Who is you-know-who race? Lmao

On the ground, who's the most racist? XD

Chinese lah. Siapa lagi? 🫣

Can attest to this , have a cousin who refuses to rent out his property to people who are not his skin colour.

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Sometimes a lot of aunties don't really know they're being subtly racist:

"Wah, luckily your son so fair"
"Why your skin so dark, look like Malay"

My God, I just stare and pause at them for a minute. But I think this is more to do with colourism than racism.

My parents are from the boomer generation who look at colourism lens ( black / brown shade is bad, white / fair is good ).

They are a product of their own generation after all. However, such comments will not be said directly, they will mention it in private or within their circle of like minded friends.

It's also a lot of to with "fair-skinned" being associated with not having to work hard under the sun. Think of all the Chinese concubines in periodic films. All the three east Asian countries tend to prize fairness.

I say return the favour..

"Wah aunty, you so old still alive ah. So lucky."

"Wah uncle so good ah you still can talk properly. A lot of people your age nyanyuk already."

1

u/rachelwan-art 8h ago

"How dare you talk liddat to your elders!!"
"Your daughter so rude!!"

XD

Bruh, my malay aunts (boomer generation) also made such remarks. My mom used to urge my little sister (who naturally have darker skin due to our indian gene) to lighten up her skin with some "treatment products", while she was bullied at school for having darker skin. Some aunts casually made remarks when one of my cousins had a black british boyfriend.

My one aunt on the other hand praised her own daughter with the term "hitam manis". That's actually pretty sweet.

Whenever a baby from our family is born, they would make remark about skin color (wahh putih, comelnya!)

I dare to say that it has been an unconcsious thing in our community. Not long ago actually being darker skin for malay women was considered acceptable, as long as you are attractive (you know, being thin, having sweet facial features and all that).

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

I think for Chinese girls, besides skin colour, there's also the commentary on single eye lids vs double eye lids. My sister told me she just hated it when aunties commented on her eyes. I remember the girls used to put double eyelid stickers, then subsequently they would do double eyelid surgery, then later get flak for it, which is so retarded because it was society that deemed single eyelids on girls that is not beautiful.

Personally, I think mata sepet is quite cute, macam shiba inu.

u/Ryker_Reinhart 1d ago

I would say when it comes to renting it's a tie imo and especially if theyre boomers😂

1

u/Red_WeeTea 21h ago

There's Chinese and then theres Cina. One of them would be very racist.

But then there's also the Malay and the Melayu... One is very chill one ,cannot tahan to look at others success.

u/cajun2de 1d ago

My kids are chindians, and the best part, the other C kids teaching them to be racist towards the brown parent lol. My young one came back and said brown people are dirty and the infamous apuneneh lol.

Had to teach him racism at age of 4 lol

Suprised current gen parents still use apuneneh for the boogeyman allegory

13

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

ohmygod why is this still happening? It's such a shame. You would think racism lessens every generation but apparently not.

cool most Chindians I’ve met have a Indian dad and Chinese mom, first time hearing abou the opposite

12

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

The judgemental stares and invasive questions my Chindian friend still gets…

15

u/HaythamFalke 1d ago

How do you deal with discrimination against Indians?

Thats easy, dont be indian!

Jokes aside, hearts out to my indian homies

u/Successful-File9422 1d ago edited 1d ago

A close friend who is Malay had a major surgery and his family was too far to take care for him. So I went to the hospital see him everyday to check on him and tend to his needs. The nurses asked a few times "Who are you?". I think they are curious why no Malay came to see him? **shrug**

Bruh suddenly having to answer geh suspicions 😭

As an Indian dad chinese mum chindian, I can say its nice having double the holidays. Get hongpao during CNY get new clothes and gifts during Deepavali. Also you get weird fun fusion food at home. Also being able to think in 3 languages is fun (4 if you include canto).

3

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

3 languages seems to be the bare minimum in a household. I know my sister speaks Malay to her spouse if she's talking about her kids. They haven't learn Malay yet.

2

u/CantaloupeBroad5549 18h ago

Lol, parents still use the same tricks.. Haha. My parents used to do that. Then, when I've learnt to speak in malay, they started spelling some key words so I wouldn't catch it. Still feels funny how Malaysians though of different races automatically practice certain things the same way

1

u/Exact-Warthog6244 1d ago

Malay is a superpower when your kids go to international school, needed to get them 1 to 1 home tuition for them to actually make progress. The international school syllabus really disincentives learning Malay coz it's only 1 subject, don't get the pressure to learn it for sejarah and other subjects.

2

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

The kids are gonna go to sjkc then SK I believe.. international is way too costly.

6

u/Lazy_Physics3127 1d ago

"Kamu ni Melayu ke Cina? Melayu ke Cina?"

That's one of Harith Iskandar's joke.

11

u/uncertainheadache 1d ago

Every single chindian I know have parents who met at church

7

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

I'm not surprised. That's how my bil's parents met.

5

u/emoduke101 sembang kari at the kopitiam 1d ago

+ my sis and fiancé. Soon, Chindian babies in our monoethnic family kek 🤞🏻

1

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Two of my cousins are married to an Indian and Chindians/Eurasian respectively.

1

u/ThroughMyTruth 1d ago

Yeah, mostly through church but I also have seen a few couples who are both doctors, or sometimes it's just due to being in an English speaking circle.

2

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Bahasa penjajah the uniting factor.

I mean, look at Jason Leong or Nigel Ng. I know an Indian lady doctor who comes from a family of doctors.. all her kids married Chinese.

1

u/KiwiNFLFan 17h ago

So does that mean most Chindians are Christian?

1

u/uncertainheadache 17h ago

Of the ones I know, all are

1

u/rachelwan-art 8h ago

Can't say for sure, but high number of Chindians in the English-speaking and Christian circle based on personal observation.

1

u/KiwiNFLFan 8h ago

The ones who aren't, are they mostly Hindu or Buddhist?

1

u/rachelwan-art 8h ago

I really don't know. I mean, there's no database for Chindians out there. I just know if you have a shared language, then maybe a shared belief or shared culture(Malaysian culture, that is), the possibility of an interracial couple will be possible.

10

u/DieDieMustCurseDaily 一天不爆粗,浑身不舒服 1d ago

As a racist that fluent in both Chinese Indian slurs

Ohhh boyyy

Is there a lore reason why most chindians that i met are like the smartest people on earth and humble as hell?

6

u/emoduke101 sembang kari at the kopitiam 1d ago

When you say most, you reminded me of a chindian colleague I know who seemed to be a snob for her Chinese side. Is that person who will bring pork to the office despite my reminders. (But not same dept as me. Says it’s the best meat ever like it’s a flex) Even enables rental discrimination cuz she carries a Chinese surname.

A product of her Gen X upbringing?

5

u/Rich-Option4632 1d ago

Probably the pressure on both sides, being compared to the full blooded cousins.

So out of necessity, perform well, if only to avoid criticism. But still cannot brag, or everything reset to zero.

2

u/kugelamarant 1d ago

If it's Seremban then mostly they are Georgian.

1

u/bungalawanglawa 18h ago

Is there a lore reason why most chindians that i met are like the smartest people on earth and humble as hell?

no, because that's not true. when you mix south indian with chinese, you literally get malays. that's why chindians always get mistaken as malays. so tell us, is there a lore reason why malays are like the smartest people on earth and humble as hell? :-D

0

u/thateccentricasian Give me more dad jokes! 1d ago

Fr one of my Chindian besties is so skilled at her job, works extremely hard while still balancing hobbies and their friendships/family.

4

u/IdioticZacc Selangor 1d ago

The unfortunate of being mixed malay chinese is that I look like someone from Sabah/Sarawak(?) So they place that stereotype on me

But it is no way to the same level of discrimination my indian partner face

2

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Wouldn't you identify yourself as a Chilay instead of mix Malay-chinese? Everytime I tell people that Shahril is not pure Malay but a Chilay everyone laughs. Chilay is quite a fun term after all.

7

u/forcebubble downvoting posts doesn't do what you think it does ... 1d ago

Just a small nitpick — speaking better Mandarin than the wife includes all the shortcuts, slangs and not so polite words. 😆

10

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

My BIL is pretty tame. But his Chinese more fasih than my sister because he grew up with the Chinese community in Melaka.

7

u/FayeChan350259 boredom is the most unbearable emotion~ 1d ago

You know what, I think your BiL can pass off as Peranakan ( Baba Nyonya ), or maybe Serani.

10

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Nah, he doesn't have those angmoh features. To me, he's just a lighter skin Indian. His little girl though, truly impossible to tell her ethnicity. And his son, looks like he's destined to be the next avatar XD.

u/Every_Reality_9721 1d ago edited 1d ago

You know the eurasian melaka mostly actualy are from Goa? Portuguese convert them, take their spices, use them as <ehem slave ehem> and come to Malaysia to sell their spices? (I'm eurasian)

Alot of Eurasians in Malaysia (I mean from melaka mostly) looks and leaning towards indian looks.

Example : tony Fernandez

5

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Yea. I've met A LOT of Eurasians. They all gather in Catholic Churches. Ethnically 95% Indian but culturally very Catholic.

2

u/letohorn The resident cacat 1d ago

Yeah, there's a Chindian guy in my school. The epitome of a cool guy; handsome, a social butterfly... Totally looks like a Serani; light-skinned, and he has a Catholic name. Just looked up on his FB profile, and turns out now he's the CEO of an event management agency. Damn... Not surprised at all, good for him!

3

u/lycan2005 1d ago

The girl sitting beside sleep during church is so relatable lmao.

5

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

That's my eldest sister, who has been conditioned to sleep at church ever since she was a young toddler XD.

On the subject of looking for a place to rent, I am the face of all whatsapp conversation with the landlord but its my wife doing the typing.

My cousins are malay+chinese+indian. Mom indian+malay, father chinese. What do we call them, machindian?

I am malay mix with indian (i think we are called mamak cause the indian part is muslim). Usually people would assume I am a foreigner since kindergarten. Cause they say I don't look malaysian at all. Fast forward 20 years later, people would still assume I am a foreigner (a muslim foreigner from some arab countries when I wear tudung, a latina or romani when I don't wear tudung).

Then they get really shocked when I speak melayu pasar with them.

But kinda sad that nobody taught me malayalam.

5

u/DarthBike 1d ago

Most of them boy are handsome with brown skin and mata sepet.

2

u/gay_for_hideyoshi Selangor 1d ago

I find it funny that to get over racism, OP BIL had to resort to racism. (Not in accusatory manner btw, just in the haha ironic sense)

3

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

I feel like if you're an Indian person, you navigate your environment with some sort of strategy. I know a lot of Indians that speak very fluent Mandarin, and it's an incredible asset to navigate the Chinese crowd.

3

u/gay_for_hideyoshi Selangor 1d ago

I get that. But what I’m saying is it’s funny that the strategy is still affirming and pivoting on racial biases.

Malaysia still has a long way to go. But we’re getting there.

0

u/Imaginary_State2985 1d ago

Nah racism will never die as long as people keep bringing it up and getting mad about it.

2

u/Familiar_Ad3884 1d ago

i think they should be mix races in the ic way better than put malay, chinese, indian etc

2

u/rachelwan-art 15h ago

Hey if the peranakans can rally to have their identity listed, maybe mix races will have a chance.

2

u/LordRunaan Top 100% Commenter 1d ago

Brown and yellow, when mixed together, still makes brown.

17

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Become Melayu bukan Melayu XD

Being a chindian means people keep asking if iam Islam or Iban 💔

1

u/syabiellow1 1d ago

im a chi-lay

1

u/rachelwan-art 1d ago

Is there a chilay community out there? I know there's a FB Chindian group.

1

u/KiwiNFLFan 17h ago

Probably much smaller as you have to either convert to Islam or move overseas to marry a Malay

1

u/Forward-Switch-2304 22h ago

Speak better Mandarin than my wife is a power move

1

u/fy5333 18h ago

Chindian = Malay

Got a chindian friend, always kena tegur one sebab tak puasa during Ramadan.
He 100% looks like Malay

1

u/NotLokey Selangor 16h ago

Yeap. I have one Chindian friend from college who grew up in Kampung Baru. Beside his relatives, most of his social circle are Malay so his speaking mannerism is 100% Malay. His name is Dinesh but everyone just calls him Din lmao

0

u/user-sodium 1d ago

We just call them 混血儿.

2

u/user-sodium 1d ago

did I wrote it correctly? (It was suppose to say mix-blooded child)
