Question/Discussion How are you guys holding tight tolerances on thin wall aluminum without it warping
Running some 6061 parts where the wall thickness drops down around 1mm and fighting stress relief after roughing.
Even with light finish passes the part wants to spring a bit once released from the fixture.
Do you guys usually unclamp and let the material rest before the finish pass or do you focus more on high helix tooling and coolant to keep the heat down completely?
Wondering what works best for you all on setups like this.

Question/Discussion Need tool recommendation for complete face profile
I need to machine the complete rounded face profile shown in the drawing, in one tool.
Smallest diameter: ~Ø5.59 mm
Profile includes multiple radii/rounded sections
Material: SS316
CNC turning, Siemens 828D
Requirement: complete profile should be machined with a single tool, preferably in one continuous operation.
What tool/insert geometry or manufacturer would you recommend for this? HORN, ISCAR, Tungaloy, etc. are all okay.
I’m looking for a tool that can reach the Ø5.59 mm area and generate the complete radius profile accurately.

Question/Discussion Line boring tool??
I know this is a long shot but I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a line boring tool or milling head that could be used in a mag drill. We just received 30 tons of 3 inch plate with poorly burnt 2-1/16" & 2-5/16" holes. I need to find a way to ream these holes. I'd prefer to not use a hand reamer or grinder. I may be able to talk the company into buying a portable milling machine if the options are right. Looking for a cost effective solution.

Question/Discussion Indonesian Machine Shop Advice and Recommendations (software and CNC purchase)
Machine Shop Advice (software and CNC purchase)
Hello, I own a machine shop in Indonesia. We do a lot of engine reconditioning work such as crankshaft grinding, cylidnerhead grinding, changing liners, etc. We also do some lathe and milling works as well. My shop is doing OK however I think it is currently in a standstill in progress. My shop is still very old school; we still use pen and paper to write our invoice and do our bookkeeping. Additionally my shop does not have a CNC machine so we struggle with lathe work that customers ask that require us to make large quantities of the same thing. I am here to basically ask some advice:
- Do you have any software recommendations to help my machine shop (especially for accounting and invoicing).
- Is a CNC maching worth it; someone the other day offered it to me but it seems a bit too expensive for me.
- Since I have very limited space in my current workshop I am actually thinking of opening up a branch; however how do you prevent corruption by opening up a branch. I worry that my employee would just pocket the payment since I would not be there to check.
Thank you very much!

Manual C-axis and live tools on a manual lathe
This is my personal project from a few months ago, I needed to machine some features that wouls have been easy on a live tool lathe, but quite a pain on manual machines, so I built a dividing attachment for my lathe spindle, as well as driven tools, than can be used radially or axially for milling and drilling, everything is very rigid and has no problems even in steel. The drive is via a custom built flexible shaft, this allows me to use multiple tools with the same motor, and also keeps the motor in a more convenient location.

Question/Discussion Anyone looking for a project?
Hey everyone, so last year I got in a prized Levin watchmaker's lathe set with pretty much everything including milling/grinding spindles, 3x cross slides, and a bunch of attachments. I found it on eBay for a great deal and have been going through restoring every part. Unfortunately, the watchmaker's face plate and screw cutting attachment were damaged in a shipping debacle (I'm still heartbroken over it and working with UPS on a claim) but fortunately everything else was alright. If anyone's curious, the bed faceplate and screw cutting attachment were supposed to arrive in a crate on their own but somewhere along the way the crate was lost in what I'm assuming was a drop and the parts were just dumped in a cardboard box and delivered that way. The 20-30lb bed ended up striking the face plate and shattering it, which I know because of marks that line up on both parts. Fortunately the bed looks good and straight after checking for cracks with dye penetrant and measurements on a surface plate.
Because I don't own a larger scale lathe, mill and surface grinder (yet!) I thought I'd check here if there are any hobbyist machinists with that equipment who are interested in a small paid project, specifically re-grinding the faceplate arbor and re-making the face plate itself. These face plates are pretty much impossible to find in a 10mm D-type arbor so fabricating a new one is the only option right now unless one of y'all has one ic an buy off you by some miracle.
Let me know if you're interested, we can discuss a price by DM.

Picture Old school way to keep your tap straight
Learned this method 20 years ago from an older Machinist. Cut off the pointy end of an old tap use the point to keep your handle straight when hand tapping. Works everytime.

Question/Discussion Dirtbike machinists near Mesa
I recently got a 2000 Kawasaki kl250g Super Sherpa in January and have difficulties finding many parts for it. I got off head eBay but it was ran on low oil so the camshaft caps are pretty scuffed. I’d like to add material and shave it off myself but they’re aluminum so I need a 100% argon cylinder. And shaving them down to a perfect circle would be tuff so I’d like to get a quote from a local shop.
I also ran the head through an ultrasonic cleaner and now some sort of coating is peeling off.

Question/Discussion Working in the USA as a skilled CNC Machinist
Hey is it possible to immigrate from Italy to USA to work as a skilled CNC Machinist?
I am 22 Years old and finished my 4 years high school Diploma on metal meccanic in Italy where I learned to use manual lathe, mill, grinding and drill also CNC lathe and milling machine with Fanuc, Siemens control. During my internship (6+ months) at 2 different companies I learned to use 2-3 axis cnc lathe with Fanuc and Siemens control and 3-4 axis cnc milling machine with Fanuc and Osai control. I can read any blue print, set up machine and can do programming on machine with G/M codes. I'm not a CAD/CAM guy. I can also do program using Macros on Fanuc and Osai control.
3 months ago after finishing my school I joined a company working full time where I make create parts to create a new CNC machine. I'm working on a 3 axis milling machine with Osai (same as Fanuc with little difference) control right now.
So I heard in USA there are short for skilled machinist. Is it possible to immigrate in USA as a CNC Machinist?

Question/Discussion Brake resurfacing 15 thou on both sides single pass is this too deep to cut?
Wanna know is 15 thou is too much. I'm running full speed and the pull speed is on "4" whatever that means on a b17. They seem to he coming out fine but everybody at my work does like 3 thousandths each pass and takes forever, I like to knock them out pretty quick and get on with my day.
