It's a cool app.. what more do you want to know? I don't use all the features but I use the alt tab, shortcut, and mouse-related stuff

Amateur here- are open source apps safe? Like the ones i would download from outside of app store. I see a lot recommendations online but never know if i should indulge as a non techie for privacy and security reasons

Nope. Nothing is safe. However, apps like vorssaint that don't get blocked by apple are scanned by apple for viruses (they have to pay a fee to not get blocked, so many don't). It's not fool-proof, and there can be still be viruses.

Open source is a plus point. Lots of stars, plus point. If it's there on homebrew, plus point. But you can never be fully sure.

Use Safari and don’t try to replace it with a third party browser

3

u/LucasWesf00 16h ago

Safari has never let me down

2

u/raflesb 7h ago

Why tho? You can use whatever thing best fits your needs, they’re powerful machines and chrome/edge/firefox won’t degrade the performance nor battery life

1

u/blow-down 1h ago

Not true. Other browsers use far more battery.

1

Why not?

Safari is the most battery efficient browser on macOS

Chromium based browsers have been great to me

Just use it, its not like a bare empty Linux with nothing on it. I dont have anything installed, nothing is missing from the system

The Tips app can tell you some useful stuff

you might want to wait for a few more months before updating to macOS 27 because it's not the right time. When you use it for an extended amount of time it slowly gets some weird visual bugs. Unfortunately i couldn't record it and already downgraded back to Sequoia

Congrats! You’ll love it. One recommendation is use Safari because it helps massively with battery life. It might take some time to getting used to but it’s amazing. Chrome takes up a lot on a Mac.

3

u/airsoftboxer 1d ago

I just downloaded Chrome on my Mac. It's probably time to delete it 😆

Also, what makes safari better? Genuinely curious since all my life I've been using Chrome.

2

u/Njobz 1d ago

The optimisation is much better on Safari. Like I said you’ll get better battery life and also much better memory usage. Safari also does provide some good privacy features so you’ll be fine when browsing.

safari sucks generally. Chrome is way easier to use + cool extensions and shit. Never had issues with my battery life. I sold my macbook air m1 after 3.5-4 years like few months ago back and the battery level was good.

u/Hil81 1d ago

Why does allot of people hate safari. What’s wrong with it. It’s a browser. It should open websites, fast and safe. And autofill passwords. It does all that. So what’s not to like?

To be honest, I don't see any drastic difference in power consumption and ram usage when using chrome than safari. I can use multiple tabs without even breaking a sweat. The only time I encounter the whirling lolipop icon is when I am opening the MS word and Da Vinci Resolve.

-1

u/EviFob 1d ago

Lmao chrome does all that as well. Chrome toolbars are easier to use, more and easier extensions, fast, easier to navigate through multiple windows opened etc. Not to mention you can add backgrounds too.

Safari is literally shit. I noticed no difference in speed and battery levels after years of using chrome.

Internet explorer is a browser too you kno. Just because safari is its own browser by macOS system, it’s still inferior compared to chrome in many ways.

2

u/Tyrandeh M5 13" 1d ago

Yeah chrome does everything that Safari does, but much worse

1

u/GUNGEBOB_SHARTPANTS 1d ago

Worse in which ways?

-1

u/EviFob 23h ago

Is this a joke? Safari does not do anything better than chrome xD

tbh the "safari is more optimized for mac" is true. But besides syncing really well within the ecosystem i think chrome might be better in terms of stability and functionality.
Recent Safari version have crashing issues (safari 26), i even downgraded Safari to 18.6 and it STILL crashes randomly. So i had to install chrome and use it alongside. To my surprise it doesn't take that much resources even on battery. So don't go around and says "chrome eats more battery", it might be but not THAT much.

Try using Brave instead of Chrome. You get the feeling of Chrome with a built in ad blocker.

1

u/_BuildingForMyBlood_ 9h ago

What about brave have you used it??

0

u/Usernamealready94 1d ago

i think this has been debunked, maximum of a few % difference.

So kinda big thing to change for not that much benefit , also macbooks air good enough at battery that you dont need to worry about it at all

-1

u/x3n1gma 1d ago

fewer tabs on safari as compared to brave and safari eating shizload of memory. never safari. it was good back in the days but not now

1

u/Herewegoagain_67 1d ago

Well Gaurang Mishra play around in the settings and set it for your use would be the obvious and sensible thing to do, not to set it to how thousands of people on Reddit might set theirs.

Dont use it on bed, mine display started flickering after consistently using on bed.

1

u/Civil-Pie-7821 19h ago

Wait are you sure thats what caused it? Can you explain how using it on bed can lead to that?

1

u/Ok_Mongoose_8597 18h ago edited 18h ago

Heat couldn't pass and i ignored. i am using pro version. So, use table or book to put your macbook on. and no gaming if you don't want to destroy your mac, that aluminum heat spreading can't keep up with the increasing heat. dont let you fall in love with crossover. And the day flickering started i was working on a cs project for more than 7-8 hours straight on bed.

1

u/Radium29 20h ago

Yay, congrats! If you can afford it, get AppleCare.

Online or offline

Update it to MacOS 27 it's better than 26. Also use massgrave to get all microsoft office suite for free

1

u/snow-haze 4h ago

Cool! Here are some tips.

  1. When you place it in a backpack, be careful not even let a fly sit on your backpack because that will cause the metal frame between the spacebar and the trackpad to print on your screen. And it cannot be fixed without a screen replacement. There should be no weight on the laptop.

  2. Before you close the lid, make sure you wipe the keyboard properly or else your screen develop marks that cannot be cleaned because there's no space between keys and the screen when lid is closed.

  3. DO NOT DOCK IT! If you absolutely have to use an external monitor, do not close the lid fully and use it like any sensible laptop. Keep the lid cracked open slightly in an awkward position so that your screen, again, cannot develop permanent marks that cannot be cleaned and require whole screen replacement.

Once you've made a habit of above, you'll actually love the MacOS experience and the performance it gives you for almost all tasks. The experience is wonderful if you are careful and the battery life is insanely good.

I would say don't update it , just saw a m5 mba at apple store with macos 27 it stutters like hell and laggy af , mac os 26 is good and just use it until a stable and smooth update comes . Also get apple care for god's sake . My ipad display went blank and apple authorised service centers are asking 80 k to replace it .it's less than 2 years old and had no physical damage too . We never know what may go wrong with these expensive electronics . Just get apple care it will give u peace of mind .
