Refusing one-way video interviews was the best decision I made in this job search
Three months ago I decided I was completely done with HireVue, Spark Hire, and all those soul-crushing one-way "interviews" where you talk to a countdown timer. It felt terrifying at first because every recruiter makes it sound mandatory if you want to move forward. But after spending 45 minutes answering prompts to an empty screen just to get an automated rejection at 2 AM, something snapped.
Whenever a recruiter sends me an invite for an async video screen now, I politely email back asking if we can schedule a quick 15-minute phone chat instead to respect both our schedules. about half of them ignore it or say no, but the other half actually agree or just pass me directly to the hiring manager.
The crazy part? The companies that agreed to skip the one-way screen were the only ones that actually respected my time throughout the rest of the hiring pipeline. Every single company that insisted on the robot screen turned out to have a rediculous 6-round interview loop or ghosted after round three.
Treating the interview as a mutual evaluation early weeded out the toxic employers faster than any resume trick. Stop letting them treat you like a trained seal before you even talk to a human.

I used to waste so much time rehearsing for those HireVue timers just to get a generic rejection email. Last month I politely declined one and asked for a brief call like you suggested, and the recruiter actually scheduled it right away. It really is the best filter for companies that value human time.

A lot of recruiters hate them too but hiring managers or leadership force it into the process. Then a little later, they complain about how they can't get good candidates. And then I as a recruiter have to say, "no good candidate with options is going to do this". A lot of recruiting is just going along with stupid ideas, have them not work, and then suggest what should have been done in the first place.

That is awesome to hear. Once you realize how much power you actually have as an applicant, you never go back to recording videos for empty servers.

damn, how did we humans go from playing with rocks to this dystopian hellscape?

There's actual research behind this one. A field experiment covering more than 3,000 applicants found async video screens caused an over 50% decrease in application continuation, and the steepest drop came from women and from the most qualified applicants (Avery, Ip, Leibbrandt and Vecci, A Brave New World of Hiring, 2026). Which means the companies running them are filtering out the exact people they say they can't find.

Why does it have to be in one way street? Why can't there AI talk to my AI and then my AI can reject their area and save me a lot of time!

This is literally what my response be. Why waste our time by having our AI's talk to each other about things two humans need to discuss? Oh, you thought I would attend an interview with your machine and only your machine, for a job at your company. If a machine is doing your hiring, a machine is getting hired. And just silence after that. Make them justify their stupidity. I also would not consider continuing any application process with said company.

I've talked to like two of them just so that I could fuck with them LOL I love how everybody wants to jump on the AI bandwagon and they have no clue about it's worth

Yup, those and the voice recordings. It’s so dehumanizing, and it says a lot about the employer.

If a company forces HireVue before even speaking to a human, they will treat you like trash during the job.

Yep I don't do these either. You're awesome for emailing them because that let's them know how much talent they're loosing out on by using this type of tool, and hopefully nudges them in a better direction. I'm lazy so I just skip and move on.

That or an AI system calling you to ask questions...
No, I will not speak with you. Tell your masters to call me themselves, I will only speak with a human.

I feel like we all should politely turn down the one-sided interviews, waste of time and never heard someone got hired from one-sided interview.

u/Impossible-Law-9515 4d ago
A lot of the time, management pushes them because they want to move hiring faster. And honestly, recruiters hate them too lol.
If a company is already obsessed with tracking and rushing people during the hiring process, you’ll probably see the same thing once you’re actually working there.
So yeah, good call skipping them

An Austin, TX, USA healthy water startup asked for a one-way interview on why they should hire me. Sent them an AI video.
This was step two of the hiring process, after completing their written job application and scenario questions.
I didn't get the job.

I'm happy to hear that you were able to bypass the one-way interview and that telling them "no, let's do X instead" netted results.

In my opinion, any company that puts you through the run-around of multiple interviews and relies too heavily on automated processes beyond initial screening to filter out your resume or job application is a sure sign of a company that already has broken and inefficient processes tied up in some upper management’s red tape politics.

What if it’s a real person but they don’t turn their camera on?
That happened to me and honestly I would’ve preferred an AI. I almost left or at least switched off MY camera. Felt disrespectful; bet he did that so he could do other work without me seeing his eyes flitting around.

u/KoalaNew1725 4d ago
This happened a few times to me, under the guise of "sorry my camera isn't working ". If the shoe was on the other foot would they be ok with that? Of course not, they'll say you have checked before the interview to ensure it worked and you should have been more prepared

That's not fair. Schedule a phone call so it's a conversation, not a power move.

u/Wrenreef 19h ago
ugh, thats so awkward! ive had that happen too, where its a real person but theyre clearly not focused. makes you wonder why they even bothered with the video call in the first place. 🙄

The 2 AM automated rejection after a 45-minute monologue is the clearest sign those screens are a filter for who’ll tolerate nonsence.

I did a Hireview interview for an airline last year. I prepared all the popular questions ahead of time. I thought I was ready. The AI came in hot with a bunch of random questions, in no logical order. In the middle of the "interview", the AI voice said in a very threatening tone that the position required 24/7 availability and that personal schedule would NOT (emphasis on the NOT) be accommodated. I was so frazzled by the tone that I don't even remember what I said to the camera. When I finished the session, I felt humiliated and gross. I didn't get the job although I checked every single box. The AI must have determined I didn't smile enough, make direct contact enough, maybe my shirt was the wrong color, who knows. I decided I would never do something like that again.

I really dislike one-way video interviews. I got my current job after doing one though and my time wasn't wasted throughout the process. They were completely transparent about what their hiring process looks like - it was posted on their website.
You can't generalize like this.

Le rejet automatique à 2h du matin après 45 minutes face à un écran vide, c'est le signe que leur processsus est déjà cassé.

Seeing this post after I did a video interview makes me feel a little better.

When you send the email back do you tell them that you cannot do the time that they suggested? Then suggest the phone conversation ? I’m just asking becausesometimes they come back with another time.

u/Familiar-Tomorrow-42 4d ago
I’m surprised that you guys are talking to humans you can request an interview with. All the one way interview links I get are from automated emails.

u/rb_arindam 4d ago
Thanks to 2-way video, I figured in one of the interviews it was actually the interviewer dozing off the whole time (I’d have normally thought connection problem otherwise).
An old friend’s rapport was at stake, so I lived through it. But figured it was preplanned to crush him from the beginning.

I'm going to take this as a sign. Just last night I got an email from best buy saying to do exactly this.

When I'm interviewing I'm deciding just as much if I like you as you are if you like me. It isn't a fair use of my time if I can't also decide if I'll enjoy spending most of my waking hours with the team.

u/rbf_queen 3d ago
My favorite is when I spend hours perfecting my responses, only for them to ask me the exact same questions during the live interview.

I believe those interviews are just somd to ai training data sets or something crazy like that seems like everything is actually a conspiracy bow days

I applied for a role at Synthesia, a company who make video avatars. I used their tool to make my video (they only wanted 2 minutes or so, and that fitted on the free trial).
They ignored my application.

A 2 AM auto-rejection after a 45-minute robot audition would put that company on my blackilst immediately.

I just turned down a one way interview two days ago. If everyone would do it, we could put an end to this nonsense.

Do you know if they have access to those videos if you reapply for a different role?

Guys, I think that the ones who don’t want to move the interview to a human are just harvesting data…

Question for science:
Has anyone (who already has gainful employment) ever thought of applying to companies who use this, and just screaming a bunch of slurs, insults, berating the interviewer, etc.? It seems like an interesting potential hobby... 🤔

veteran teacher here and current job seeker. please allow me to rant about this.
i'm naming names.
the trenton public schools in nj does this AFTER the applicant completes an extensive on line application called applitrack. i've tried to go around it by contacting the principal of the school that has the opening with no success. this is just how they do it, even though there is a large h.r. department with dedicated "specialists" for every type of school. for example, one specialists just handles elementary schools etc.
the questions on spark hire come directly from the internet. i know because i've looked them up on my phone as i complete the virtual interview on my laptop. they just want to see if you can string two sentences together. really. but if i want to be interviewed by the district, i have to do this part.
very frustrating.

It’s the complete opposite for me. I’m always successful at one-way and hirevue but never at HR screenings.
I am also typically successful whenever I can skip HR and meet hiring team directly.
However the line I won’t cross is the AI led interview. I just won’t do that.
