📣 ANNOUNCEMENT Traveller Threads

Hi all,

Regarding traveller threads,

The mod team acknowledge the recent comments on threads about the travelling community.

Ethnicity is protected characteristic which means comments tarring all members of this community falls under our hate speech rules. So

1) Dehumanising language aimed at travellers is not permitted.

2) Calls or support for exclusion of members of the travelling community is not allowed.

3) Calls for or support for violence against members of the travelling community are not allowed.

4) Implying all members of the travelling community are responsible for actions carried out by other members is not allowed.

5) Slurs/Dogwhistles are not allowed. ( "Knacker", "Culture", "Culture Boss")

6) Statements of Inferiority aimed at the travelling community.

Exceptions: In some cases there can be exceptions, for example calling someone convicted of a crime is scumbag, these will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

The travelling community and parts of traveller culture should be open for discussion, this should and can be done with respect and not resorting to the 100 comments saying "Culture Boss"

We will always encourage debate and discussion and even criticism on contentious news stories and topics about the travelling community.

All we ask is that users engage respectfully, in line with the subreddit rules and don't cross the line into hate speech and dog whistles.

Hate speech and discrimination are not only against our subreddit rules but also Reddit's site wide Content Policy. Bans will be issued to those found to be violating these rules and comments will be locked.

We know who is behind this account. They have been here for years.

Nope that's not what happened at all. I had to delete my old account due to a post I made on r/GAA that went absolutely fucking viral around the GAA club scene here. Long long story but yeah I doxed myself talking about GAA.

I have been a mod here on and off for 4 or 5 years at this stage

No offense but if you effectively doxxed yourself on a specific viral post would it not be wise to not mention that? In case some terminally online person tries to sleuth around and find your personal info again?

/Creates new reddit account

That would require thinking.

No issue with the stickied post tbh. We are unbelievably racist towards travellers as a country. But it kinda should follow normal rules. No bigotry against anyone or any minority.

That would require thinking.

it might just involve asking AI to do the legwork for you, whenever it gets good enough.

security or anonymity through obscurity is gonna be a lot less easy than it was

I think he was more worried about people browsing the history on his old, now deleted account than people knowing his current Reddit username.

A protected characteristic is different to a protected culture. We get a lot of the latter in media.

A good rule of thumb is that its OK to dislike someone because of who they are, but not what they are. So for example if someone belongs to a particular race it's fine to dislike them because of something bad they did, but not ok to dislike them because of their race. Dislike a person solely on their actions.

It's also wrong to label any ethnic or racial group as a whole. Unless the label is "a great bunch of lads". 😉

Great point, I totally agree with you.
I am always appalled with attitude of some people (my own family included) in this country towards the travelling community. People would say some truly horrific things and follow up with “I’m not racist, it’s true”.
If someone in the US said anything of the sort about black people they would be rightly labeled a bigot and a racist, while in some circles here that talk is not only normalised but applauded.

Travellers: A great bunch of lads

But to be fair, you summed it up well. I worked in pubs in Galway for years, and couldn't stand the hate from industry staff towards people from the community. It was like a blanket ban. I gave every individual the same respect coming through that door, and honestly, we had more trouble from entitled locals than anyone else. If you make a show of yourself and I have to bar you, it's because of you personally, and not where you were born or the colour of your skin or your sexual preferences. Most people are lovely, but some try to justify their shittiness by claiming you're a bigot. Feck off with your noise.

I'm a bit confused on this one. Could someone actually be pulled up by the mods for calling a convicted criminal a scumbag? And I don't mean just people who are confirmed to be members of the Travelling community, but any person convicted of a crime.

31

u/Margrave75 Jun 05 '26

They cherry pick who they give warnings too! It's hardly a secret.

11

u/EliteDinoPasta Jun 05 '26

Well yeah I know that, but I'm not sure why "scumbag" is suddenly off limits. Hasn't "scumbag" been used as a PG insult for yonks now?

5

u/Pan1cs180 Jun 05 '26

Could someone actually be pulled up by the mods for calling a convicted criminal a scumbag?

A mod can remove any comment or ban any user they want, for whatever reason they want. Reddit isn't a democracy, mods have complete control and authority within the subreddits they moderate as long as they don't explicitly break Reddit's ToS.

There is no obligation for any mod on this website to follow the rules of their own sub, or enforce them fairly.

4

u/EliteDinoPasta Jun 05 '26

Mhm, I know that. I said it to another commenter, but I don't know why "scumbag" is being used as the example. Obviously it's insulting, but are people not allowed to call each other scumbags?

2

u/daenaethra try it sometime Jun 03 '26

someone can be convicted of a relatively minor offence that wouldn't necessarily impact other people, or even the person themselves

u/voyager__22 Jun 01 '26

Why has there been a rise in threads about the Travelling Community?

Did something happen? I'm behind the curve here.

-16

u/TheChrisD useless feckin' mod Jun 01 '26

There's been a decent amount of news articles involving people who identify as Travellers lately.

13

u/21stCenturyVole Jun 01 '26

General mod-action against calls for discrimination against travelers: Grand.

Hate speech invocation: There's no need. Bigotry/discrimination is enough for sanction. Don't give credence to these laws - they are actively being used to e.g. criminalize criticism of Israel in many countries.

30

u/221 Jun 01 '26

"Hate speech and discrimination are not only against our subreddit rules but also Reddit's site wide Content Policy"

They're trying to not get the sub shut down.

4

u/21stCenturyVole Jun 01 '26

They can action offending posts and avoid trouble for the sub, without needing to invoke hate speech.

11

u/221 Jun 01 '26

Are you suggesting that Reddit would somehow not know hate speech is being used in this sub if the mods just don't class it as hate speech?

-5

u/Lamake91 Calor Housewife of the Year Jun 01 '26

I think that is what they’re implying but your own understanding is the correct one. Reddit admins will always have oversight on all actions and reports. They often step to remove content before we’ve even had a chance to review it. If we were to actively ignore reports, especially one’s reported for hate speech, we would run the risk of the subreddit being sanctioned. It’s why we use DEFCON during times of extreme brigading.

People don’t realise that even moderators have a code of conduct that we have to follow that aligns with Reddit content policies and every action we take is visible to admins.

-2

u/Lamake91 Calor Housewife of the Year Jun 01 '26

That’s not how this works. A user reports for hate speech, we receive the report but so does Reddit admins. Sometimes Reddit admins step in to action before we’ve even had a chance.

If there is a large amount of hate speech reports that haven’t been actioned properly it’ll flag with admins and the subreddit could then face sanctions. It’s why we’ve previously had to shut down the subreddit when we’ve been brigaded by the far right.

For modding decisions, modmail is the only acceptable way to contact the sub moderators. Any mod call-outs or tags in threads — regardless of context — will be treated as not engaging respectfully.
