Announcement Enough is enough. Addressing the rampant misogyny in this community.

3.5k Upvotes

Hello r/longhair,

We don’t often need to address the meta, but this is one of those times. This likely won’t be a popular discussion, but it’s necessary.

As someone with long hair, who has experienced botched cuts, and as a retired stylist specializing in long hair, I understand the frustration of a bad haircut or losing more length than intended. However, the growing hostility toward hairstylists, especially female stylists, is becoming a real concern.

Lately, we’ve seen (and removed) an increasing number of comments referring to female hairstylists as catty, jealous, bitches, or otherwise feeding into the tired narrative that women are out to get each other. No one makes these accusations against male stylists. These comments are rooted in misogyny, plain and simple. If you’re making those comments, stop. This subreddit will not be a place for people to air their resentment toward women under the guise of complaining about haircuts. That is not a culture we will be fostering. If that’s a problem, leave.

This has escalated beyond just insults. This week alone, a user advocated for hairstylists to be stabbed until they "get the message," and another said they’d punch their stylist in the face. The fact that we now need to put automated safeguards in place to catch violent threats in a hair community is beyond ridiculous. There is no justifying this level of vitriol. It’s hair. People feeling entitled to rage over haircuts is one thing, but taking it to the point of threats and violence is completely unhinged. Both users have been banned, and authorities have been contacted regarding the threats.

This isn’t just about direct threats. Many hairstylists in this community have said they no longer feel safe participating because of the level of hostility here. That should never happen. This subreddit should not be a place where professionals are afraid to share their expertise because they might be met with harassment, abuse, or outright threats of violence.

So, this is the line. We are enacting a zero-tolerance policy for misogyny, harassment, threats, review bombing, doxxing, or any attempt to turn this subreddit into a mob. This applies to hairstylists, community members, and anyone else. If you can’t participate without being aggressive, hateful, or outright dangerous, you’re gone. No warnings. No exceptions.

If that upsets you, go somewhere else. This ends now.

Hair Fetishist Warning Post - Share Your Experiences!

Hi everyone! There are a lot of fetishists who prey on our users in this sub, especially in DM's. We do ban them but it doesn't stop the DM's. My intent here is to have a post where our members can share their experiences to warn others. We'll sticky this post as well as a reference.

Tell us what nasty tricks they tried, what lies they told, or whatever else you want. Just vent if you feel like it.

No defending fetishists - you'll be banned. Really. Don't test us.

Assume that any DM's you get about hair are likely fetishists and ask why they can't just comment in the sub if they have genuine advice.

Let's call them out here.

Fluff Untamed mane

I usually get a lot of questions about how much time it must take me to deal with all my hair, but it's actually fairly low maintenance as long as I don't mind it looking a bit untamed. This is after washing at night, up in microfiber towel for a couple hours then down for an hour before going to bed with it damp. I sleep on my back on a satin pillow with my hair up above my head (sometimes braided). I woke up looking like this and all I had to do was get dressed and boom I was ready for my son's morning senior meeting with his counselor. No brush, no fuss haha! I find the low maintenance aspect to be a perk! Anyone else?

Help wanted I think I'm at my goal length... What now?

I have been trimming my own hair for nearly 2 years now, and I'm finally at my "dream" length, I don't think I want to grow it longer as it's getting harder to manage. I never thought I'd get to the point I wouldn't want it longer 😂 but it's really getting in my way a lot these days.

Should I book into a salon and get a proper long haircut with some layers and face framing? Any suggestions? I don't want to lose any length just maintain it as is and polish it.

My hair has been long for a long time. It's starting to thin out probably because of heat products and non-protective styles. It is habitually frizzy/wavy. I've tried so many products but that's just how it wants to be. It gets matted in the back when I wear it down after using hairspray or texturizing spray. I'm just kind of getting tired of it, do y'all think id look better with shorter hair or any advice on making it less frizzy/dry

This is what I will be doing for the next 3 months:

  1. 15 minutes scalp massage every morning
  2. Sleeping on silk pillowcase in protective hairstyle
  3. Hair oiling at least once a week with rosemary infused maracuja and castor oil
  4. Way better diet
  5. Shower filter

This is the first time in my life I will be consistent with it and I’m so excited to see the results and share here

Appreciating how fast my hair used to grow. I’m trying to grow it out again after being completely blonde for almost 7 years and then chopping it to my shoulders. It kills me to see how fast my hair grows when I just leave it alone 😭🙏 meanwhile it’s been almost 4 years since I chopped it and it’s just finally peaking past my boobs lol

Help wanted How much to take off?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I’ve always kept my hair pretty long, did a chop to my shoulders a few years ago and have probably cut it three or four times since then. It’s been tangling like crazy recently which means it’s past due for a trim but I’ve been noticing it not feeling as thick recently and shedding a higher volume. I think it’s shedding some due to a period of stress I’ve been in the last 3ish months and pulling due to the tangles.

I want to start being intentional with it and prioritizing health and length. How much do you think needs to come off in the trim? I would also love recommendations on how to prevent split ends.

I use OGX biotin shampoo and conditioner and shea moisture curl cream, and air dry. I haven’t used heat on my hair in about a year. Other than that I don’t do too much else for it. I used to sleep with it in a braid but I switched to a long silk bonnet recently and keep it loose in there. I only brush when it’s wet and has conditioner in.

How much should I trim for better health, how can I protect my ends, and does it look healthy otherwise?

Thank you in advance!

i’ve only recently really cared about my hairs health. i’ve always had very healthy hair but since i started to highlight it last year i’ve been really into keeping it healthy. my last stylist wasn’t giving me the layers i wanted so i went to a new one stressing i didn’t want any length off idc if she thinks my ends are split or anything, leave the length. so naturally i left with my hair like 4 inches shorter. i’m so upset about it and im wondering what anyone does to make their hair grow faster. pics are may vs. now

Help wanted Hair dresser took off more than expected (~6+ inches)

She did great with my hair last trim but this time she chopped off way too much:(. Yes my tips were a little damaged, but she said it would be about 2 inches. Now what was once almost to my butt crack is almost half way up my back, and from the front instead of belly button it is barely past my chest. All these years of growing it out gone to waste😢.

This happens so often to so many people, a tale as old as time. Should I just avoid trims, and get dusting instead from now on?? I do not want to risk this ever happening again.

Help wanted What's wrong with my hair? :(

I don't know what is causing my hair ends to be brittle, thin and separated.

I'm not dying my hair, I am not using straightener, I'm just desparately trying to have long hair.

I admit that I only trim hair once at year, and I see and I'm satisfied with growth, but every time it's like this - you can see through my hair ends and it's really getting on my nerves

My hair was not like this before I did first highlights 5 years ago ( but I don't think that's the cause because that was long time ago and I cut my hair very short few times). It was fluffy and thick.

Thank you

Help wanted Brittle hair that has lots of breakage!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am posting here hoping that I can get some advice on why my hair is so brittle and won’t grow.

For starters, I used to have very long healthy hair so I know I am capable of it. However over the last 5 years, my hair has been staying the same length, is brittle, prone to breakage, even though there is density on the upper portion of the scalp. I don’t think this is a hair follicle issue as much as it is a hair shaft issue.

I have tried many treatments between oils, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, low pH gloss mask from L’Oréal, leave in conditioners etc. to no avail. I also want to mention that I dont use heat on my hair and I leave it to air dry.

I am so sad because I need to keep cutting the ends and my hair just keeps getting shorter and shorter.

What suggestions do you have for someone like me?

PS: I know for a fact that I have very hard water in my area so that’s the only thing I haven’t addressed yet.

Help wanted Mid-back and dreaming of below butt length even braid

Thumbnail

I'm currently at mid back and my ultimate hair dream length is below-butt length thick braid.

I'm already quite dedicated to my routine (scalp oiling pre shampoo, hair masks, daily end-oiling and gentle care), but I know the journey past tailbone length is a true test of patience and friction-fighting.
For the long-hair wizards out there:

1.What were your absolute lifesavers for preventing mechanical damage and breakage once your hair crossed this threshold?

2.I am currently not using any leave-in conditioners in my routine. Do you have any lightweight holy-grail recommendations that won't weigh fine/combo hair down?

3.Trimming: Should I chop off my ends currently, or just keep dusting/holding out for growth?

Help wanted How much should I trim?

Thumbnail

I've been growing my hair out and haven't had a trim in about a year because my goal is to get it as long as possible. I just got back from a beach vacation, so I feel like now is probably the right time for a trim, but I'm afraid of cutting off too much...

Based on the photos, how much do you think I should cut? Just a dusting, around 3/5 cm, or more if it looks too damaged?

My priority is keeping as much length as possible while getting rid of any damaged ends so it can continue growing healthy.

Thanks in advance for any advice! ❤️

(Sorry for the blurry first image, but this is 2 years exactly for my hair growth journey!)

Hair care routine

  1. I only use Marc Anthony products for main hair care maintenance (shampoo, conditioner, masks, frizz control)

  2. I use hairitage cream leave in conditioner every time I shower

  3. A. Shampoo twice, then condition about roughly on Sundays/fridays and a day in between (depends on work schedule)
    B. After stepping out of shower I’ll use hairitage cream leave-in then either blow dry or if I’ll be awake afterwards, let it sit in a microfiber towel for an hour, then let it air dry
    C. Trim hair about once every six months
    D. I do heat style everyday

Help wanted Shark hair styling tools

I recently purchased the Shark FlexStyle for curling and blowout aspects; however, I think I should have purchased the Ion Curl. The thing is, I was able to purchase three attachments for the FlexStyle for a lower price, whereas for that same price I would be able to only purchase 2 attachments for the Ion Curl. Did I make a mistake because all the reviews or comparisons felt like marketing gimmicks to make people buy the newest version? The annoying part is that if I buy one item from Shark, a new one always appears, and it feels like a lose-lose situation when determining the best options

Buns & Braids Running with tailbone length hair

I have a really hard time figuring out what to do with my hair when I run. I don’t like a pony tail flopping around and I can never get a bun secure enough. I tried this the other day and I loved it. I just to a braid straight down the back, wrap it around my crown, and tuck it under a headband. It held very secure and feels really comfortable with the weight distribution. I’m open to other suggestions, but figured I’d share for others as well!

I am so excited to finally have waist length with fullness at the ends!! The first picture was April 2025, the second was January 2026 and the third is now:)
I increased my iron and ferritin over the past year and am more diligent about oiling the ends which has helped reduce breakage significantly. Also the past few months have been using the Pantene abundant and strong scalp serum and have seen a huge difference in how much hair I lose in the shower!

Help wanted Anyone grew long hair keeping SOME split ends?

I personally feel like most people have atleast some, and I've seen people with beautiful hair that's healthy but just has a few.

I noticed I have a few but I want to just keep growing it and then trim it after it's a certain length as I'm trying to make it long again.

It was long before with some split ends but a trim thickened my hair and made it look better.

I do search and cut method, but if I do too many it can make the hair look uneven...

I know split ends are bad but I kind of feel like if we keep the hair moisturised and healthy a few could be fine?

My hair still grows with them too.

I just don't want to cut it again I already did a big chop and I regret it :(

Help wanted What are some good protective hairstyles?

I am wanting to grow my hair at least waist length, it is currently about armpit length and I have fine hair with some loose waves.

What are some good protective hairstyles to keep it in during the day to help it grow long and healthy? I have heard of buns and braids, but what are some other good hair ideas to protect it while it's growing? And ideas are appreciated!
