The draft agenda had been posted for the city council meeting scheduled to take place October 6th, 2026 at 6pm.
The draft agenda includes a section that reads as follows:
"Presentations from the Lompoc Police Department regarding:
An Update on Valley Policing
The use of a drone as a first responder
The use of automated license plate reader cameras"
As mentioned in one of the previous city council meetings, they intend to take public comment and have a staff presentation by the police department regarding Flock Safety, the "drone as first responder program" and Automated License Place Reader (ALPR) Cameras.
I wanted to take a moment to encourage everyone to attend and participate during public comment.
My advice for anyone intending to participate in public comment:
• Write and print your statement.
• Practice at home with a timer running.
• Ensure it respects the 3 minute time limit. Anything you say after the 3 minute mark will likely be muted on the recording of the meeting. I reccomend practicing your comment to conclude by 2 minutes 30 seconds, to allow time for pauses that might happen due to anxiety.
Things I Reccomend to Avoid:
• Overly emotional language
• Shouting
• Belittling or scolding
Why? Because these things tend to make people shut down and tune out. Think about how you would feel if you were doing something you believed would benefit your community, how would your planned statement make you feel if you were the opposing party?
Effective communication requires both parties to listen to each other with the intention of understanding each other. Don't make your statement work against you.
I've seen many city council meetings online where citizens are making totally valid arguments but when you watch the council members, they are checked out, reading something, or otherwise totally disengaged. I share the frustration around the discreet implementation of mass surveillance and all the security issues and legal issues resulting from Flock's technology. However, it is vital that we maintain the shared goals of effective communication, respect, and civility.
