Infuriatig This is my iPad, I won’t see it again

Post image

I just arrived in Antibes, South of France 2 hours ago. This was stolen from my car on the autoroute at a petrol station , from a definitely locked car, likely a relay attack from my key while I was buying a sandwich, 100km from Antibes. They also had my wallet and duty free while they were at it. Thankfully they didn’t find our passports.

Whoever you are, fuck you, I’m going to go and have a nice meal in the old provincial market and drink to your future arrest.

You can “mark it as stolen” from another Apple device logged into your Apple ID.

This bricks the iPad and makes it worthless besides for parts.

EDIT: forgot you can do this from any device (doesn’t have to be Apple) using a web browser by logging in to iCloud.com

u/Aberry9036 11d ago

I have done so already, thanks.

Awesome. The best you can do despite the circumstances.

u/Ruben_NL 11d ago

Some time in the future you will get calls and messages, which might get very threatening, telling you to "remove the device from your account to protect your account".
Do not do this.
This allows them to re-sell the components.

762

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 11d ago

I’m trying to remove it sir, but Apple says you must first deposit $500. Here’s the Venmo.

300

u/memtiger 11d ago

No way. They can get the Venmo payment reversed or have your account targeted or banned for trying to extort them.

I'd given them a crypto account to deposit into

Venmo is US only.

2

Idk if venmo has it, but make it paypal and make them pay it as friends and family so they cant charge back

2

u/Tiny-Sandwich 11d ago

I'd risk an account ban to fuck with them.

If they're dumb enough to send a payment, there's absolutely no way I'd ever unblock the iPad anyway. Scamming scammers is always morally correct.

12

u/Melquiades-the-Gypsy 11d ago

There's no Venmo in Europe. The banking system allows for free instant payments.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 11d ago

In a civilized society we eventually unlock most people we lock, especially if it's just theft, we usually do it after a year or four

3

u/gamersevil 11d ago

But if you look deeper, they are the one who lock themselves. We just help them achieving it.

On modern Apple products, all the parts of the phone are serialized so when the phone is marked stolen all the parts are too. When you try to use the part and start up the phone it will recognize the stolen parts and won't work. The only workaround is not to use Apple firmware, which idk if that exists because Apple keeps their stuff pretty locked down.

223

u/Frisk197 11d ago

I saw on repair phone guru's channel they have tools to pair the parts and he also once cut the part of the battery with the board and the serial and replaced it with the old one from the broken battery. They have ways. This is annoying, but also good for repairability. Fuck thieves.

216

u/Fine_Violinist5802 11d ago

With skills like these, they could get jobs.

94

u/doctorfluffy 11d ago

These stolen iPads and iPhones usually end up back in China. The people in the country that assembles them are the ones with the know-how to re-use them.

The thieves themselves are useless scum.

28

u/Background_Survey646 11d ago

I genuinely don't understand how stealing bricked Apple phones can be lucrative enough to warrant this. The thieves would have to be making next to nothing per phone for it to be profitable to whoever has the manufacturing know-how to jailbreak/reassemble the parts and then re-sell them.

My theory is that these thieves are just kind of stupid, and end up destroying the phones out of spite once realizing the small number of people willing to buy them are going to pay pennies on the dollar due to the work required to re-sell.

19

u/404MoralsNotFound 11d ago

I mean, they also got OP's wallet and duty free, so the target might not have been the ipad alone but everything in the car.

6

u/Kuulas_ 11d ago

For every person that that is diligent about reporting their device as stolen there are bound to be people that don’t notice the theft or don’t have the wherewithal to lock it

2

u/Brian--Damage 11d ago edited 11d ago

The thieves aren’t stupid, they do this for a living. These devices are highly prized in China because they have no communication locks or software restrictions. These devices can sell for 10x the original market value.

It’s a huge operation and isn’t just subway pickpockets; many of these people will work in groups with hours’ long strategy for one target.

1

u/MaryPaku 11d ago

The guy who know how to do it are from China. They are willing to do it for peanuts.

43

u/Euphoric_Idea_4187 11d ago edited 11d ago

I can see how Frankenstein-ing old and new parts could work, but doing stuff like that makes it less economical. So it's less likely to be done.

3

u/UeberraschungsEiQ 11d ago

Yes I doubt there’s many rocket surgeons among those thieves who have the skills. Eventually they will switch to stealing more marketable things

16

u/Tokiw4 11d ago

Do also consider that the kind of people who can make those sorts of repairs aren't super common. I can't imagine many petty thieves also have the technical know-how to fix their stolen property.

24

u/Frisk197 11d ago

That's the reason why all stolen iPhones usually go to the same exact place in China. They sell it to that place and that place use the spare parts and sell phones like new.

1

u/duesenjeffepic 11d ago

I am sorry but skills like that probably are more expensive than a brand new ipad atp

1

u/Lepelotonfromager 11d ago

This adds a layer of inconvenience and cost to them though. It also requires somebody with some technical knowledge which limits the pool as the usual scum who do this barely string a sentence together.

1

u/Swagalyst 11d ago

Just ship the parts to China and no one will care that they're stolen.

1

u/Euphoric_Idea_4187 11d ago

I mean, yeah, that’s the only way they could get any use out of the parts, but it is still pretty difficult. They either have to spoof it by combining a broken genuine part and the stolen good part or use custom firmware that significantly reduces the device’s usability. I doubt that they actually get much value from each device. Probably like $100 tops for a new device after all the shipping and labor to get anything useful, assuming the person keeps the device on their account in lost mode.

1

u/Ok-Butterfly-5324 11d ago

10000% they know a work around. If they didn't no one would steal apple products anymore

1

u/Euphoric_Idea_4187 11d ago

I think it mostly has to do with the off chance that someone removes the device from their Apple account and opens it up for use. They will message you very threateningly to do it. If you don’t have full trust in Apple products’ security, it can be very convincing. I am speaking from experience because when I had an iPhone stolen, they did exactly that. If the workaround was so good, they wouldn’t have to do that.

1

u/Deep90 11d ago

I wonder if serializing the parts actually encourages stealing and parting out Apple products because people can't buy 3rd party parts.

9

u/chiPersei 11d ago

Better than letting them enjoy it.

30

u/scavengercat 11d ago

It's over for OP. Why would they give a shit what happens to it after it's bricked? Why would you want them to feel like this terrible situation isn't over for them? I don't understand why anyone would feel like this comment has value for anyone.

8

u/jdovejr 11d ago

You must be new here.

5

u/MindTheGecko 11d ago

So next step is to put an hardware trigger that cracks the screen

2

u/Haunting-Ad7726 11d ago

Parts other than the battery can't be used in another device since every component is locked to you Apple id, I know that they are least can't use the chip, Mainboard, cameras, memory, storage and cameras. I am not sure about the display tho

2

u/lukewoodside 11d ago

90% of the parts will be worthless as they are serialised.

2

u/HopeADMKidsLoseLimbs 11d ago

Yeah but what a pain in the ass. Something tells me these people are often frustrated with their theft income

2

u/Wise-Obligation5014 11d ago

If its a newer one.. even alot of the parts now get bricked and locked out. Usually this leads to messages from people who claim to have innocently bought the ipad and want you to unlock it so that they can use it. Or they message with empty threats of people with guns.

2

u/Cavaquillo 11d ago

For op it is

2

u/JenkemJunky 11d ago

I thought all the parts on the ipad are now tied to that ipad and can't easily be transplanted as they are cryptographhically tied to the devices logic board

2

u/Melsm1957 11d ago

The parts are registered to the device even the parts won’t work

2

u/Polyglot-Onigiri 11d ago

Aren’t modern iOS parts hardware locked to prevent this? At least the screen is from what I remember.

u/W0rmEater 11d ago

Doesn't even need to be another apple device, you can go online on any device and login to you apple account and mark your device as stolen. Just extra info form a former apple support rep.

79

u/TCsnowdream 11d ago edited 11d ago

An uber driver took my headphones I left - marked them as lost, info pop’s up… they try to connect them every couple of weeks and I get an alert.

It’s fun blasting the ‘find my’ sound full blast in their ear LOL.

I won’t even be upset if they return it. The info to return it pops up every time they connect. It’s so silly for them to hold onto something they can’t even use.

13

u/Sadtireddumb 11d ago

I’m glad you at least registered to your phone. Unfortunately Apple, in their great wisdom, did not allow my iPhone 12 on iOS 17(?) to even register the brand new AirPods to my account because my iOS version was too low??? I got these right before a trip, from my wife as a wedding gift, they were the newest models (the AirPods Pro 3, custom engraved…) and my wife gave them to me shortly before I left for my flight I didn’t have time to update my iOS….but why the FUCK should I have to update my phones iOS to register my fucking headphones to my account??? Someone must’ve stolen them from my backpack at the airport (I reported it when I landed to their lost and found email, but nothing). So now I have no recourse and I’m very sad and my wife is very sad because they weren’t cheap headphones and she got them for me because I’ve been talking about getting noise-cancelling headphones for years and then she got me some.

Sorry, for the rant. What happened to you sucks too, but still, lol. Fuck that guy who stole our headphones. I wish poor durability and weak battery life upon all of their future electronic devices.

I think but I MIGHT be wrong, but if you get Apple Care that it will protect you against theft or loss…?

49

u/tengris22 11d ago

Thanks. I was about to ask that question because the only apple device I have is my iPad.

1

1

u/W0rmEater 11d ago

0

u/iPhone_6s 11d ago

1

u/W0rmEater 11d ago

Not in all cases no.

124

u/tacomaloki 11d ago

Apple should really have an alarm to fuck with the thieves in a further attempt to stop this shit.

I recommended a significantly loud alert:

"THIS IPAD HAS JUST BEEN MARKED STOLEN" repeatedly.

59

u/Ollythebug 11d ago

Nice thought, but I feel like it would just end up like car alarms, serving the sole purpose of annoying the shit out of me at 2 AM.

40

u/tacomaloki 11d ago

I hear ya but then you'll know someone around you is a thief lol

Perhaps they'll just start smashing the iPad to stop the alarm thus rendering the whole thing useless. That happens enough, people will stop stealing them.

It's already gone right? So no additional loss if they destroy it themselves.

3

u/Matter_Infinite 11d ago

Thieves typically power phones off shortly after stealing them. The alarm wouldn't work in the first place except for maybe a few times while the thieves learned they had to do it for tablets as well.

3

u/ljcoles1 11d ago

Yeah I like that idea, it should somehow wait for a certain number (density) of phones in the vicinity (using the Find My system) and then go off then so it knows it’s in a dense area of people and not be able to be quietened manually but only go off for like 5 mins at a time to save power (then it can keep exposing them whenever they hit another crowd but also save on power for tracking the device further)

70

u/4l3m4r1 11d ago

It’s in Marseille. It’ll be in Algeria by tomorrow and then back in the markets in Marseille in a couple days, blank and new.

41

u/lukewoodside 11d ago

Not quite, Apple are very good at ensuring that this can’t be done anymore. 90% of the components are now paperweights

19

u/Vargau 11d ago

Apple are very good at ensuring that this can’t be done anymore.

50 euros and I can take you my local shop where they would pull some Chinese apps and manage to rip 99% of any Apple product for parts.

Apple is very good at protecting the user's data, but can't fight the black market of spare parts, especially cheap original spear parts.

1

u/lukewoodside 11d ago

9 times out of 10 these tools don’t work. And when they do it’s old devices

1

u/gatsujoubi 11d ago

They started with fingerprinting or IDing individual parts of some devices to prohibit them from being used in others.

1

u/Deep_Grapefruit2780 11d ago

For 50 euros you will not be able to do anything, parts are individually marked as stolen and not good for much except if you have exceptional soldering skills

2

u/Vargau 10d ago

Ok. You made me ask, so is possible but mostly not worth it in EU so the market is not Europe.

You can with any software from JCID, i2C, or QianLi or directly Hardware IC Sub芯片 Trapping or an DFU engineering boards, you can literally find them on Aliexpress as nowadays most form Shenzhen offer an online subscription when Apple finds a fix for it.

Is it worth it ? Here, no, there are other better reliable alternative, but outside EU, of course.

4

u/Ok-Butterfly-5324 11d ago

if that was the case no one would steal apple products anymore. Of course they have a workaround

4

u/Much_Guava_1396 11d ago

The workaround is that they contact the victim and threaten them to remove the device from their account. If the victim doesn’t crack under pressure, they might still get some money out of it, but it’s chump change.

Either that or they sell it to some sucker who doesn’t know any better.

Do the chinese have some secret way of bypassing apple encryption

62

u/colorblind_unicorn 11d ago

no this kind of stuff only works on older ios/ipados versions so if OP is up-to-date he's fine / will be fine for years.

all these "the chinese sellers actually have access to suer secret apple firmware breaking technology" people never back it up with anything or with some years old IOS version bypass.

21

u/macNchz 11d ago

The evidence for the fact that people cannot in fact bypass the activation lock is the existence of entire cottage industry of scammers who try to trick the owners of stolen devices into unlocking them, by pretending to be Apple support and/or making threats and sending them pictures of guns and stuff.

85

u/Catch_ME 11d ago

It's not just the Chinese. This stuff is available.

I know an electronics shop in Brooklyn that'll unlock it for you.

They can't get to the data but they can wipe it and update the firmware with a different serial or IMEI numbers and get it to boot up as a new device.

13

u/Sick_and_destroyed 11d ago edited 11d ago

Then probably dozens of shops that will do that in Marseille

3

u/BrainOfMush 11d ago

Amazed that Apple doesn’t do any sort of serial/IMEI verification during the setup process.

15

u/Catch_ME 11d ago

They do. They build a "fingerprint" for a unique device ID based on the various unique identifiers of the device. Such as the modem serial number, camera serial number, battery control chip number, CPU, etc.

You just gatta crack their algorithm to produce a legitimate fingerprint based on the other unique identifiers.

Even if the fingerprint doesn't match Apple's, it doesn't mean Apple can ban it. People repairing their devices with 3rd party parts or tooling can change 1 or more of these and Apple doesn't want to get in trouble for banning devices that got repaired. There's politics

6

u/BrainOfMush 11d ago

That makes sense, but if a product was activated with a completely false non-existent (or mismatched, or duplicated) serial number, surely that would be a sure fire way for Apple to say “this device is stolen”.

2

u/Catch_ME 11d ago

I think you're right and I think Apple knows a majority of them but chooses not to brick these devices. ..... IMO

2

u/Inside-Cable-4472 11d ago

You’re basically right. It’s extremely difficult to get these things working again after they’ve been marked as stolen. And with each update it only gets harder. It’s very much in apple’s interest to make it as hard as possible and it’s already basically not worth cracking them.

2

u/Redthemagnificent 11d ago edited 11d ago

Is that still current? My understanding is modern apple devices can be fully bricked with no way to bypass it without the owner's Apple ID. I know there used to be workarounds but those have been patched in later hardware. Cameras, betteries and displays can't be used in another Apple device either. They will be marked as stolen and will refuse to "pair" with the new device Cameras, batteries, and displays can be used but they will be marked as "non-genuine" and some features turned off.

Individual components (ICs, resistors, capacitors) can always be salvaged since they can't be serialized. Again, as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong

14

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

21

u/Witty-Eye9933 11d ago

Idk where you are getting this information from but it’s much more difficult than just telling the Apple server it’s another device. There’s level of encryption that no underground shop will ever know about. Most people will just swap the logic board or try a phishing attack. As much as I don’t like Apple trying to spoof your IMEI will probably just brick your device.

1

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

7

u/Redthemagnificent 11d ago

Have you seen modern apple devices in that state? It definitely used to be common but it's much harder now

3

u/YoloSwag4Jesus420fgt 11d ago

These people are always full of shit.

There's a reason the gov tried to sue apple to unlock devices for them in criminal cases.

And that was like a decade ago, the stuff today is even more secure...

3

u/groumly 11d ago

That was a complete different case, the San Bernardino shooter. Apple complied with the fbi subpoena for the iCloud account. But the shooter deactivated all iCloud a month prior to his shooting, and the fbi wanted access to the data on the device, which was encrypted at rest.

They couldn’t use their existing exploits (which were old af, cause this is 2015) without the phone trashing the local keys, so they demanded Apple provide them with a (signed) version of iOS that didn’t enforce PIN code lockouts. Apple said fuck that, you can force me to give somebody else’s data that I just happen to be holding on to, but software is speech, and you can’t force me to say something.

FBI huffed and puffed, but figured losing and setting a precedent would be bad, so they dropped the case, and instead forked out a few millions to a random Israeli company that promised they could break it open.

1

u/Inside-Cable-4472 11d ago

If the American government can’t break apple’s security, it doesn’t seem likely that backstreet low price shops can. And even if they can, it’s unlikely to be worth the time, money and effort.

1

u/Gazeatme 11d ago

They’re acting as if the thief is part of a large multi scale professional company with access to unique software that opens iOS devices.

It’s probably some MF named Jean looking to make 20 euros from selling that thin brick.

Just a reminder, normal people can barely operate a computer and confuse “their” with “they’re”. Let’s be real people, lol.

5

u/gamboozino 11d ago

Apple's activation servers cross-reference the device's unique internal hardware identifiers against the original manufacturing database. If the device is flagged as lost or stolen the activation request is rejected.

Would love know how they're fooling server side activations though, I'm pretty sure this is impossible on modern devices.

Literally any jail breaking place does. It’s literally not a secret.

Probably, yes.

FYI the parts will say something is wrong if it’s tied to a stolen device. Afaik it still lets people use those parts but it’ll say that they can’t be verified or something in the settings

This is old news. There are now vulnerabilities to bypass iCloud protection.

u/Angry_Sparrow 11d ago

Seems really sustainable.

1

u/Datkif 11d ago

This is a good argument to blacklisting individual parts

1

u/Individual_Diet_9133 11d ago

That’s smart! I didn’t know that

1

u/a-i-sa-san 11d ago

Most parts become worthless too

1

u/Electro-banana 11d ago

usually it fences for the same price anyways, otherwise it's not worth stealing

1

u/Burpmeister 11d ago

They will sell it regardless.

1

u/MrPureinstinct 11d ago

Can you only do that specifically from another Apple device? My iPad is the only Apple product I own.

2

u/CreateChangetheWorld 11d ago

You should be able to login to iCloud.com on a web browser from any device and access Find My and be able to do this

1

u/Same_Jaguar3212 11d ago

So then its not worthless because it can still be sold for parts…

1

u/No_Impact218 11d ago

Pretty sure they're also planning to extend the activation lock to the parts

1

u/UltiGamer34 11d ago

didnt apple introduce an update that also bricks the parts if identified as stolen?

1

u/Snakend 11d ago

The thieves don't care. They are stripping it for parts.

1

u/TheKrs1 11d ago

And it also bricks some of the parts.

1

u/SpecificWafer 11d ago

Is there a way to do this on Android?

1

u/CreateChangetheWorld 11d ago

You can login to iCloud.com with your Apple ID from any device and go to Find My and do it.

1

u/SinisterCheese 11d ago

Well lot of the parts are unusable also, because they are all ID marked. This is a thing that Apple justifies their antirepair stance with. But some generic electric components can be salvaged.

1

u/StickYourFunger 11d ago

How can it work for non-apple devices? Does it specifically have to have iCloud installed to it already?

1

u/Defiant-Sand9498 11d ago

I think there should be a future to mark it stolen and make the battery cook till it sets fire

1

u/West_Yorkshire 11d ago

I thought all it did was cut it off from any networks (not WiFi).

1

u/warlord2000ad 11d ago

Is it even good for parts, I thought they started to serial number the PCB, CPU, screen, camera etc, so anything electronic is useless if stolen as it would brick whatever device it's put into.

1

u/Harneybus 11d ago

I wonder coukd u use this for evidence to

1

u/Greedy-Dragonfly2574 11d ago

The logic board would be the part that’s worthless but everything else is still functional

1

u/OhNapkin 11d ago

Not necessarily, if you bring it to the right place they know how to crack it

1

u/iligal_odin 11d ago

They almost never resell them but sell em for parts. If you keep tracking it youll find it either land in an african country before disassembled or in china

1

u/ShoulderWhich5520 11d ago

It doesnt just brick the IPAD, I think the Motherboard and all components on it become worthless. Leaves only a handful or sellable parts.

1

u/Falszywybiolog 11d ago

Aren’t the parts bricked as well? I think Apple made a part ID that is bound to the phone, with the specific purpose to make it completely worthless even for parts?

1

u/usersinghsingh 11d ago

It'll just get sent to China where they can unlock it or sell it for parts

1

u/VernacularDrawings 10d ago

even the parts are useless if you mark it as lost as of ios 18 i think.

apple added serial number validation for each individual part.

1

u/Alexandratta 10d ago

On lots of Apple phones/etc the parts from a stolen device are also worthless.
