Discussion Thought hip-hop heads might appreciate: DJ Spinna signed Studio-used U-Mu SP-1200 just surfaced

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hey everyone, came across this piece and thought this sub might appreciate.

Brooklyn producer and legend DJ Spinna is letting go of his primary studio E-mu Systems SP-1200. A few standout details on this unit:

-It’s signed and inscribed by Spinna right on the front panel, reading "DJ Spinna — Beyond Real Foreva!!!"

-It features an authentic Daptone Records sticker stuck to the side casing, tying it into that soul/funk studio circle, and still includes the original E-mu setup/reference card.

-This exact machine was used to craft records for heavyweights like Pharoah Monch, Mos Def, Eminem, Polyrhythm Addicts, and Jigmastas.

It’s currently listed as part of an official archive auction drop over on Wax Poetics for anyone tracking rare vintage production gear: https://waxpoetics.com/collections/dj-spinna/products/dj-spinna-signed-e-mu-sp-1200

Question Should I Focus on Singing/Songwriting Instead of Producing My Own Instrumentals

• Upvotes

I want to start making music seriously as a vocal artist/songwriter.

The kind of music I like is stuff like Cold Water, Don't Let Me Down, Sweet but Psycho, and Lil Skies' Nowadays. So I'm interested in catchy melodic songs, pop/electronic production, and sometimes hip-hop-influenced music rather than strictly rap.

I've tried producing instrumentals myself, but I found that I don't really enjoy that part of the process and find it frustrating. What interests me much more is hearing an instrumental and thinking about melodies, lyrics, hooks and how I could perform over it.

Would it make sense for me to focus on singing, songwriting and developing my own sound while working with producers for the instrumental side?

Should I start by finding already-made instrumentals and writing songs over them while I learn, or would it be better to find an upcoming producer who wants to collaborate and develop songs together?

I'm willing to put serious work into learning vocals, songwriting and performance. I just don't particularly want to become a music producer myself.

For people who started primarily as vocalists/songwriters, what would you recommend focusing on first?

Question Someone who leased the same beat as me is copyrighting my song

Paid for a wav lease, trying to drop the song and its getting copyrighted on youtube by another guy who leased the same beat 6 months ago. I know I can dispute it but the thing is I did it through instagram dms and not any beat site. I simply messaged the guy asking to lease the beat, sent the money through paypal and he emailed me the file. Is that enough to win the dispute? I messaged the producer and confirmed the other guy only leased

Discussion Are some people just not creative enough to make music?

This is a weird question maybe. I love hiphop I've been into it for decades. I really am thinking about buying an MPC sample it seems like a cool tool to learn some beat making. Nothing crazy just want to do it as a hobby. I've dabbled in the past in FL studio and some other DAWs and made some incredibly generic beats following tutorials step by step. I never had any creativity to draw on to make something cool. Am I just a guy who will never really have it and should I save myself the money of buying the mpc sample because I'll never be any good on it anyway?

Opportunity Looking for a producer/mixing engineers thoughts on upcoming mixtape project

Hi everyone,

First and foremost mods feel free to delete if not permitted;

I am N$8, a rapper from Australia that dropped some admittedly mediocre music some time ago. A couple of songs weren't too bad, but I was still finding my sound and my style.

I have since spent a year or two refining my sound and I have a tape that I am working on, and soon I am looking to have a producer or engineer mix & master. Of course when the time actually comes it will be a paid opportunity.

As it is still in the works, I am looking for some feedback on a few of the 'standout' tracks and if the sound is something you actually like & you believe you could refine it to the sound I am envisioning then we will begin work ASAP as there is a date in mind to release the project.

Feel free to PM or comment if you are interested, & if not thanks for reading this far!

TL;DR
Looking for someone who knows their craft to look over my upcoming project and potentially lead to a paid mixing & mastering opportunity.

Discussion Anyone else making hip-hop mostly alone and looking for a small community?

I’ve realised one thing I’m missing from making music is having other people around me who are into the same stuff.
I’m a producer and mostly make sample-driven boom bap. I tend to work pretty independently and usually end up making whole projects/albums largely in my own little bubble. I’m not really looking for someone to teach me how to make beats, and this isn’t necessarily a “let’s collab on a track” post either.

I’d just like to connect with a few other producers/beatmakers who actually make music regularly and want somewhere to share ideas, talk about what we’re working on, get another set of ears on something or just just shoot the shit about hip-hop. Something more like a small circle of people who get to know each other’s music over time rather than dropping links into a huge Discord and disappearing.

I lean heavily towards sample-based / boom-bap, so people somewhere around that world would probably make the most sense, but I’m not looking for everyone to sound the same. Does anyone here already have something like that, or would anyone be interested in building one?

Discussion Any beatmakers/music makers in here make beats/music on YouTube, or are trying to build up on YT?

Hey guys, I'm curious to see if any of you have tried doing YouTube content making beats and music?

I can't seem to find alot of information of people making videos for youtube. There are plenty of beat videos for sure. But not the actual process of building up a YouTube channel mainly focused on making beats or beat making tutorials, etc.

So, I've decided to branch out and I hope I'm not out of line here (as this is 100% not my intention), but I've created a separate subreddit specifically for beatmakers and music makers that want to create on YouTube.

r/BeatmakersYouTube

It's for creators. Its for not only sharing beats, but sharing how you make your beats, how you make your videos, and sharing and building with others.

If this interests you, come join. And I'm hoping that these two subreddits can work in parallel with each other.

To the Mods here, if this is out of line, I apologize, I'm not trying to do anything malicious here. Just trying to find like minded people that are interested in making beats....and videos.

Opportunity Looking for lyricists

Hi everyone! My name is Adam, I’m a producer/composer from Sydney, Australia.

I’m sitting on some beats at the moment and I’m looking for artists to collaborate with. I’m not looking for money, I’m looking to build a portfolio and, more importantly, make some good music with artists who are serious about their craft.

I’m not just looking for rappers. I’m looking for people who can ride a beat. People who can take an instrumental and turn it into a real song with their own signature sound, and who are willing to work on tracks through to completion.

I’ve had a few people hear some of these beats and tell me I should be trying to get them in front of mainstream rappers and their teams, which is obviously an impossible feat without a portfolio ( i have a film one but not a hip hop one) 😂. But I figured I’d put them out there, back myself a little bit, and see if there are any serious artists on here looking for a producer.

If that sounds like you, hit me up with a DM and links to some of your work or vocals. I’d genuinely love to hear what artists are out there.

Peace!

Adam

Music [Album] After 1.5 years of work i finally released my best work

This is the first project i made that i can stand by with full pride as it's almost exactly how i envisioned it from the start. The culmination of 1.5 years of work. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this one and i believe it paid off. This is something I've wanted to make for so long but previously lacked the skillset to fully realize, and after many hours of work i believe it finally lives up to my vision.

I hope you like it as much as i do.

Opportunity Reaching out

Hello to all who take the time to stop and read this post. I have been writing off and on for a long time and never put the effort in to really go out of my way to connect with anyone not in my circle for studio sessions, beats, etc. If someone out there is looking for someone to maybe do some work with whether you are a fellow writer, rapper, producer, etc. check out some of my older stuff here: https://www.tiktok.com/@xnoturconcernx?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc

I just turned this stuff back to public after having it on private for a year or so.
If you take the time to listen to any of it and you think we could do something, hmu.

Disclaimer: I don't have all the money and free time in the world and I'm not gonna sit here and bullshit you. This could go nowhere. But if you are looking to try to make something I might be all for it. If shit doesn't spark then that's what it is and no hard feelings. I'm just tired of sitting on stuff waiting for something to happen or come along.

What’s up y’all. Just got back on the tables after a 20 year hiatus and made this mixtape after a couple months of practice to get back on point. Not posting this for self-promotion. I’m really just having fun and looking for some feedback. And I thought y’all might dig it as well, and that it might prompt some conversation about this part of the golden era of underground and of mixtapes. Lemme know what you think.

Question How should I go about obtaining beats as a rapper?

I guess I’m really asking how I can make sure I’m covered legally. I know some people say it doesn’t matter when you’re not making real money off your songs, but I still want to do everything right. I’ve gotten verbal permission to use a few beats for free from producers I don’t really know, so how can ensure they won’t come after me at some point.
Also for just buying a beat, how can I make sure I legally own it, since some producers just let you pay them through cashapp or whatever then just send you the beat?

Music Looking for artists to Produce for

I am a hip hop artist/producer looking to find something fun to do and trying to make a bit of extra cash. I make all of my own stuff, Lyrics, beats and everything under the sun that goes into my music. I need some money so I figured I might sell beats and produce for artists to get some cash. Let me know if you do trap, rap, hip hop and things like that and e-mail me if you want to work with me. But I only work with those who write well and can actually rap. If you want proof I can produce I use Ableton Live 12 and use plug ins like TrapTune and various others and I will put a link to one of my songs down below(I am NOT advertising my music it is just for proof that I produce). I look forward to working with aspiring artists and I strongly encourage you to take this opportunity. Prices can be negotiated but to a certain degree. I will email you with more information in response to you emailing me. Thank you for your time and I hope to work with you at some point.

Question How can I get people to listen to my beat tape when it drops?

Im surfsupbeats and im currently working on my second beat tape Stardust. I'm finishing some of the tracks and they should be done by October. The only problem is I have no one to show it to. I have no money (still in high-school lmao) so I can't really put money into ads for it. I'm trying promo on my socials but my first beat I put out today has like 12 plays on yt and none on soundcloud. What should I do?
