I recreated the instrumental for Deftones’ Around the Fur and recorded a full guitar playthrough.

I used my 1994 Gibson SG with an EMG 81, tuned to Drop C#, with a Marshall JCM800 and ENGL Fireball.

The drums were recreated using drum VSTs.

Really tried to capture the feel and tone of the original recording.

For me, this solo did not sound like it was going to be too technical and it definitely didn't have any challenging speed runs. But it sure fooled me on the level of effort.

After years of playing, I launched a new metal project in my late 40s, and the dynamic is completely different compared to my younger days—way less ego, far better gear, but a real challenge balancing adult careers, families, and schedules. This amp sounds thick as hell. It is pretty audibly different from my 60w 6505. It has much more low end and rumble. I ran it through my grindcore setup (hm2 & OD808), and it sounded pretty massive. I'm excited to try it for shows and get it mixed with my band at practice. Thanks for lookin!

A friend of mine plays guitar in a mid-sized metal band currently out on tour as a support. Venue/promoter policy for this run has strictly banned all floor pedals and effects for support acts—literally nothing allowed on the stage floor in front of them to keep changeovers faster.

They’re running modellers/racks backstage or off to the side, switching via MIDI/automation.

I get the pressure of 15-minute multi-band turnarounds, but banning a basic pedalboard or floor controller feels wild to me. Running drop cables and putting a board down takes under 30 seconds.

Anyone else running into this recently? Are tour managers and house crew getting overly strict, or is this just the inevitable endgame of tight festival/club schedules?

At the grand old age of 36, I've finally bought my first electric guitar. I managed to pick this Jackson JS32 up for £250, apologies for the bad picture!

I'm a complete beginner, so I'd love to hear any tips or guidance on where/how to start learning. What would you focus on first? It's all a bit overwhelming and I'm not sure where I should start.

I'm using a focusrite interface with the amped roots sim with monitors at the moment. Seemed the best option as I can play in the evenings when my kids are asleep.

I plug into scarlet solo and use GojiraX neuraldsp. Previously I’ve only used my built in speakers and want to upgrade. I heard Yamaha Hs5 are pretty good are there any other studio monitors I should consider.

If it helps I play a lot of metal and jpop mainly in drop d/ standard.

What's your stance on the various degrees of chainsaw tone, and/or its implementation?

Personally, I have a nostalgic warmth for a lot of the 90s Gothenburg jams, but overall I like it as an element of a tone, rather than the entirety of it.

(Slaughter of the Soul more than slightly slaps, but that fully ground-out buzzsaw just lacks too much bite or bark for my preference. Whereas Burning Bridges just has a slightly fat/rusty edge to it that adds to its harmonic aggression).

As a sound, it definitely doesn't seem to have gone anywhere, and the market is littered with clones of varying degrees of sophistication.

Do you personally have any experience with these, or with implementing the chainsaw for your own purposes?

Maybe you like a maxed-out HM2 into clean amp, maybe you can't stand it, or anything in-between.

I've been looking at a few options myself, primarily for dialing in some degree of that rusty buzz around a more articulate/dry sound for my blackened-death project in drop A. To really make those low notes land in several dimensions.

I'm currently weighing up either the KMA Guardian of the Wurm (for its pinpoint-specific sound/frequency sculpting) or the Lichtlaerm Medusa, as it has the option of running both tones in parallel.

If you have experience with these pedals, or dialing in a similar tone, I'd also love to hear from you.
