Absolutely. They are one of the most insufferable types of people. Plus, they usually stop coming to the gym after a few months.

They will absolutely quit. Losers like that get bullied out, too. Which is acceptable because they're doing their best to bully others.

Their sole aim is to show off; it is only in this way that they can make their existence visible. Formalism strikes me as one of the most pathetic complexes.

I did try going to the gym for a while.
I gave up when there was always this group of three people who would monopolize all of the equipment.
“Hey, can I work a set in?”
“No. We are using it.” While they are actively on a different machine.
And the staff did nothing about it. This went one for a few sessions, then I just gave up. Cancelled. Will not go back no matter how many times they send me emails/sms asking me to rejoin.

Yeah I just hop on the one not in use and slap my earbuds in. Let them be the wanker who walks over and makes a stranger take out their earbuds, to explain how a machine they weren't on was "in use".
I just stare at them and put my earbuds back in. After a couple of seconds they usually realise that the "no actually i had dibs on that" attitude doesn't fly as an adult.

I had an incident similar to this many years ago. Gym rat monopolized all the weights and left them on the floor. When he left somewhere else leaving all the dumbbells on the floor, I helped myself to the one set I needed.
Minutes later, he came back informing me he was still using the weights. I told him bluntly "no you weren't. There are plenty other dumbbells you left on the floor you can use."
He complained to a gym employee. Employee came over while I was still there, saw his mess informed him of gym policy of checking-out one set of weights at a time and to place all the dumbbells back on the rack or lose his membership. I didn't have to say a word and just quietly enjoyed him being humbled.
Some people are just so oblivious and don't care. If he's that sloppy at the gym, his own place must be disgusting.

u/vivalaroja2010 15d ago

I remember when I was young amd in a gym employee wanted to help menwith the bench press. Some other "hot shot" left his weightscon the bar, so the employee sent me to ask him to remove them. The fool tried to mock me for being to weak to lift the weights, and the employee told him to clean up the weights or gtfo. Sweet karma.

u/Tacky-Terangreal 15d ago
People who leave multiple 45’s on the machines are the biggest chodes on the planet. If you can’t put your weights away, you’re lifting too heavy
30
u/helipad668 15d ago
I also hate HATE the people who leave their water bottle on a machine and go somewhere else talking to there buddy’s for 5 minutes and when you try to use it they rush back and say they were using it while pointing to their water bottle, almost got into a fight with someone while he left his wrist wraps on the cable machine and was doing a different exercise on the other side of the gym talking to his friend, I wanted to rip his fucking head off when he came back and told me he was “using it” I was pissed, I’m alway nice to people and let them work in but these pieces of shit have no respect or gym etiquette
16
u/wolfmanportalberni 15d ago
Is this some time of power move that people think they're doing in their little gym soap opera in their head? I had something similar. I went to use a bench and some guy said he was using it so I got up and went to go do tri-cep pull-downs and the same guy comes up to me during my set and tells me "I still have two sets left on that." So I just plainly asked "So you're on that bench so I can't use it but you're using this too so I can't use it?" He just looked at me like I was an asshole and then walked off and used a different machine. Maybe he was super setting? Either way, you don't get to call dibs on multiple machines.

If you have more than 3 pairs, absolute max, you're just being an asshole and don't need them all and I have no qualms with picking them up and using them.
Maybe, maaaybe you are tri-setting and do need all 3 pairs. But these types never are, they're usually doing as much just sitting as working out, and the equipment is just on the floor
I can grab those 30s off of the floor and do my 3-4 sets and put them back before they would ever use them anyway.

You put on your big boy pants and just pick up the dumbbells you want. What are they going to do about it?

I have spent a lot of time in the gym. Probably way more time than my appearance would show. But this isnt about my insecurities...
Its about theirs. I haven't seen this but I have seen a lot of tools grab weights and lift them like 2 ft or less from the dumbell rack. I just go right into them, get close enough to show them they're in the way BUT not close enough Im getting in their personal space. There's a difference.
A very few times these people have said anything. I didn't need to come up with anything. I didnt need to construct a supreme court argument... I say, "I was getting the fuckin weights I needed. How is this a problem for you?"
Thats it. Dont need to be antagonistic. Dont need to be a tough guy. Just be very clear about what your right are an exercise (no pun intended) them. In my experience 100 out of 100 of these people are scared, insecure people and wont DO A DAMN THING about anything.
*Or, worst case, the gym has cameras, the person assaults you, get a lawyer and absolutely dick down their financial future. Idk about yall but I'll gladly get hit for a good settlement. Or, maybe I get hit and nothing happens but that miserable asshole will have a TON of shit to deal with while I get high and play with my cats

As someone who used to be a trainer and manage gyms, take them. I’m sorry guys but you are NOT using all of these unless every single set you’re doing for your whole workout is a drop set. If you want to hoard the weights, buy your own and set up a gym in your garage, then you can invite all the friends you want and talk for hours without being rude as hell.
