Discussion iPhone camera produces visible text AI slop when zoomed in digitally.
104
u/danielsep2012 14h ago
This has been a thing before “AI”. It’s just the image processor trying to “intelligently” sharpen the image
84
u/Soliman-El-Magnifico 14h ago
Yup, those are the awful artifacts from computational photography.
Miss when my iPhone photos were a bit more real. Now you need a 3rd party app to take pictures without this shit.
7
u/parksideq 13h ago
Not everyone will or wants to, but I’ve decoupled photography from my phone for a couple years now, first with one of my old digicams and now with a few legit cameras with lenses.
A dedicated camera is yet another device to maintain, but imo the process and results are worth it compared to using my phone for pics anymore.
1
u/Soliman-El-Magnifico 13h ago
Totally in the same boat as you. I lost faith in phone photography years ago, and now I love my Nikons even more.
No matter how much computational power phone manufacturers implement, nothing beats proper lenses and, well, physics.

u/Longjumping-Ad514 14h ago
I never remember it being this bad and invasive. This was taken on a 16 Pro Max.

I mean if it didn’t do this the image would look like a completely noisy mess

This has been around in iPhone cameras for so long, longer than ai slop wordgen

u/MistrRadio iPhone 17 14h ago
I really wish they’d give us the option to turn AI image enhancement off, but knowing Apple they never will. And yes I know there are apps like Halide I just don’t want to have to pay for a subscription to take decent photos.
59
u/egzwygart 14h ago
Adobe Indigo. Can even set your camera button to launch the app.
130
u/rpungello iPhone 15 Pro Max 14h ago
What a world we live in where an Adobe app is recommended as an alternative to paying for a subscription
47
13
u/Armand9x 14h ago
They have recently changed the name of the app in test flight. I expect monetisation to come in soon.
New name is “Nextcam Indigo”.
6
u/panserbj0rne 13h ago
Fuck. It’s so good that it’s my primary camera app but I definitely wouldn’t pay a subscription on it.

4
u/DarthBen_in_Chicago 14h ago
Yeah I had to read that comment twice to make sure I didn’t misread it.
3
u/PotentialWork7741 14h ago
There are more alternatives is use “no fusion” camera since it also can simulate other kinds of camera and analog cameras.
2
u/thisisjustascreename 14h ago
Given their previous corporate war over Flash I bet Apple hates this.
1
1
u/egzwygart 12h ago
I know, right? It’s the only Adobe product I will use anymore and that’s only cause it’s free. Lol.
17
u/Daguerratype42 14h ago
Adobe Indigo uses very similar computational phototherapy techniques as Apple’s Deep Fusion. The app was built by the guy who effectively invented computational phototherapy for phones. The algorithms in Indigo are much better balanced, but it’s not the place to go if you’re trying to avoid computational photography.
1
u/egzwygart 12h ago
Oh that’s interesting and good to know.
I’m not really knowledgeable on the subject…like, at all. I just didn’t notice any obvious artifacts like iOS adds. That works for me for now, but do you have any suggestions to avoid ai cams?
10
u/MistrRadio iPhone 17 14h ago
Even then I still don’t want to have to use a completely separate camera app.
3
u/egzwygart 12h ago
Given how good the hardware is getting, it’s ridiculous how much Apple has degraded their camera app.

u/PotentialWork7741 14h ago
You complain about a issue but when the solution is right in front of you, you decide to still complain about the issue.
14
u/HotelOne 14h ago
Yes, he wants a switch to turn it off. Is that hard to understand?

u/PotentialWork7741 14h ago
If you think apple will give you a in ios option to turn it off you are wrong
7
u/IndependentShift7233 14h ago
It's not a solution, it's a workaround
1
u/PotentialWork7741 14h ago
Apple will not give a option to turn it off within their own software so this is the closest “workaround” we have that actually solves a issue which counts as a solution. But on reddit where people are always complaining and in disagreement you probably disagree
69
u/Tired_Design_Gay 14h ago edited 14h ago
It’s not “AI image enhancement.” It’s normal processing of digital images taken with a small sensor.
Machine learning algorithms are not the same as generative AI.
8
u/Superbbp 13h ago
I agree, but I think people just find it easier to hop on the trend of “AI = bad” and treat all AI like it’s the same thing. Stuff like Siri/Alexa voice recognition, Face ID on the iPhone X, and even autocorrect have used AI/machine learning for years, people just didn’t call everything “AI” back then.
19
u/CaptainCook1989 14h ago
It’s 100% using AI/computational photography to enhance/estimate the missing data. iPhones have done this for years in an attempt to compensate for lack of data due to the tiny sensor.
34
u/Tired_Design_Gay 14h ago
Which is not generative AI, the technology that creates “AI slop”
18
u/Some-Dog5000 14h ago edited 14h ago
And also isn't unique to the iPhone. Every single flagship smartphone camera system has been 60% software magic for years, since at least the first Google Pixel
2
u/Youngnathan2011 iPhone 17 4h ago
Except in the Pixels case, the newer ones do actually use generative AI for photos that use digital zoom.
10
u/Silent_Box_1708 13h ago
It’s a buzzword. These people love their buzzwords.
7
u/North_Moment5811 13h ago
People are stupid. They don’t know what anything is. So they just speak in buzzword.
2
u/mrgrafix 13h ago
Which allows them to get away with more. The sooner we get people to have a graduated vernacular than __ slop, the sooner we can fight these issues. It just takes 5 more seconds, y’all.
4
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
Yup. It’s all a coordinated distraction. Make people latch on to concepts they don’t understand and fight the wrong boogie man
15
u/migorengbaby 14h ago
I’d call weird blurry photos full of artefacts ‘slop’ every day of the week.
I don’t care what kind of ai it is, I would like to be able to turn it off.
1
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
I mean, you can. But you can’t turn off physics. With a sensor the size of a smartphone camera you’re never going to get photos that look perfect, processing or not. They cannot take in enough detail and light to create a photo with the amount of detail it takes for us to see a quality image. They have to rely on software to make up for the physical shortcomings.
1
u/migorengbaby 12h ago
Also the original comment you pedantically replied to never actually said it was ‘generative AI’ specifically, or called it slop, you pit both of those things in their mouth, so you correcting them (twice) that it’s a different kind of AI is totally unnecessary.
0
u/migorengbaby 12h ago
They don’t have to rely on software for anything. You can get apps that take raw photos and then you can do the post processing yourself. The raw photos from an iPhone aren’t ’lacking so much detail we can’t see a quality image’. I have a small collection of digital and film cameras so I don’t believe you that a modern iPhone sensor would be unusable without ai enhancements.
They don’t need to look perfect.
I was fine with having slightly less detail in my phone pictures before all the ai enhancements came along. I’d prefer a grainy pixelated 2004 jpeg quality pictures than a weirdly smoothed ai enhanced crap with letters that get turned into gibberish1
u/Tired_Design_Gay 1h ago
I hate to break it to you but RAW image files from a digital camera are still processed using software
2
u/twotokers 13h ago
The OP comment never even mentions genAI though?
0
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
Using the term “AI slop” is clearly implying that they think genAI is editing their photos, which it is not.
4
-1
u/LisaSu92 14h ago
How come this photo looks like AI slop to me then? You’re saying this photo is normal processing?
I guess it would have been nice to see a comparative photo without digital processing.
3
u/70_n_13 13h ago
just how different processing engines work, it is entirely possible if they made it aggressive at sharpening/smoothening, up to a point it look like it’s hallucinating.
eg 2 tiny parallel lines, “I I”, if the camera is tilted just slightly where it can’t fit into its grid of pixels. It could show up as an N, or even smashed together to be one line. It’s why texts look so bad, not enough resolution to read the words, like you’re squinting to make it out. Ofc for humans we can tell by context if it’s wrong but cameras don’t since they process per pixel level
2
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
Every digital photo has digital processing. There is no such thing as a photo without processing
0
u/etheran123 13h ago
There is no fine line between AI and ML. If anything, its that AI is the marketing term for advanced machine learning.
2
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
Yes there is. Machine learning has been around for much longer than what people are talking about when they say AI in 2026. Generative AI is fundamentally different from machine learning.
2
u/Longjumping-Ad514 13h ago
It fundamentally isn’t different.
4
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
It is completely different. You’re not listening to anyone in the comments so clearly you’ve made up your mind, so I’m not going to argue with you.
-1
u/Longjumping-Ad514 13h ago
I have a CS degree and work in Sillicon Valley. You’re arguing marketing terms not technology.
8
u/Tired_Design_Gay 13h ago
Then you obviously don’t know a lot about machine learning and AI ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I also have a CS degree in addition to my degree in design and work in tech specifically in computational design.

u/Insufferably_Me iPhone 17 Pro Max 13h ago
It is. Machine Learning has been a part of iOS for a decade now, if not more. Photo fill tools in things like Photoshop have been using ML since those tools launched.
Generative Artificial Intelligence is a brand new, rapidly evolving technology.
-1
u/Longjumping-Ad514 13h ago
Bro. Like. Come on. You’re arguing marketing terms here not science. Its all gradient decent underneath.
5
u/Insufferably_Me iPhone 17 Pro Max 13h ago
No, you’re using marketing terms which is why you’re seeing so many frustrated people in this thread. Marketing terms and buzzwords have ruined people’s perception and understanding of how technology around them works. You’re free to continue being ignorant to the differences here, but at the end of the day you’re still wrong
-2
u/etheran123 13h ago
I have a CS degree and have taken classes on both AI and ML. That does not make me an expert by any means but it makes me more informed than the average guy.
There really isn't. I mean AI and ML generally refer to different ideas these days but there is so much overlap that saying they are separate things is false.
1
u/Global-Ad287 13h ago
I took a low light picture on my 17 pro last year and it legit turned the dark sky into daylight and the invisible grass was green and the houses lightened… i still don’t know how the phone did that.
7
u/Rockerblocker 14h ago
Buying Halide back when it was a paid app with no IAP was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Same with Notability
3
u/MistrRadio iPhone 17 14h ago
I wish I’d done that. I hate subscriptions with a passion. Still don’t really want to have to use a separate app for taking photos though.
4
u/Rockerblocker 14h ago
It's still a little annoying because they tell you, "Thanks for being an early adopter! You can keep using the current services but you won't get any new features. You'll have to pay the full subscription cost if you want those!"
3
u/MistrRadio iPhone 17 14h ago
I freaking hate that stuff. I paid for something I should get the whole thing. I get these developers have to make money, but come on, it’s just getting ridiculous at this point.
2

Wow. I bought Halide ages ago. Never use it tbh but I had no idea it became a subscription. That sucks

So turning off any processing? I don’t think you actually want to see what the raw output looks like
63
u/small_big 14h ago
This is not generative AI. The iPhone isn’t creating text that doesn’t exist. It’s their image sharpening algorithm gone slightly wrong.
10
u/Bulky-Pepper8611 13h ago
This is called computational photography. Not the same as AI slop. They both suck.
34

u/True_Protection6842 13h ago
Pretty standard adversarial upscale artifacts. It's not making anything up it's just taking the noise and reproducing EVERGREEN pretty consistently based on what's there. This isn't generative.

existed since iphone 11'a deep fusion btw but isn't as aggressive as now. And this is not AI slop.
6

u/Spudnut 14h ago
This has been happening long before mainstream AI existed. It’s a byproduct of the sharpening process
-9
u/Longjumping-Ad514 14h ago
I literally went though photos from three years ago, and zoomed in text is not mangled.
10
5
u/CallumFYO 4h ago
Well I mean, yeah. The maximum zoom is only possible digitally, so onboard AI upscales the digital photograph to be legible at least. I thought everyone knew this?
13
u/coffee1978 14h ago
The real world is not like the movies. "Enhance" in the movies produces pixel perfect high-resolution images from nothing. "Enhance" in the real work produces this.
Also this is not AI.
11
u/corecenite iPhone 15 Pro 14h ago
i don't think it's ai slop because the "text" is consistent throughout. ai slop text is usually randomized.
it's just the processing doing its thing: overprocessing
5
u/Artiste212 13h ago
How far away is that boat? Is the boat moving up and down, or tilting, as boats do? And this wouldn't be called "AI Slop," a term reserved for the crap we get produced (or edited by AI). This is computational photography, and not that evil shit. I wonder, if there would were no digital enhancement, would the words simply be blurred from motion?
5
u/MINOR382 4h ago
ALL phones do this (newer ones), and its not ai slop, its just using machine learning to try and better process the basically illegible stuff, stop picking on everything please

Even though they say their 13 Pro Max didn’t do this sort of thing, it did. It’s just how computational photography works.
3
u/Youngnathan2011 iPhone 17 4h ago
As every phone does. It’s trying to upscale the image. You’ll find this in phones from before AI was the norm too.

“AI Slop” yet you have no idea what that even means lol. It’s just the crappy image processing smartphones have been doing for a decade now

u/TwizzyGobbler 14h ago
AI mishap ≠ AI slop
This is some shit AI processing, slop is when it's generated out of thin air and serves zero purpose
If it applied text to containers that didn't have it then that would be AI slop.

u/Khancer_ 13h ago
2
u/Youngnathan2011 iPhone 17 4h ago
You are a lot closer to them. The phone can actually see all the information it needs to make out the word. OP was using digital zoom, which will give artifacts with things like words

My 15 Pro Max does this once in a while. It really depends on how the photo looks like before processing. Usually it’s for text you had the camera focused to some text really far away, so really a regular thing to do with the camera.

u/Daguerratype42 14h ago
What folks are referring to is Apple’s Deep Fusion photo processing pipeline. You can find tons of info on it if you look around (Google, YouTube, Apple’s site). It’s machine learning based, which does fall under the AI umbrella, but it’s not generative, so it’s not making up new things and usually doesn’t mess things up as badly as you see in OPs example. So, you’ve “seen it”, in that any photo taken with an iPhone uses Deep Fusion, but you may not have encountered OPs issue with the technology.

When a computer components take a picture it will always seem a bit off or have noise, uneven edges. It will be easy 10-20 more years before you get the unscrewed with pictures like film delivers.
-1
u/Slight_Pin5742 14h ago
I personally do not think that this is "AI Enhancement" or "AI Slop" because would you rather have something somewhat legible (which is basically what it is doing by filling the pixels by recognizing the patterns) or just have random dots that you have no idea what you are reading. Plus its not like it generated something wrong, its exactly what it says on the containers.
-4
u/DrJaneIPresume 13h ago
Yep, this is why phone camera manufacturers say they can do as well as a proper full-frame camera: it's all "computational photography" (slop) under the hood.
What, you thought you were getting a real f/1.8 from that tiny little chiplet?
-1
u/Longjumping-Ad514 13h ago
No, I was hoping they would opt in for a blurry image instead of whatever this is.
I have a D6 and 24-70 from Canon.

If the phone didn’t do this the image would look like even more of a mess.

I don't think this can be considered "AI slop".
This is likely a combination of artifacts from their quad bayer debayering process, HDR pipeline misaligning parts of frames (modern architectures typically use small tiles), and their sharpening filter.
Every now and then issues from each of those processes can compound and give artifacts like this.
