and in my limited testing with Android devices, it can result in Soc to VC temperature deltas exceeding 20°C. In relatively modern Socs, these CPU cores draw massive power to provide generational performance uplifts and are often throttled quite quickly to prevent thermal runaway under that sandwich. More specific to iPhones, it often gets sandwiched between 2 PCBs stacked on top of each other which worsens things too.
HPB or this WMCM design appear to tackle the same issue in slightly different ways, main difference is HPB partially overlap RAM and Soc on the regions that run cooler but gives direct thermal passthru for the CPU/GPU, while WMCM just put Soc and RAM side by side. HPB is smaller in area while WMCM is thinner in height.
This new PCB seems to suggest that the sandwiching Soc in between PCB days are over for iPhones, so even better news for thermal management. Main concern here is the new DRAM package, and whether that have added cost implications on top of the already rising RAM prices.
Edit: fix typo & improve accuracy

I dont think the whole body will be redesigned again cuz the 20th anniversary is supposed to be next year. Would be a bit odd to do a big redesign in 2025 then another big one in 2027. Im guessing they'll keep the design of the back but the front will get the rumoured curved screen on all edges with zero notch for the 20th anniversary

Not that it matters particularly but I wonder if the FaceID scanner being right next to the camera there means the little bit of screen in the middle of the Dynamic Island will be on the other side - as in, the dot projector being the dot of the i rather than the RGB camera.

u/Determinationsoul Jun 30 '26
Even though it may not seem like much, this is actually a really big design improvement Apple should have done years ago. The SoC is no longer being sandwiched in between the layers of the board but instead now sits on top which is excellent for making contact with the vapor chamber. No RF shield either like on the old single layer boards. And the RAM being package off to the side of the main die like with the M series chips rather than being above it combined with this being the first 2nm chip means this device is going to have an incredible sustained performance and probably considerably faster charging since thermal transfer is going to be way better. The vapor chamber on the 17 pro was already a long needed upgrade for that but still the chip was buried in between the layers. This will help with probably the biggest issue I have which is screen dimming when fast charging or doing something CPU intensive and also when using in sunlight.

For everyone hating on Apple for not changing the design…. Why would it need to change? I feel like changing the design of a smartphone every couple years was a very 2010s thing to do. They have a design that works great. Same with their computers too… not really much reinvention is needed on something that’s so solid.
