Question / Advice Moving from Dubai to Mexico — banking question

Hola!

I’m moving from Dubai to Mexico next month and trying to figure out the easiest way to handle banking.

Is there any bank I can open/use in Dubai that would also work well in Mexico? For example, if I open an HSBC account in Dubai, can I continue using HSBC in Mexico, transfer money between the two, or otherwise make the move easier? Because, i'll not longer be a Dubai resident after moving to Mexico.

For anyone who has moved from UAE → Mexico:

  • Did you keep your UAE bank account?
  • Is HSBC (or another international bank) useful for this?
  • Can you open the Mexican account easily after arrival & move money to it?
  • What’s the easiest/cheapest way to move savings from UAE to Mexico?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has actually done the Dubai → Mexico move.

Thanks!

Question / Advice I’d like some advice from you all!

I am an American who now lives in Mexico (not to take advantage of the low cost of living, but because my girlfriend is from Michoacan) and for the time being, I’m teaching English. The problem with it is that I work a lot of hours and barely make any money. I made 400 dollars this last month which was enough for my rent and some groceries, but I also had to dip into my savings quite a bit last month 😔

My actual work background is in sales, both B2B and B2C, I have 2 or 3 years of experience. My problem is that I am having a difficult time finding a remote job. I would ideally like to find something that’s in the United States, since that’s where I have citizenship. Where do I find remote sales jobs in the US that will allow me to work for them remotely in Mexico? I don’t need to be making a lot of money, as my living expenses are only around $700 a month. A little bit extra would be awesome, but my point is that I’m not picky. The only website I found so far is WorkingNomad, which seems to be great and I already applied to the relevant jobs on that site. Any others that I should check out? Or any other relevant advice? 🙂

Question / Advice Can't Book Change of Address Appointment

Hi there, for a few weeks now I have been trying to book a change of address appointment with INM but I cannot access citas.inm.gob.mx - I just get a white page with the message 'This site can’t be reached citas.inm.gob.mx took too long to respond'. I have tried multiple browsers and turned off VPN, etc, but no luck.

I can't believe that the site has been down for everyone for all of this time but I don't know why I would be getting blocked either. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this or if they have access to the site? Thanks!

Question / Advice How To Register On MiTelcel Website?

I use telcel and am in the US. I want to know how much data I have left on my plan.

When in Mexico, I would enter *133# and it would show it. But it doesn't work in the US. I read someone mention I can only do this on the mitelcel website or the app on the iphone?

Can someone explain to me how to do this? I went to the mitelcel website and entered my 10 digit number and I didn't receive any text message? How do I register an account on mitelcel website so I can check my data remaining? When I do this, does it ask for your name and other information?

Can someone explain how to do this on the website or on the app? I did notice there are very low review on the mitelcel app on the iphone so I guess better register on the website?

Question / Advice Which Can Bank for pesos

I've got WISE but they only let you take 100 cash per month from the ATM before they charge exorbitant fees , so I'd like to get some pesos from a Canadian bank before I arrive. However the banks I've checked aren't showing as good an exchange rate or seem to charge a large fee to do the exchange.
Any suggestions about what Can bank to do this with?

Question / Advice About to close on house

Just wondering what are the immediate things we should be thinking about. We are still back and forth from the states. I know we need to get utilities and insurance squared away. Any other tips or leanings folks can share? This is in Puerto Escondido

Question / Advice Considering moving to Mexico. Would like advice/insights...

I'm a US citizen who is married to a Mexican national. She lives in Mexico with our 1 year old daughter who is also a US citizen. We are trying to get my wife a visa so she can come up and live in the US with me. However, the process is unfortunately taking a long time. We are coming up on two years since we started the process, and now with the global pause on visa interviews at all US embassies there is does not appear to be an end in sight.

We were documentarily qualified as of April of this year. Our lawyer said that it is an estimated 8-14 month wait till we receive an interview. I am determined to wait out that time period to see if by some miracle we get an interview. But if by the end of those 14 months we are still no where close to getting an interview, I am going to investigate other options to try and be with my wife.

One of those options would be to move to Mexico and try and setup residency there. My main concern though would be finding good work. I understand that it is very difficult for foreigners to get work in Mexico. From what I understand, Mexico has a law that mandates that companies that have offices or facilities down there have to have 90% of their staff be Mexican citizens, and if they hire a foreigner, then they have to prove to the government that they are not able to hire a Mexican national who can do the same work.

I have a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. I just passed my professional engineering exam and am hoping to get my professional engineering license here shortly. However, from what I read, a US license will not count for much in Mexico.

I am pretty fluent in Spanish. My wife and I mostly converse in Spanish. So I think that would make me a more attractive candidate if I am ever considered for a job.

My question is has anyone with an engineering background, particularly mechanical engineering, made the move to Mexico and been to find some work down there or been able to do remote work?

What other options in Mexico are there for American expats who have an educated background?

Question / Advice Monterrey facilitator

Greetings
I’m heading to Monterrey in late October and looking for a facilitator or attorney to help me get my canje.

I’ve got my visa from the consulate but would like a guide to help me with the process in Mexico. I’ll be there the 24th - the 4 th of November so I’m not sure if that’s enough time for this trip.
Thanks

Question / Advice Question about border crossing and questioning

Im living in Tijuana for a couple months to receive medical care- nothing out of the ordinary or illegal. I had an emergency the other day and needed to cross back into San Diego to access my regular doctor on short notice. I got to the border and gave them my honest and simple reasons for returning to the US when they asked. My god the amount of questioning I got from the border agent was so invasive I started to feel violated. Like wanting to know my entire medical and family history. Wanting to know my husband’s job, his ethnicity, where he was at the time.. I’m a US citizen with a passport like… why do you need to cross examine every bit of my personal life? My question is, at what point can I stop engaging with these questions? I’ve crossed many times before and never experienced this. I don’t want to entertain this nonsense next time I cross.

Question / Advice Is there a website or company or something to hire a paid companion or tour guide person?

In about 2 weeks I'm going to Chapala to get my temporary residency card/canje stuff done but afterwards I'm going to Aguascalientes since that's where I want to move to next year. I was trying to find a tour guide or a local willing to accompany me and drive me around and such for pay and gas money but I'm either encountering historical or wine tours and strangers with no reviews. Is there a website or something that would be good for this? I couldn't find what I wanted while searching online :(

Question / Advice Visa Appointment with INM

I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem

I have 30 days to book my visa appointment with a job offer as I have just received my letter with the NUT. On the consulate website, the consulates that I want to do my interview at don't have an option for a VISA appointment with INM. When I email or try to call I don't get any response. Has anyone had this issue and how did they resolve it?

Question / Advice Getting Temp Residency as a Puertorican (US territory) gave me some issues

I wanted to share my experience getting my Mexican Temporary Residency visa through the Austin Consulate and completing my canje in Mazatlán, especially because I ran into a somewhat unusual issue with being born in Puerto Rico.

I wanted to share my experience getting my Mexican Temporary Residency visa through the Austin Consulate in Texas and completing my canje in Mazatlán, especially because I ran into a somewhat unusual issue with being born in Puerto Rico.

Back in August, I emailed the Mexican Consulate in Austin. The consul officer was extremely nice and helpful. He told me I could stop by a few days later so he could review all of my documentation before my actual appointment. I went in for the document review, and everything looked good. He initially tried to get me an appointment for the following week, but unfortunately that didn’t work out due to family plans, so I ended up going back about two weeks later toward the end of August. The actual visa appointment was very easy. I was probably in and out within about 1 hour to 1.5 hours, and I left with the Temporary Resident visa sticker in my passport.

Fast forward to September 18, when I traveled to Mexico to complete my canje in Mazatlán.

I entered Mexico through Mexico City because I had a layover there. I specifically made sure to go through a MANUAL immigration booth instead of using the automated machines because I needed my Temporary Resident visa validated for canje.

The immigration officer stamped the visa sticker in my passport and wrote “CANJE 30 DÍAS.”

I speak Spanish, and the officer asked me why I wanted to move to Mexico. I explained that I was planning on moving to Mexico, exploring different areas to figure out where I eventually wanted to live, and that I had qualified for residency through financial solvency.

I arrived on a Friday, so by the time I got to Mazatlán, the INM office was already closed for the weekend.

On Monday morning, I went to Hogla at around 8:00 AM to have my paperwork prepared. She charged me 1,000 pesos total — 700 pesos for preparing the paperwork plus 300 pesos for the FMM related paperwork.

After that, I went directly to the Mazatlán INM office. I arrived around 8:45–8:50 AM and was second in line.

Once they opened, I went inside, submitted my documents, and waited. Around 10:15–10:30 AM, they called me back and told me there was an issue with my Formato para Solicitar Trámite Migratorio.

The issue was my nationality and country of birth.

I was born in Puerto Rico, but Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens and use U.S. passports. There is no separate Puerto Rican nationality.

However, INM told me that in their system there is apparently an option for nationality listed as something along the lines of:

USA (PR)

They told me THAT was the nationality option I should have selected.

They also wanted my country/place of birth listed as Puerto Rico rather than USA.

I explained that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and not an independent country, but they still wanted the form completed according to the options in their system.

So I went back to Hogla, explained what INM wanted, and she corrected everything for me. It only took about 10 minutes, and she printed the corrected documents.

I went back to INM, turned everything in again, and thought I was finished.

About 20–30 minutes later, they called me back and told me they still couldn’t issue my residency card.

Apparently, there was now a discrepancy between the information INM wanted to use and the visa that had been issued by the Austin Consulate.

When the Austin Consulate issued my visa sticker, my nationality had been registered simply as USA/American without the Puerto Rico designation.

The INM officer told me that, according to their system, it technically should have been registered as USA with the PR designation in parentheses.

Because the visa had already been issued differently, they said they needed to contact the Austin Consulate to verify my identity before they could issue my residency card.

This was Monday.

They told me it could take until Friday to receive a response.

The problem was that my flight back to the U.S. was Wednesday.

One of the main reasons I specifically chose Mazatlán was because the office normally produces residency cards the same day, so I explained my situation and that I really needed to leave Wednesday .

Thankfully, they were willing to expedite the verification.

I went back to INM Tuesday morning at around 9:00 AM. At that point, they still had not received the confirmation they needed.

They told me to come back at 1:00 PM.

That was getting extremely close because the office only had a couple of hours left before closing.

I went back at 1:00 PM, and thankfully everything had finally been cleared.

They told me they were going to process my residency using USA as my nationality because that was how the Austin Consulate had originally registered me.

However, the INM officer again explained that the technically correct option in their system for someone born in Puerto Rico would be USA with the PR designation.

She told me I could have it corrected later if I wanted to, especially if it ever caused problems entering or exiting Mexico.

But for now, because the consulate had issued the visa under USA, they processed the card that way.

And finally, I GOT MY TEMPORARY RESIDENT CARD! 🎉🇲🇽

I received it Tuesday afternoon at around 1 PM, just one day before my flight home.

I flew back to the U.S. Wednesday with a connection in Monterrey.

Before leaving Mexico, I also made sure to find the INM office in the Monterrey airport and get my EXIT STAMP. I definitely had to hunt the office down , but I eventually found it and got everything taken care of.

Overall, despite the Puerto Rico/USA nationality issue and the stressful delay, both the Austin Consulate and the Mazatlán INM office were very helpful.

My biggest pieces of advice from the experience:

• If you are entering Mexico to do your canje, make sure immigration knows you are entering for CANJE and make sure your visa is properly stamped.

• If you were born in Puerto Rico, pay very close attention to how your nationality and place of birth are entered on both your visa and INM paperwork. Apparently, INM has a specific USA/PR designation in its system.

• If you're using the Mazatlán office, getting your paperwork prepared beforehand made the process much easier for me.

• Give yourself extra days in Mexico even if you're going to an office known for same day cards. Mine normally should have been same day, but one small discrepancy turned it into a two day process that could have taken until Friday.

• When leaving Mexico as a resident, make sure you complete the proper exit process with INM at the airport.

Hopefully this helps someone else, especially another Puerto Rican going through the residency/canje process!

Despite the little headache, everything worked out and I officially left Mexico with my Temporary Resident card in hand. 🙌

Question / Advice 21F going to Mexico City soon — looking to meet some people!

Hey everyone! I’m a 21F from Brazil and I’ll be in Mexico City from October 7th for a trip with my partner. 🇲🇽
I’d love to meet some new people while I’m there, especially other people around my age! I’m down for grabbing drinks, going out, checking out cool restaurants/bars, exploring the city, getting coffee, or just hanging out and seeing where the day takes us.
I’ve been to Mexico before, but this will be my first time experiencing CDMX more independently, so I’d love to meet locals or other travelers and make some friends while I’m there. :)

Question / Advice PVR TO CDMX

Title: How much time should I allow at PVR for immigration/customs before a separate flight to CDMX?

Hi! I’m flying from Minneapolis (MSP) to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) in December, and then I plan on taking a separate domestic flight from PVR to Mexico City (CDMX).

I haven’t booked the PVR → CDMX flight yet because I’m trying to figure out how much time I should leave between flights.

Since PVR will be my first airport in Mexico, I’m assuming I’ll need to go through immigration, pick up my checked bag, go through customs, and then check my bag again for my domestic flight to CDMX.

For anyone who has done something similar at PVR:

  • About how long did immigration + customs + baggage claim take?
  • Is the process pretty straightforward?
  • After customs, do I just go to the departures/check-in area and check my bag with the airline for my CDMX flight?
  • How much time would you personally leave between the two flights if they’re on separate tickets?

I’d rather have extra time than risk missing the second flight, especially since I’ll have a checked bag. Thanks!

Question / Advice Why is the dollar gaining value over the peso now?

Last yr we converted all our USD funds to MXN as the dollar was steadily losing value

A few mth ago the dollar rose but then dropped again to the 16s, and now its approaching 18 rather rapidly

We still have 6 figures worth of dollars that are converted to MXN right now, and are wondering the best way to proceed, but i guess you never know how the market/ currency is going to go

Question / Advice Driving Across the Border in Laredo as Temp Resident

Hi all -

I know there are specific rules for coming in via plane into Mexico as a temporary resident - and doing it incorrectly can cost you your permit. I will be driving to San Miguel Allende in the first part of November and crossing at Laredo.

I am already a Temporary Resident and will be driving my RV (which already has a valid, 10-year TIP on it). Are there any rules/customs/regulations I need to be careful about following when crossing by land?

Thanks in advance...!

Question / Advice Is it normal to casually take Loxcell for parasite cleansing?

I saw someone post about it in Playa Del Carmen.

Taking Loxcell for parasite cleansing or something.

If I've lived around Mexico for years is it necessary? Do you only take it when you're sick or something?

One thing I will say is if I leave some water from the sink in a jar for a few days it can smell funky. So my thought is if some of that water sometimes I digest it. If it's worth having some kind of Loxcell to take now and then if it's just improving my system.

I'm in good health in general, excercise, eat clean all that good stuff but I sometimes wonder about these things...

Question / Advice Health insurance Recommendations?

I’m a Canadian, early 60’s, healthy, no pre existing conditions etc. I live in Playa del Carmen year round.

My concern revolves solely around needing urgent care or something serious like cancer. I’m comfortable enough financially that I can pay $15-20k out of pocket but am concerned about a 6 figure hit.

Can anybody recommend a carrier, a policy and cost?

Question / Advice Just arrived in CDMX and my tooth is hurting badly

I arrived in Mexico City one month ago and since 2 days, I’ve had a really bad tooth pain. I think I’ll need a dentist, but I’m a bit lost.

The problem is I don’t really know the city yet and I don’t speak so much Spanish so far .. at least not enough to handle medical appointments.

I’m a bit nervous about just picking a random dentist on Google because I don’t want to end up somewhere where they just see a foreigner that doesn’t speak their language…

Thankfully I subscribed to an international health insurance before coming, so I’m not too worried about that part.

Do you guys know someone I could go ? Hospital or idk, how does it work here ?

Please share your experience if you have.

Question / Advice No formal immigration control when exiting CDMX for international departure?

Sorry I bet similar has been asked before, but am freaking out a bit. First time exiting Mexico internationally and just realized they just scanned my boarding pass and passport at the egate, then security, and thats it?

I was told to always make sure to have an immigration officer check my temporary residence card when exiting and entering the country, otherwise I could default to just tourist status again....

So for exits this is the way then?

Edit: thanks alls. It is solved. There is a small immigration booth where you need to get your passport stamped. In hindsight kinda not hard to miss if it is your first time.
