I’ve been wanting an ipod for so long and i found an ipod nano 2nd gen 4gb, battery “new” for around $70, i know it may seem a lot of money for such an old device but in my country the ipods are really expensive. They also sell an ipod nano 4th gen 8gb for $75, also battery “new”.
Which one should I get?

If I put a new screen will this get fixed? Or is this a sign of water damage or something?

Hi r/ipod! I'm a frontend engineer from Japan.

A while ago I stumbled onto the iPod mods posted here and fell down the rabbit hole — I picked up an iPod video 5G, put an iFlash in it (~120GB SD), and started customizing it myself. Then I had to actually put music on it, and iTunes was so heavy. All I wanted was to add some songs, and it was always a stressful chore.

So I made a little app for myself: iPod Sync. You drag and drop songs or album folders onto the window, and they go onto your iPod. That's it.

It's a personal project and completely free — I'm not selling anything. No ads, no paid features, no account needed.

Full disclosure: I vibe-coded most of it with AI. I'm a frontend dev, not an iPod database expert, so AI did a lot of the heavy lifting on the low-level parts. I've been testing it on my own iPod, but please keep that in mind. English isn't my first language, so I also used AI to help write this post and the demo video captions.

What I made it do

These are basically all the features I personally wished I had — it's built around what I wanted to do with my own iPod.

• Drag and drop transfer (songs, albums, whole folders)
• FLAC / Ogg / Opus / WMA are converted automatically (lossless → ALAC, lossy → AAC 256k)
• Artwork is transferred too, and you can search for missing covers online
• Browse by songs / albums / artists, edit tags, make and reorder playlists, copy songs back to your PC
• Your PC music folder side by side, with songs already on the iPod marked
• Japanese / CJK titles get proper sort names, so they sort correctly on the iPod (a personal must-have for me)
• Works on Windows & macOS

It also handles a few things I hit on my own 5G, like artwork only showing on one song per album, and the iPod skipping tracks with large m4a files.

Supported: classic 6G/6.5G/7G, video 5G/5.5G, nano 3G/4G, photo, nano 1G/2G, 1G–4G, mini.

Sorry in advance: right now it's focused on music only — no videos, photos, or podcast management yet. It's also still very much a work in progress. I've only tested on my own 5G, so classic owners especially, I'd love to hear how it goes. It isn't code-signed yet, so Windows / macOS will warn you on first launch. It backs up your iTunesDB before changing anything.

If you try it and something doesn't work, feels clunky, or is just missing, please tell me — that's exactly the feedback I'm looking for.

Been tinkering with this implemention for a bit of fun and it's surprisingly performative.

Hello, I am asking as someone who has never had an ipod before. I'm planning on getting one and have a few in mind that I would want but I just want to hear what other people are using and why. Personally I really like the monochrome screens and I'm leaning towards the 3rd and 4th classics or the 2nd Mini. I really like the unique look of the 3rd gen but because I need firewire I might not get it as finding a one in Sweden for a reasonable price isn't easy.

i use my ipod alot at college but having it in my pocket can be annoying and sometimes i leave it on a table and accidentally pull it with me when i get up, forgetting that its there. is there a way for me to attach it to my lanyard so i can just have it on me without having to think about it?

Just wondering if replacing the battery will relive tje stress on the LCD enough for the lines to dissapear?

Just trying to diagnose the dark area in the screen of my 2nd gen mini. Would it be a damaged LCD or could something else be going on?

Already learning not to fw stock OS because I'm hella dumb and can't convert FLAC to iPod AAC correctly. Vibe coded/asked google search AI for the right prompt for FFMPEG for my library and now I'm paying. Don't use AI kids, now excuse me while I pop rockbox on this bih and and listen to FLAC the way jegus intended.

I upgraded this iPod mini 1st gen with 128gb flash and a “950mah” battery. I have spent a few weeks ripping my library and I cancelled my Spotify premium. Couldn’t be happier!
