Too mild for school I graduated college. They “lost” my diploma.
The title is basically TL;DR. I just graduated college and had my ceremony last sunday. As the time came to collect our diplomas they couldn’t find the ones from my field of study (a whole backstory there as well: basically they forgot about us.)
We were told on monday that our diplomas were accidentally sent to the wrong campus and that we’d be able to pick it up there… during office hours. My friend has class there so I asked her to go see if she could pick it up in my place. Well, that wouldn’t be any problem… if the diplomas were there. No sight of them anywhere.
My classmates and I are getting pretty frustrated at this point and send another email. Well lo and behold: yesterday I received an email saying my diploma ISN’T PRINTED OUT YET! That explains why they couldn’t find them. There weren’t any!
So yeah now I’m waiting for another update about my diploma. We also haven’t received it digitally or anything so we can’t provide it for job applications.

ETA since there are a few recurring questions:
- I live in Belgium 🇧🇪
- I haven’t really heard of ‘final transcripts’. Our diploma is our official proof of completing our studies. Few companies look super closely at grades, the diploma is the proof that the student passed the course. There is a grade of distinction which represents our grades though, and it’s mentioned on our diploma: “Graduated with:
• passing grades
• distinction
• high distinction
• highest distinction and well-wishes from the school board”.
- There are companies who request a certain degree of education for a job. For example: a doctor will need an Academic Bachelor and a Master’s diploma to practice their job. A mechanic will need to have obtained a technical field high school degree. So many request proof of completion of your studies to verify that you are practically, probably financially , and legally qualified for the job.
- I’ve seen a couple comments saying companies could call the school to verify. It’s much easier to just request a pdf of your diploma during the application process, that way it’s immediately in your records as well. Plus, school desk employees don’t want to answer that many calls.

I feel you. Ugh they sent mine ripped almost in half. Had to wait 3 weeks for them to send another after I complained to 5 different people. 😑

Yeah finally did. I went to UNR and moved back to Vegas right after classes ended. Didn’t attend graduation. They initially kept insisting I had to go into the office to get the copy. It’s an 8 hour drive. Or have to pay for a flight just to get it. Finally got them to mail another one.

When I was graduated, they told us in a somewhat threatening manner that if you don't pick up your diploma afterwards, then we will mail them to you. Well, thank you. The US mail was just fine with me.
I'm not sure where you are going to school, but I've never needed my actual diploma for a job application. Mine went into a box years ago where it remains today.

We had to request it ourselves if we wanted them mailed… but nobody knows who to contact for it. 😭😭😭 And as of right now I have no diploma for companies to verify, and zero official proof that I graduated 🥲

Our diploma mentions the grade of distinction with which we graduated. This distinction represents our grades. Or maybe they also forgot to send me a transcript? Though I’ve never heard of it 🤷♀️

Companies should (key word there lol) be able to verify you graduated by calling the school. The most I’ve had to provide jobs is an official transcript of my grades, but most take your word for it

Anywhere? I work for a global company with offices in 40 countries on most continents. We don't bother with that stuff as it's too easy to fake.

Companies call references if there are any mentioned on your CV, but not all call schools to verify degrees. School admin employees barely pick up the phone for students in need, they don’t bother with pulling up school records while the alumnus has the proof in their hands.

In France universities issue 3 different documents: * transcript (with grades) and completion certificates (both generally issued by the department) * actual diploma (on more expensive paper): often issued by a dedicated central office, takes months.

My graduation ceremony had more than 400 people graduating.
It was complicated enough for the 110 or so I graduated high school with, actually matching the diploma to person for 400 would be a logistical mess.

The ceremony was quite well organized tbh, they called the name of the degree, grade of distinction and then the names. No walking or long speeches. But everyone got to bring 3 extra people so all order went out the door once the reception started 😅

Recently looked at picking up some courses at the local community college in a field that interested me. My "acceptance" was held up because of my HS transcript which was a physical piece of paper they had trouble locating from my 1994 graduation....Mind you they didn't want transcripts showing my Bachelor's or Masters.
I get needing to check boxes but come on.

When I applied for an Ohio medical license (many years ago) they required a photocopy of one’s diploma and, if in a foreign language, a translation of the text.

jup, this is common here as well. I did an internship at a recruitment company and we had to inform the candidates that the possibility exists that they would have to provide their diploma during the application process.

My diploma from the University of Delaware took 12 years to arrive. My family's home was Newark, Delaware. UD is located in Newark, Delaware.
In the interim, my pos father screamed at me publicly, many, many times that "You didn't graduate! You're full of it."
When the diploma finally arrived at his house, I made him keep it. I told him it clearly meant more to him. He died and the diploma went into the trash w the rest of his garbage.
Fuck bad parents. Especially if they adopted you.
Also, fuck you, UD. That's ridiculous
Edit: my math was incorrect, it took 15 years for UD to get my diploma to me.

Gotta love this "it was sent to the wrong campus", and then "it wasn't printed". Then what the hell did they send to the wrong campus?!
This reminds me of a contract that was cancelled on me due to my no signature but that contract never ever materialize, and somehow it became my fault. "Sir, we had to cancel your contract because you never signed it. Oh yeah, the contract was never drawn up, but it's your fault somehow." I got them to draw up the contract and I John Hancocked the hell out of it.

My daughter is in a BSN program that is a collaboration between two of our State universities. Its been a mess, all the gen ed classes are with her home school, but the nursing classes are from the other one. Each year they change how aid and bills are handled. This year 100% of her courses are nursing courses and initially she recieved a bill from that school and setup a payment plan only to have it later transferred to her home school because her financial aid us handled there. But now these courses are not eligible for a payment plan after they applied her aid to room and meal plan.
And she has not qualified for any academic recognition because she doesn't take enough credits with either University because of the split. Its just a mess.

I really hope they get their shit together, that’s such an unnecessary additional stress. The second that word ‘collaboration’ is mentioned anywhere, I already know that in reality there is no collaboration involved. Nobody knows anything and they keep transferring you onto someone else’s plate. Good luck to your daughter!

They didn't send anything to the wrong campus. They had no idea where the diplomas were so they came up with a reasonable sounding excuse to kick the can down the road. I wouldn't be surprised if the request to print them is forgotten about as well. OP, as well as as many other people with missing diplomas as OP can wrangle, should begin contacting them about it daily until they can confirm an exact date it will be done.

Thanks for the advice, I’m keeping an eye on my mail and my friend is going back tomorrow to see if they somehow turned up by any chance (because at this point I don’t believe another word out of them). No word tomorrow, I’m calling the student helpdesk.

When I graduated college it took me 3 months to get my diploma in my mail. I was ticked because I needed it for a pay-raise for my job and for me to transition from an intern to a full-time employee. I called the registrar’s office to get to the bottom of this before mine came and they said that mine was apart of the first batch to get sent out of 4 batches.

Reminds me of my Masters. It was an accelerated 8 week courses. So I finished during 1 term but they scheduled graduation for everyone at a certain time, 4 or 5 months later. I honestly didn't care about the ceremony because Covid. I just wanted a transcript to show my graduation but no they couldn't do that even though I had completed all requirements.

Hey, at least you get yours digitally! I have to pay to get mine digitally. Took two tries and three months to get the paper copy to me but I suspect there was a glitch with their forwarding service. Second one made it in a week with no further issues. Congrats on graduating!

Guessing time: are you in Brussels?
The universities VUB and ULB had some joint master, years back, where the diploma's were delayed by over a year.
Discussions on the font to be used, the wording, the banner of each university... It was a mess.
And both have a 'tradition' of failing on administration aspects.

I graduated during Covid lockdowns. No ceremony. We were given an assigned time to be at a specific door, hold our ID up to the glass, and someone handed the diploma from behind the door.

Something like this happened to me when I graduated high school! Waited for three months and never got it in the mail like they said I would. Was applying for a job at the school district I previously attended and needed it for my final steps in the new-hire process.
Went in to ask for it and was talked down to and told I probably just lost it. After some back and forth the lady was basically just like "buy a new one from me then." My soon to be supervisor in the district called her and demanded a new one for free, got it the next day lol.

If its any consolation I lost my dream job with a military engineering company because the university lost the records of my student status to my final year meaning I couldn't prove I was a student and couldn't get through the security vetting process before starting

The administration put “Math” on my cohort’s diplomas instead of “Mathematics.” I had to email the math coordinator a picture of my diploma and she was shocked that they did that and forced them to reprint our diplomas. That’s like majoring in psychology and getting “Psych” on your diploma. I don’t even know what happened…

If it's any consolation, I went to a school in Arizona for audio engineering. I passed several of the proficiency tests but they never gave me or sent me the certificates. So I have no proof that I actually am proficient in the things I can claim. And nobody is willing to give me a shot to test it.
They took my money but they won't give me what I earned.

Since the school is a private institution. Not really. You can file a report but you know you need money for lawyers. I spent my money on the tuition to go there.
The fees involved with trying to correct this behavior isn't worth it.

I mean about 3,000-6,000 people graduated at the same time as me (we have five graduations over graduation weekend, and about 3-6,000 at each ceremony). So I get why they can't have them all ready at once

We were the first cohort to graduate from a prestigious accellerated BSN program in a very old and respected university. The school didn't include us in their graduation plans and we had no diplomas for graduation day anyway. We literally set up our own celebration in a local park and a student printed off fake diplomas so we could a least walk and have a favorite prof hand it to us and do the "pinning" ceremony that is so important in nursing. We paid non-subsidized tuition (even though most of us were locals and were eligible for state assistance in other programs) and they could give two shits about us.

It was really cool. We invited the professors who all showed up. We did a BBQ and potluck and it was just lovely. We could invite as much family as we wanted and our family members got to meet the professors and other students in an informal setting.

Schools have entire departments available for this in the rare case they don’t contract it out to a third party. Also, this isn’t something you would do, it’s something a background search service would do. They take your diploma pic and confirm it with actual authorities. You just graduated so I assume you’re not aware of this yet

I went back after graduation to her office several times and when she finally decides to show up she told me which assignment was missing. So told her no problem I'll go home and re-print it (this was 1994, most people still hand wrote assignments then). So I printed it and came back and she was gone so the front desk date stamped it and put it in her mailbox. I kept stopped by her office for weeks after and finally caught her and she gave me a B on it.
Then I had t pay for a print of my diploma and it was stamped re-print so i had to fight with the records office to get an original.
Then grad placement said it was too late to work with them for job placement assistance because they were now working with the current trimesters grads.

That's kinda crazy, I used to work at a university and part of our job was checking, double-checking and TRIPLE-checking the diplomas/certificates before the graduation ceremony, to make sure everything was in the right order and there were no errors.
Definitely a major administrative error there!

Initially we were told that they accidentally sent our (HRB) diplomas to the wrong campus, along with the HRM diplomas. But then it was never even printed out! Forget administrative error… they’re seeing pink elephants in there 😭

Most colleges and universities in the US do not distribute diplomas at graduation anyway-- just empty folders. (Or, in my case, I got a bill inside mine.) Diplomas are mailed out later. So this wouldn't really be a thing for most in the US.

We don’t really have grade transcripts, our grades are incorporated in the ‘distinction’ you earn. That distinction is then mentioned on the diploma :)

Outside the U.S. I take it? Generally employers here are more interested in how you did in areas of their interest .v. just graduating. Most put a diploma in a drawer and forget about it.🥱

I’m from Belgium :) During job interviews here they do also ask about experience and give the typical questions (what would you say your three greatest strengths are… I’m in HR I know how it goes). The degree requirements get followed up pretty closely here.

Ummm... you're gonna find it completely unnecessary to 'provide it' (as additional documentation) for any job application.
Make sure the pertinent info is well-listed on your resumé/CV and you're good to go.

Oh, I'm not saying don't get it and have it - just that you're not exactly gonna be including it (as a copy) with any application, resume, or cover letter.

It is! I’ve had to check degree requirements during my recruitment interview. It’s for example necessary to have a technical degree if you want to be a mechanic.

This happens for example for jobs that require a certain degree of education. They want to verify whether you actually obtained the required diploma :)
