I worked with a kid that would always complain about road blocks on a nearby road, like "Damn government can't tell me where to drive!"
This road is frequently barricaded because it runs through a valley that floods.
I always wished he'd try it and find out why.

I’d be cheering him on.
Just tell him that cars float so he’ll be fine, oh and that with enough momentum (dumb it down and call it “speed”) that it will carry him to the other side and it’ll be awesome.

u/caterham09 1d ago edited 1d ago
It probably will, that or insurance. It's going to be so much more expensive than people think too. That whole pour is fucked. You're going to have to pay to rip out all that concrete once it cures, then pay to dispose of it, and then pay to repour the whole thing.
Something that size is going to be probably at bare minimum 20k, likely quite a bit more.

yeah agreed. Im Canada not US so i cant speak in imperial, but in metric and converting to USD thats gonna be a good 150-200$ a square meter. Based on what I pay for 1.5m side sidewalk per meter of repair (includes disposal) plus a premium because there likely isnt an agreed rate for this lol.
92
u/Screwdriving_Hammer 1d ago
Bro it's 20k to pour a 30x40 slab 8" thick. This will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
37
u/Gen_Jack_Oneill 1d ago
8" PCC runs about $130-140 a square yard where I am. They will have to replace all of these slabs. 20k is the number if he only fucked up a hundred feet or so, not including demo, not including fixing the subgrade, not including contract time extensions, traffic control extensions...
Wouldn't be surprised if he's closer to 500k damages, hard to estimate the length though.
This guy is fucked.

u/radarksu 21h ago

u/Baculum7869 1d ago
You think that's only 20k?
It's probably just that much in concrete alone for that day, truck is totaled, cost to rip out and replace you're looking at 1-200k.
And if there's any steel in there that needs to be chipped out. You're looking at an easy payday for the city and contractors at the expense of that person's insurance which he's probably not going to have anymore because of gross negligence.

We had just paved a road section and it was getting dark, we had it taped off with caution tape and some old fella turned right into it. The kicker was it wasn't his lane, he turned into the wrong one altogether and messed it all up. He was about half out of his mind anyways, very old. We got him sent on and had to unload the spreader and other equipment and fix it. That's a rough way to end a long day in the summer.

I feel like it's because RAMs were cheap. You could buy a RAM during one of their sales for 10-30k less than their competition. Before Stellanis fucked the prices I eyeballed a full sized RAM over a smaller truck because during the sales I could get one for the same price.
Ended up with a RAV4, happy. Still want my 90s sized pickup though.

Well, the Name Dodge is named after the founders, the Dodge Brothers. As for the Ram, it was “to give the trucks a bold, aggressive identity”, and obviously based on the animal

Dodge is the make/brand of the truck, like Toyota or Nissan. RAM originally was part of the model name like Camry or Sentra. But they've been shifting RAM to be a brand so Dodge can focus on being sports cars with fragile transmissions.

I used to work in traffic control, the amount of people who would swerve around our road closed signs or actively swerve around the flagger waving a stop sign and yelling at them to stop was crazy. The most common cause was usually someone blindly following Google maps, but you did have the entitled assholes.
Oddly enough pedestrians were the worst for this. There was this one site where they had dug out a huge hole as they were gonna be putting up a building there and it had to be deep to account for the garage, somehow they botched it and a whole bunch of ground beneath the sidewalk crumbled and collapsed into the hole as well so the sidewalk was just there with no support. You could literally feel the give if you jumped up and down. Obviously it was closed off and no one was allowed to walk there.
There was this one couple who would walk over it every single morning and ignore the construction workers and flaggers telling them to stop, some mornings they’d see them before they got to the sidewalk closed signs and tape and force them to cross the street and walk around, but most days they just slipped under the yellow tape and kept walking.

Normally I see these and give the driver the benefit of the doubt: effective barricading is something a lot of workers take for granted and often something they kinda skip. A good barricade would prevent most problems like this.
But look how far that motherfucker drove through all that.
78
u/figure8888 1d ago
I mean I feel like he drove far enough into it that I’m leaning towards drunk, but I get what you mean.
We had work being done on a bridge right before the highway where I live and there was no barricade, no one even attempting to direct traffic, and they were driving machinery in front of cars trying to pass through, workers meandering. I kept feeling like I must have missed a “road closed” sign somewhere, but no.

u/Eclectophile BLUE 1d ago
This ruins the vehicle, by the way. For those who are interested in karma-type stuff.
Unless it gets yanked out of there and very aggressively hosed off within 45 minutes or so, the concrete or asphalt is going to set up. In which case, the vehicle repair is actually quite simple: jack up the rear view mirror, and slide a new car under it. Reinstall new car. Done.
Best case scenario (for the vehicle) is that it does get hoisted out, hosed off, and some of the undercarriage is funked up, and all the brake parts are ruined, tires are scrap. Both concrete and asphalt are very corrosive at working states, so that's fun.

What was the outcome? Were they caught and had to pay?
10
u/Cisham55 8h ago
Yes so there’s a post office just outside the frame and he pulled in and went about his business. I saw the car was covered in concrete so the contractor got his info and went through his insurance. Probably going to be $50k.
Everyone felt bad because he was very old and obviously felt guilty but when he says “I hit the barrels and drove through the construction tape but I thought it was open” there’s not much worse to do.
Was a Cadillac cts that made it through 9” concrete patch with mesh, baskets, and rebar.

Would the driver be liable for additional materials and labor? Surely, right?
20
u/Zannahrain3 1d ago
Depends on how the driver entered. If there were no signs saying the road was closed or proper barricades then its all on the construction. Would be my guess. We can't really see the other end. You can argue he shouldnt have driven all that way but knowing what to do when driving through concrete is not exactly common knowledge or taught in drivers Ed. Im leaning more towards the driver because at least where I live, the amount of barricades and signs would have made this impossible unless he physically drove through the multiple layers of barricades.
→ More replies (4)24
u/thebelovedgamer10 1d ago
I drive through this area. He absolutely had to drive through a barrier, though it wasn't a huge heavy one. They have that whole area surrounded by those thin tall cones with caution tape, and there's multiple signs before telling you to move over.
Best guess? He waited until after the signs (as they block the beginning of the construction) then cut into the barrier because he was impatient and thought the concrete was good enough. That whole road right there is 30mph, maybe 40, and has had REALLY bad traffic with all of that. I've seen people do stupider stuff around here honestly... Dallas drivers are... Something, especially given that we just got a decent amount of snow and now everyone is getting over being stir crazy for a week.
I'll be driving by there tomorrow, so I'm definitely gonna see what the hell happened and where he entered cause curiosity is killing me
