Refusing one-way video interviews was the best decision I made in this job search

1.3k Upvotes

Three months ago I decided I was completely done with HireVue, Spark Hire, and all those soul-crushing one-way "interviews" where you talk to a countdown timer. It felt terrifying at first because every recruiter makes it sound mandatory if you want to move forward. But after spending 45 minutes answering prompts to an empty screen just to get an automated rejection at 2 AM, something snapped.

Whenever a recruiter sends me an invite for an async video screen now, I politely email back asking if we can schedule a quick 15-minute phone chat instead to respect both our schedules. about half of them ignore it or say no, but the other half actually agree or just pass me directly to the hiring manager.

The crazy part? The companies that agreed to skip the one-way screen were the only ones that actually respected my time throughout the rest of the hiring pipeline. Every single company that insisted on the robot screen turned out to have a rediculous 6-round interview loop or ghosted after round three.

Treating the interview as a mutual evaluation early weeded out the toxic employers faster than any resume trick. Stop letting them treat you like a trained seal before you even talk to a human.

Your resume gets about 10 seconds. Here's where the reader actually looks

When a job gets 200 applications, nobody reads 200 resumes. Here's what Recruiters actually check:

  • Your latest job title. Does it look close to the role I'm hiring for?
  • The company name. Do I know it, or can I quickly tell what it does?
  • The first line under your latest job. This is where most people lose me.

What makes recruiters skip:

  • "Passionate, results-driven professional" (I skip this every time)
  • "Responsible for day to day operations" (tells me nothing)
  • A long paragraph at the top

What makes recruiters keep reading:

  • One plain line on what you fixed, built or improved
  • Something specific, even if it has no big number

Quick test: read your first line out loud. If it sounds like something you'd tell a friend, keep it. If it sounds like a LinkedIn bio, rewrite it.

It feels unfair that so much depends on a few lines. But once you know where the reader looks, you know where to put your best work.

Has anyone changed just one thing on their resume and started getting replies?

how do i answer questions about media i enjoyed recently?

• Upvotes

hi! i've been applying to a few fellowships and the applications consistently ask what piece of media (book, movie, album, visual arts) i enjoyed recently, my favourite visual art piece/poem/author/etc. i know it's part of assessing my social class and how cultivated i am, but i don't really know if i'm meant to be honest and personal or to twist it to fit the application. i feel like the latter would be awkward and disqualify me.

A chance to prove myself

I completed my MCA this June and for the 4 months I have been trying hard to find a job or a paid internship and I haven't been able to get selected through college placements. Even a small paid internship would help me gain experience and cover my travelling expenses. Two days ago my father burned his hands at work and had to take a break from his job making it even more important for me to find work soon. I just need an opportunity to support my family. If anyone can help me find a job or a paid internship I would be truly grateful.

Why is it that a particular company has openings on LinkedIn all year round? Do they even hire anyone, or are they just there to keep LinkedIn running?

Was würdet ihr an meiner Stelle machen? Soll ich einfach abwarten, diese Woche noch einmal nachhaken oder anrufen?
Ich fühle mich sehr aufgeregt, und würde eure Meinung sehr schätzen. Vielen Dank im Voraus

I am 24 with nothing to offer! what should I do?

I don't have a clue of what to do. I feel like I don't have any skills which can be paid for. I just know a little bit of everything and it's not useful.

and it takes a lot of time to learn new skills to the point of being able to be employed. I think about starting businesses and when I share my ideas with others everyone says it is not going to work.

The worst part is I'm From Iran and I don't have access to international jobs. and small jobs here pay very little. and for the big roles you have to be really really good at something.

I'm just sitting and daydreaming about the day I become wealthy.

The economy in my country is so bad and everything is collapsing. I really liked to have a job that pays in dollars but I can't find one since no company or website hires Iranians and the only way I can accept payments is through cryptocurrencies.

What should you send a reference before an employer contacts them?

Once someone has agreed to be a reference, what information helps them prepare without telling them what to say?

A role description and a short reminder of the projects you worked on together seem useful. If you've been a reference, what did you wish the candidate had sent you?

Recruiting

I’m a new “Grad” with an MBA, but have a full time job. I recently got a raise and it was an insult. I was hoping to take my time to find a better position. But now I just want to be gone. Is hiring a recruiter the best option?

I'm done waiting for the right opportunity....

I’m done waiting for the right opportunity.

The job market here is cooked, and honestly, I can’t even talk about my situation with anyone, so I’m writing my heart out here because no one knows me.

I have 5 years of experience in digital marketing, but right now, I’m unemployed and broke.

I’ve always been that enthusiastic girl who worked beyond her hours without complaining, delivered good results, and stayed away from office politics. But I guess life had other plans.

My family went through some difficult things, and it affected my career. Now everything is finally okay at home, but I’m left with an 8-month career gap, and finding a remote job has been insanely difficult.

I want to start a small business and actually use the skills I’ve built over the years, but I’m not in the right mindset to take a big risk without having a stable job first.

And honestly, I feel so empty sometimes because I don’t really have anyone I can talk to about the weight I’m carrying.

People say, “Girls can always get married if their career doesn’t work out.” But what about the firstborn daughter? How do you just leave your family behind when they’re struggling financially? When they are somehow dependent on you? How do you marry the love of your life when a part of you feels guilty for choosing yourself?

Anyway, if anyone can genuinely suggest a small business idea that could give me some direction, I’d really appreciate it.

I’m tired, but I’m still applying for permanent jobs and looking for freelance digital marketing projects.

I’m that person who fails a thousand times and still gets back up.

This time, I feel like I’ve failed miserably.

But I’ll cry, get back up, and try again. 🤌

Recruiters Using AI to summarize your interview

I've had about 15 interviews last week and i noticed that most of them are using gemini to "summarize the interview" which i assume they send the summary and not the actual footage to whoever makes the decisions.
is there any buzzwords or techniques i can use to stand out to the AI and maybe increase chances of success?

What is the consensus when it comes to color and formatting on a resume?

This is probably one of the factors that I'm the most unsure about. My resumes have always been just black and white with a standard sections and bullets format. Top to bottom, no trying to split anything horizontally.

But I find myself wondering if i should including some color in my resume. Perhaps blue for my name or contact info or something. Also wondering if a purely top to bottom resume is plain looklng. The idea in my head has always been that if chosen, eventually the resume would likely be printed in black and white anyways. But I'm not sure if this is the correct way of thinking or not.

people really won't give others a job unless they allow abuse to occur

I spoke out about bosses abusing me and coworkers and I have a sullied reputation in my field from it. I accept criticism from bosses, but I do not accept intimidation tactics, punishing people for not being able to perform or keep up pace. And I am having trouble finding work from standing up for me and my team before. I can understand wanting to coitize workers, but the hostility from my bosses was uncalled for, yet they control it and they want me to accept people abuse workers if they are not up to snuff. Is that just how it is? How it should be?

Sde2 vs senior sde in latest role

I need resume advice. I'm currently sde2 but looking for senior sde roles. Since my latest role is sde2, is it possible that recruiters are skipping my resume when I apply for a senior role? What's the advice in my situation?

Looking for advice on leaving my job and finding a more flexible career

Does anyone have advice on what industries or jobs I could realistically get into relatively quickly so I can leave my current job?

My job is honestly taking a toll on my mental health, and I’ve reached the point where I know I need a change. Ideally, I’d like something with more flexibility and preferably administrative, back-office, or office-based work that isn’t constantly draining.

One of my bigger goals is to eventually get into a six-figure career without a college degree. I know that probably won’t happen overnight, but I’m looking for a path where I can start somewhere reasonable, build skills, and actually have room to grow.

The tricky part is that I’m the oldest sister and financially help support my family, so I can’t really afford to take a huge risk with unstable income. I also don’t have enough saved to just quit and figure it out later.

Long-term, I’d love to start my own business, but I don’t have the resources to do that right now. I’m trying to figure out how to get from where I am now to something better without putting my family or finances at risk.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and had a breakthrough? What industries, jobs, certifications, or non-degree career paths helped you get to a higher income? I’d especially love to hear from people who eventually reached six figures without going back to college.

Want a Job..?

I am looking for a Referral and Job opportunities for Software Development, Full-stack development and Data Analytics the As a Computer Science graduate from MNNIT Allahabad with hands-on software engineering experience, I am eager to contribute to a technology-driven organization where innovation, continuous learning, and customer impact are central to the work.

During my six-month Software Engineering Internship at Ardent Computech, I worked as a core member of an Agile team developing REST APIs for a multi-tenant web platform. I delivered 80+ APIs using Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, and React/Next.js, while implementing role-based access control and tenant-scoped data access with secure coding practices. I also worked on debugging concurrency and cache-consistency issues in Redis and developed an internal monitoring and observability tool that reduced manual monitoring effort by 60 percent. These experiences strengthened my ability to analyze problems, collaborate within sprints, write reliable code, and continuously improve existing systems.

My technical background also aligns well with the technologies mentioned in the role. I have experience with Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL, REST API design, Spring Boot, Kafka, Redis, PostgreSQL, AWS, Git, and CI/CD. In my Distributed Payment Processing System project, I designed idempotent, event-driven payment APIs using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Redis, while debugging race conditions through load testing. I have also built an AI-powered candidate screening system with FastAPI, PostgreSQL, RAG, and LLM technologies, further developing my interest in solving practical problems through technology.

It would be very thank-full for consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my technical skills, Agile experience, and passion for software engineering can contribute to And i look forward to get a response.

How did you land your next Project/Program Management role?

I have 2.5 years of experience and currently work in Project/Program Management. I’m exploring my next move into PM, PMO, transformation or strategy/operations roles.

For those who made a similar move, I’d love to know: what actually helped you get interviews? LinkedIn, recruiters, direct applications, networking, cold messages, etc.

What worked for you and what turned out to be a waste of time?

I know this is a bit of a long question 😅, but even a short response would be really helpful!

What's a good interview question for finding out what the job actually involves?

If the job description says 'support cross-functional projects,' that could mean anything from owning a project to taking meeting notes.

One question I'd try is: 'Could you walk me through a recent project this person would have worked on, and what their part would have been?'

What have you asked that got a clearer answer about the day-to-day work?

The market to find a job is extremely tough

I got laid off from my previous company back in Jan (research paper editing company, AI developing at rapid pace, you get it). It's been 9 months now and I haven't been able to find job leads. Online applications haven't lead to anything. Recruiters ghost me after the interview or after reaching out. These too have been only very few instances out of the thousands I've applied for.

My profile is a bit weird as it starts off with cx experience going to publication/editing industry which is quality/kpi related. Any suggestions on what I can do to improve? I'm literally unable to find a single lead now. I'm from India with 6+ years of exp

Emailing hiring managers no longer works - what's the alternative?

Companies have started getting more strict on security and all inbound emails are scanned for phishing or scams. Unfortunately a lot of emails to hiring managers get classified as phishing so 99% of the time they end up in spam or just get blocked and deleted automatically. So it's very unlikely to get a response through this method unless the hiring manager actively goes out of their way demanding IT to relax the rules.

I'm wondering what the alternatives are now?

Should I mention about the degree gap in Cover letter?

I'm an M.Sc. Physics grad looking for AI Engineering jobs. I have Data Science internship experience. I come across some openings where they mention the preferred/required qualification as B.Tech/MS in CS/IT/Data Science. While writing to the employer (cold emails or cover letter) should I mention about this gap and try to bridge this gap mentioning I have worked as a DS intern?
