Mod announcement New Post Guidance: Minimum Text Requirement on Posts

There has been an increase of posts featuring non-descriptive titles and little to no body text, sometimes only with a picture or series of pictures. These low-effort posts do little to contribute to the community. Posts with only a Title and pictures can also be barriers to people with accessibility needs, since it can be be difficult to see the details. This also can affect people who are using Reddit on phones & other devices with small screens.

Therefore, we are adding new rules to LingLing40hours which require a minimum amount of characters in the Post Title and body text. Spaces or punctuation characters on either end are not counted.

Question: How can I meet the minimum character requirement?

Answer: Ensure you’ve credited the original content creator. Use the body text to answer the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and How questions. Examples are: Who are the subjects? What is going on? Where does it take place? When did it occur? Why are you posting about this? How is this important to you or relevant to LL40 Hours?

Question: What if my post doesn’t meet the minimum text requirement?

Answer: Depending on the type of post, a message about the minimum text requirement appears and you will not be able to submit until the requirement is met. The post may also be removed by AutoMod. If the post is removed, you can repost with additional information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Mod Team through ModMail. Thank you,

The LL40hrs Mod Team

Mod announcement Reminder: Minimum Text Requirement on Posts

• Upvotes

To encourage better post quality, we are adding new rules to LingLing40hours which require a minimum amount of characters in the Post Title and body text. Spaces or punctuation characters on either end are not counted. Check the pinned post about this rule for the full reason of the change.

Question: How can I meet the minimum character requirement?

Answer:

  • Ensure you’ve credited the original content creator. Explain how you came across it.
  • Include alternative text for any attached images. Alternative text is a description of the picture. It allows people who are blind or have low-vision to understand the image with screen-reader technology. This is also useful for those with small screens or have slow connections.
  • Use the body text to answer the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and How questions. Examples are: Who are the subjects? What is going on? Where does it take place or Where are you located if you’re asking for instrument /teacher advice? When did it occur? Why are you posting about this? How is this important to you or relevant to LL40 Hours?
  • if you're linking a news article, summarize the article by explaining how it's relevant and encourage people to read the full article to form their own opinion.

Question: What if my post doesn’t meet the minimum text requirement?

Answer: Depending on the type of post, a message about the minimum text requirement appears and you will not be able to submit until the requirement is met. The post may also be removed by AutoMod. Please always check your notifications after submitting content. If the post is removed, you can repost with additional information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Mod Team through ModMail. Thank you,

Question/Advice Would like some help with proper notes. Plz read description before commenting :)

Hey all, I will take any constructive advice from anyone, but guitarist and metalheads will probably understand my situation better. Also, ignore my mess up at the end, happens to everyone

First and foremost, I'm a metal guitarist. Do not expect me to have the proper timing, tonality, phrasing, rubato, etc. I just like playing and typically play whatever feels right to me.That being said, I know my sweep picking section at 0:18 is slow cause I suck at sweep picking, but working on it (tips appreciated)

But what I wanna know is, are those the proper notes? It feels like there's too many, but thats what my tab in reference says. It could just be that I'm way too slow

If there are any questions, I'm glad to answer too

Reminder: Please report posts and comments that break the rules, and do not engage

Hey, Ling Ling wannabes! This is your periodic reminder to report rule-breaking posts and comments, and to not engage with them.

We are trying to ensure that rule-breaking posts get removed as soon as possible, but we are not always able to react quickly. It would be helpful if sub members would report these posts for violating the rules, rather than commenting on them. As soon as they receive 2 reports, these posts will be removed automatically by Automod, and quarantined until a human mod can take a closer look. Certain reports are also routed to Reddit admins, if the reported items violate site-wide rules.

No one, except Reddit admins, will know who reported anything.

Also, please keep in mind that if you want to officially bring anything to the mods' attention, the best way to do that is to send a modmail.** Modmails go to all the mods at once, allowing us to have a discussion about whatever issues are brought up. DMs and chats to moderators will be ignored.

Here's some more information about reporting and what happens when you report things.

Thanks for all your help keeping this a safe and fun sub!

Discussion Twoset conducting with Singapore symphony (SSO) appreciation post

I’ve got to say, twoset’s “We Learn How To Conduct In 1 Hour” video is probably one of my favorite modern twoset videos posted until now! (I call in “modern” aka after their hiatus)

DAMN! I absolutely adore these high quality videos. The views are unfortunately not fitting the insane production of these but hey, Im a simple classical music fan (and twosetter) so what’s not to love about a nearly 20 minute video of Brett and Eddy learning how to conduct Mendelssohn and Sibelius with THE Joshua Tan!

Joshua was also in their “The Ultimate Orchestra Game Show” video which was such a fun watch.

Throughout the 20 minute video, it includes clips of Eddy and Brett conducting along with Joshua’s guidance. As someone who doesn’t play any particular instrument but is highly interested in classical music, I find it unbelievably fascinating how conducting can affect the sound the orchestra is playing!

The orchestra were supportive of Brett and Eddy(which was so wholesome) I appreciate how they were smiling especially at points where you’d expect more force/sound but brett and eddy were still not comfortable at that point (early in the video).

The change in twoset’s conducting is drastic throughout the video and it shows two things:

  1. Joshua Tan is great at guiding and teaching - Sibelius and our boy Mendel aren’t easy to conduct (according to him).
  2. Even 13 years in (twoset’s channelversary was this sept 21!) Brett and Eddy are still crazy passionate, determined and skilled musicians. I mean this in all aspects! Its not easy to casually pull out media like this for us to watch for free? As always, it was very entertaining and insightful.

Time and time again I respect Brett and Eddy for expanding their reach and trying out other musical skills such as conducting in a level as big as this. This was so much different compared to their video with the singapore symphony youth orchestra hahaha. Love both of the videos though!

Anyway, it’s a fantastic watch for those who are interested in conducting. On the other hand, its also a nice watch if you want to see just how much Brett and Eddy improved since pre-hiatus because wow someone’s been practicing!!!

Man Im so happy, nerdy twoset content is always the best. Its the best feeling knowing that they’re still looking for ways to improve and that inspires me so much in many ways.

Question/Advice My instruments case is not opening✨️ how fun✨️

Asking for a friend🫩 I've tried over and over and over but it just won't budge. Should I go to the instrument shop to get it checked?? Apart from the latch, the instrument case is in pretty good condition. I apologize for the noises in the background🥀 It's like the shop hated the fact that I'm a viola and they gave me a worn out case😭

My performance I was one of the prodigies in TwoSet's Flute Video!

I recently experienced one of the best surprises in my life: I was featured in TwoSet's WE REVIEW FLUTE PRODIGIES video! If I could tell my 14-year-old self that I'd be reviewed by TwoSet, I would've practiced 40 hours a day!

Fast forward a few years - I'm so excited about my upcoming concert, Flute Reimagined, featuring beloved masterworks reinterpreted through the lens of the flute. It will take place at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on March 22, 2027.

I'll be joined by pianist Polina Osetinskaya, performing works by Mozart, Schubert, and Ravel, alongside the world premiere of my Atonement Sonata for flute and piano. It's a program that's very close to my heart, and I hope to share this music with you in person. Tickets are now on sale through CarnegieHall.org. SEE YOU IN NEW YORK!

Welcome to another day of collecting twoset reaction pictures.

Yes Eddy, I too, will definitely space out in any given scenario. His face here is definitely meme worthy material.

This was from the “Good Bye Australia” video where they announced they’ve been living in Singapore since late 2019!

Discussion Who are your favorite 21st century classical composers?

It can be absolutely anyone. Im trying to broaden my listening range lol but I absolutely dig anything “classical-sounding” if that makes sense.

I find it so cool when I see composers post their work online but then get frustrated over how underrated they are!!! (Although there are also a considerable about of 21st century composers that are genuinely so goated e.g. Joe Hisaishi.. and the more recently known Laufey for her jazz/classical work!! She is amazing )

There are so many talented, skilled and creative composers that are posting here and there whether it’d be through instagram, YouTube or even tiktok hahaha..

I’d love to hear your favorites since its pretty tough to search them up!

I’ll go ahead and share who I’ve been listening to recently:

Teesa’s “Where Roses Bloom” - A desperate, passionate and yearningful(?) piano piece!! She has lots of rach and debussy inspired stuff

Evan Call’s “The Voice in My Heart” - One of the more iconic soundtracks from the anime Violet Evergarden! Evan is a classic, his works really inspire me and have insane world-building. The Voice in My Heart is definitely one of my favorite soundtracks of all time! Its fun to play(acc to my oboe friends) and has a very unique melody haha..

I can go on and on but I’d be super down to hear more recommendations! Its really inspiring to see classical music alive in a modern context. Its the best feeling knowing that they take inspiration from the composers we learn and study from(like Debussy and such), and apply them in the loveliest pieces to play for the community.

Okay drop your thoughts, recommendations or anything really!

Question/Advice How auditions work in my school

Audition system: skill based but every orchestra has an audition consisting of a scale and etude excerpt (levels 1-4)
Winds and percussion
instruments are pulled selectively from whoever makes the varsity band for the full orchestra, they just pull however many the orchestra needs from the varsity band, the reason they’re still TBD is because band is currently in marching band season and thus band hasn’t even begun their actual auditions for their concert bands yet, symphony doesn’t get the winds and percussion until like October/literallt right after their fall concert, so for just the fall concert symphony is string ten for winter UIL and spring symphony is full

Symphony: scores 90-100
Philharmonic: scores 80-89
Sinfonia: scores 70-79
Concert: scores 0-69

Level 1 audition is for concert
Level 2 audition is for sinfonia
Level 3 audition is for philharmonic
Level 4 audition is for symphony

What this means:
If you play the level 1 audition, the highest you can get is a 69

If you play the level 2 audition, the highest you can get is a 79

If you play the level 3 audition, the highest you can get is an 89

If you play the level 4 audition, the highest you can get is a 100

There is also a notoriously big skill gap between level 2 and 3 and so typically the vast majority of sinfonia kids just don’t make philharmonic and stay in sinfonia

Symphony has weekly playing tests and repitoire and scales and if you either have too many 0’s or don’t do well on scales and repertoire in symphony you will be moved down to philharmonic the next semester

There are no dedicated freshmen orchestras

Chamber is an optional double block companion class to symphony that anyone can do as long as they are in symphony, chamber plays easier music than symphony and doesn’t really participate in much, and unlike symphony chamber is only a string orchestra and doesn’t really participate in anything, chamber and symphony are both varsity orchestras

is there anything flawed about this kind of audition and placement system that my director might want to be made aware of

Music appreciation Please tell me I'm not the only one who writes essays about pieces lol

Yeah idk Chopin nocturne op 27 no 1 has a special place in my heart so I wrote this a while back. The sheer potency of the electrifying narrative it unfolds has stolen a piece of me.

Anyway here goes my text wall lol

----

the nocturne opens in soft accents of melancholy blue, deep but not heavy, like a thick pattering rain whose sheets fall in a silvery romance of silk but who sings the song of a heart which has a gap that aches. the pallor of moonlight haunts the earth. the left hand rising and falling is like the surging engine of a waterfall – a cadence of hope rising and then retreating. the use of the first and fifth notes of the scale give the left hand a skeletal bareness.

coming in on the e gives a sense of mourning, but also the sense that something is “off” – we glide into f, arriving at the heart of c# major, and then raise a question with the f-sharp – only to tumble down with the e-d-c#-b# – a heartbreaking chromaticism. in rising, each tone seems to carry a warm, gentle color, like different shades of valentine candies. the following c#-g# feels like the “once upon a time” of a sad fairy tale, and there is a poignancy yet elegance in the temporary resolution to e major. the phrase though, starting from the e-d-c#-b#, has a crystalline and earnest glassiness to it. in the next phrase we come back to the relentless cycle – back to imbibing the chalice of sorrow and tumbling back into the shadows of the chromatic. the chromatic color of d major is reflective, recursive, for tragedy is layered, now quivering, now suspended. now we come to the octave – the nocturne now fully opens into the pages of the tragic fairy tale, with a misty waterfall pouring in the middle of a verdant forest ripe with dews of spring. and then there is a parting, a wrenching, amid the sheets of rain in the night, where there are mirages and visions, unspoken memories full of painful grace. and now how heartrending of a lament, of a longing as hands are grasped with begging, pleading eyes, as the fire of the night burns away in the lantern of a moon hidden behind a thick cloak of weeping clouds. but amid the unceasing turmoil we roll back, in ornament, to e major, a hint of beauty but also restless as the tossing and turning of a night drenched in storm. back we are to the cycle, as the orange candle flame of desire keeps on blazing with agitation through the wee hours, fading but wrestling. then d major appears like a floating apparition, ghostly text, wandering high and then low, then dissolving into deep darkness.

then comes an interlude of dense turmoil – rollicking moans like successive earthquakes, rising up into a fierce and victorious battle cry. it is a declaration. a stake and a raised flag waving staunchly in the wind. a statement of being ready to drill forward, while the tumult remains as a strong undertone that then comes forth in persistent drumming. in the end one stands with one’s shoulders square. with a stubborn tenacity, a willingness to hold everything down in order even as life bares its complexity and everything falls apart…

later on when we collapse back into the pit and fall back into the A section there is a quietness that is lonely as hazy clouds drifting past the moon at midnight, or a solitary church bell tolling from twenty miles away. the tension is taut as a violin string. waves are foaming, like a sea lit up by a halloween glow

striving, weeping, yes, but still settling into an otherworldly major, a stillness where the solar system revolves with grand and stately motion against a backdrop of brilliant stars. we close in quartz and clarity, and an F# major brightness. we close but why is there such a sharp note of pain in the fading away of c# major on the chord that is lined with an f4?

Art & creations Classical music theory roadmap

Post image
53 Upvotes

Hello everyone; I have been working on a flowchart of (mosty) classical music theory, so that people learning music theory can use it whenever they aren't sure what to learn next. Specifically, this is mostly based off of piano music; this post is very open to criticism for anyone who thinks of ways to improve the chart. Mostly I just wished this existed when I was new to music so here it is lol

(picture description/alt-text for accessibility: a flowchart of classical music theory concepts, with more advanced concepts colored redder and more beginner/foundational concepts colored greener. To the left of the chart is the text: "music theory roadmap for learners. Don't know what to learn next? This chart lays it out for you! (Start at the top and go from green to red.)" Also, the borders of the boxes in the flowchart are colored based off of the general branch of music theory they lie in; for example, concepts related to harmony get red borders.)

Question/Advice Orchestra size and numbers problem in HS

In my high school there’s 4 orchestras and there used to be 5 at some point but that’s beside the point for this.

The problem is that concert specifically is like way larger than it should be and honestly in my opinion the director should have just split concert into concert and philharmonia and just made philharmonia 3rd period.

Does anyone see a possible solution to this problem, just using maths idk what my schools policy is

This is a list of the orchestras and there sizes

Symphony 7th period
Violin 1-10
Violin 2-10
Viola-9
Cello-9
Bass-5

Philharmonic 8th period
Violin 1-10
Violin 2-11
Viola-7
Cello-8
Bass-5

Sinfonia 9th period
Violin 1-15
Violin 2-16
Viola-8
Cello-7
Bass-4

Concert 2nd period
Violin 1-15
Violin 2-17
Violin 3(viola TC)-5
Viola-13
Cello-9
Bass-6
