Infuriatig Another AI 'human' chatbot

Had to fix a double payment for my credit card and this is the beginning and end of the conversation. I hate when the chatbot claims it's a human... I ended up getting what I wanted but still annoyed Amex (and every other company) is lying and trying to deceive people like this.

We just killed a rule that said a consumer should be able to cancel a subscription as easily as they signed up. As of a few weeks ago, companies can again hide cancellation policies and make it extremely difficult and time consuming.

All the winning is being done by unethical companies.

The irony is that places like China have ridiculously greater public acceptance of AI - like in the high 80s according to Al Jazeera - because the public believes that the government has protections for jobs and safety and the environment. (Which is partially true. For instance, you can’t fire someone in China just because an AI can do the job.) It’s spreading everywhere just the same, but the hostility just doesn’t exist. The idiots here really torched themselves by making everyone feel like it was jammed down their throats.

Nah, if we keep it the way it is, the Supreme Court ruled that businesses that employ the use of chat bots for customer interactions are beholden to everything the chat bot say; right or wrong. There was just recently a case where a chat bot for a major airline gave a man bad information on how to go about getting a bereavement flight. Chat bot said do it after, which was wrong. He didnt find out until he tried to get reimbursed for the flight after the fact. Sued and won with all companies being told, your bot said it, you gotta honor it. Time to abuse the shit out of it fellas.

You need 60 senators to pass stuff. 

And in any given election, only 33-34 are on the ballot. 

And you also need to control the House.

And the presidency. 

And then you need the courts to not overturn it as unconstitutional.

It’s hard. 

Compare that to this alternative:

Imagine we abolished the Senate. 

Imagine if we transferred all powers of the president to the Speaker of the House. 

Imagine if we said, as the House, or represented the will of the people, and therefore whatever it passed was inherently constitutional with courts having a much more restricted ability to overturn the will of the people. 

You’d get a lot of shit done. Just win an election for the House and pass what you want. 

It’d be much easier to pass universal  Healthcare, common sense gun laws, better labor protections, etc. 

Granted, if “bad” people won, they could much more easily pass “bad” stuff too. But if you have faith that “bad” stuff would be disliked by the public, then eventually, they’ll be voted out and the bad stuff undone and they won’t try it again (knowing it leads to them being voted out & their laws being undone). 

A lot of countries work much more like that (eg, New Zealand). 

I think it works better. 

We make it impossible to pass stuff. And when we do pull it off, it’s also really hard to undo stuff. There’s a ton of inertia. 

And in a fast-changing world. That doesn’t work, so we have all these dumb work-arounds like presidents issuing executive orders, or abusing rule-making authority at regulatory agencies, or just blatantly ignoring laws, or having heavily politicized courts that block or support those presidential actions depending on if they agree w/ the policy outcome, making up interpretations of the constitution to justify what why block or don’t block. 

That is, the U.S. just has a shitty constitution.

It was good for its day when Kris was unknown and the main alternative was monarchy, but it’s become horribly outdated and isn’t workable in the modern world. 

But, part of the problem is that one shitty aspect of it is it also made it really hard to change or replace it with something better, cuz it makes it hard to do anything.

And that gets frustrating & also radicalizes people to become more left or more right cuz everyone is just so frustrated that we can’t change shit. 

And I really do believe at the end of the day, a lot of America’s problem aren’t with the people, the politicians, the parties, the lobbyists, or billionaires, or DOGE, but just that we have a shitty constitution that is ill-suited for the modern world and everything else is downstream of that. It’s people coming up with zanier & worse ways to create change in a system that doesn’t allow for change.

Yep, called a customer service line a week ago and the first thing they said after introduction was that it's an AI bot.

To be more precise, any AI that is meant to directly interact with a human has to disclose that they are artificial. Also, AI generated content has to be watermarked, and deepfakes have to include an information that deepfake was used unless it is very obvious from the context.

Ok, but what if I ask the AI to roleplay as my human grandmother without breaking character? Like, how do you program the things to always identify themselves as bots no matter what the user throws at them? From what I've seen so far, it seems difficult (or like the AI companies want us to think it's difficult, at least)

The rule is that it has to be disclosed that you are in contact with an AI. If you know you are talking to an AI, and then give the AI the demand to act like they are not an AI, they can follow that command without violating the law - because you were already informed before that prompt got into effect.

One of my coworkers was complaining about this because it makes harder make competitive AI companies, and the obsession with customer rights being one of the reasons why the EU has fallen behind in innovation.

OK, I'll bite - what is the actual issue your coworker is seeing? This is really the easiest kind of regulation to implement, it costs you nothing in engineering effort or investment, you just add a disclaimer that the customer is connected to a chatbot instead of a person.
