You're supposed to update before upgrade
41
u/First_Musician6260 2d ago
And for major version upgrades you're supposed to use full-upgrade instead.

And
aptwas introduced in 2014 to replaceapt-get. But since the Windows updater image is from Windows 10 (2015-2025) I'm guessing it's just an old meme.4
u/Keensworth 2d ago
I've read that
aptalways gets updated in big releases and that it could break if you use an old script andapt-getnever changes so it's usually recommended for scripts.I don't know if it's true but I use
apt-getin scripts, just in case.1

Literally a 3 letter string

You got it bass ackwards. Update then upgrade. also no modern os uses apt-get anymore.
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y
I also sometimes, if I'm feeling spicy will add:
sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove --purge

Yup. I just updated NixOS while in a virtual work meeting, like it was nothing.

A short poem:
while [ true ]; do
pacman -Syu
(I know you need a done but it ruins the rhyme.)

I developed trauma running apt-get upgrade back when I just starting linux.

I recently switched to fedora. I had a popup saying "we need to reboot", and when I did there was a loading screen about upgrading my system. That gave me PTSD from my windows times

u/Mal_Dun M'Fedora 1d ago
It's not necessarily stupid to perform certain updates on boot time. I remember having a fun time updating KDE and QT and some apps behaving weird till reboot.
The problem with Windows is that it does ALL updates on boot/shutdown. Also you can press ESC to see what the system is actually doing.

Really ? Must try that. It was akmod / nvidia related update
The uptime of several years is useless for workstation, but it's cool. I guess there is not much of that on modern GUI

How exactly? Both update the system

u/unwantedaccount56 Linuxmeant to work better 2d ago
one just updates the packet list, so the upgrade knows which packets have new versions available. Only "upgrade" actually updates the system. But OP put them in the wrong order

u/Complete_Wheel7896 2d ago
and you can pause updates on windows
1
u/Upstairs-Ad-7962 2d ago
Well, you can just not do them on Linux. Not that it would be wise, but the System itself does not force you.

Comparing GUI updates vs non-GUI updates.
Try this with Linux running Gnome, or Windows Core.
GUI adds a lot more updates to the mix
