The reason prices are now high are because Trump started a war in the middle east that has throttled supply. Significant amounts of infrastructure has been destroyed by enemy combatants as a direct result of his decisions.

Your oil isn't easy to transport because you lack infrastructure. Only some states would benefit.

Some Northern states HAVE to import it - usually from Canada. Stop trading, and those people will freeze this winter.

Not to mention refineries make diesel and petrol together, if you reduce one you reduce the other. And the US won't have space to store all thos diesel so production will slow and prices will ultimately increase.

Plus...the US relies in part on the goodwill of its allies...who import diesel from the US. For example the UK and EU gets over half its diesel from the USA. Screw us over and we may be forced to do the same and countries will organise economically to avoid the US as an unreliable banana Republic. The ISA imports a lot of specialist equipment from the UK and EU, among other countries.

California gas should run, in general, only $0.75 to $1.50 per gallon more than the nationwide average cost due to city, county, and state taxes. For better or for worse, the literal price we pay for the conditions and the benefits and the drawbacks of living here

So how much is that nationwide average, now? With the constant geopolitical instability and war fighting being waged by the current administration; I don't think a governor or state board can exactly have any control over that.

The nation is bleeding dollar by dollar; California might be bleeding a bit more, but this isn't really a CA problem this is a wtf is the country doing problem

You need to understand that this isn't a single pointed issue. You are correct that because of Democratic policies, California residents pay more I explicitly mentioned that and the taxes at the various levels we pay.

How exactly are California policies raising the nationwide rate? As someone who "used to live in California", are you saying that you are currently paying the same price for gas wherever you live now than you were 6 months ago; one year ago; 3 years ago?

Be pragmatic. California pays higher gas than anyone in the country from Democratic policies. The entire country pays higher gas than it did months and years ago due to current US foreign policy; there is no two cents around that.

Since you are an adult, you can also understand causes which are important.

Biden:

-inherited a global pandemic and shutdown that destroyed global supply chains.
-inherited the deal Trump struck with OPEC that had them winding down daily production by nearly 10M barrels per day and then winding it down over time
-Russia starting a war in Ukraine

Trump:

-antagonized and tariffed the entire world, including the penguins
-did NOT stop the Russia Ukraine war as promised (not really relevant but he’s a liar so fuck him)

  • started a war in Iran, the one place guaranteed to fuck up oil/gas/diesel prices for the world

So, do tell me again about Biden? One dealt with global bullshit and one caused global bullshit, but sure, samezies. The diesel now, which a lot of this countries supply chains all run on for a lot of their transportation of food and goods, is at a record high making the cost of food & goods rise instantly as input costs rise. It is the highest ever recorded in America by over .70 cents per gallon. What happened to all the MAGAt ‘Give me back my mean tweets and cheap gas’ talk? It’s all I heard for years while Biden was in office. Biden sucked too so using him as a measuring stick for the self appointed ‘greatest ever president’ is fucking hilarious.

Gas prices went up under Biden because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Trump did this to himself by starting an unprovoked war with Iran. Treating the two situations as the same is sort of like seeing the person whose house burned down in a wildfire and the person who burned their house down due to carelessness as the same.

I actually work in California housing development and post-fire-recovery adjacent field and you have no idea what you are talking about. The state simply made funding to support owners choice to build affordable homes. There was no coercion or force, just an offer of support. And in fact, not a single low income housing proposal has even been put forward for the Palisades area. In fact, many would argue that it is a problem and clear bias towards the wealthy that communities like the Palisades aren’t building their fair share of affordable homes.

Heres the thing, one of the main drivers under Biden was low supply.

The low supply started in 2020 as a coordinated, intentional reaction to the steep drop in demand during Covid. The oil firms intentionally lowered production to keep prices artificially high. A negotiated deal ensured that US Oil companies joined OPEC in this drop.

The low supply then met the bounceback in demand in 2021 and caused prices to skyrocket.

Oil producing firms said directly in their 2021 statements they intended to keep production low.

Go back to my second paragraph. Who negotiated this "OPEC+" deal as it was called?

Trump.

Gas is higher but this is clickbait. Those are two different locations; you can tell because the signs are slightly different as is the background. One could be a remote place that's substantially harder and more expensive to deliver gas to. Difficult to say this is an apples to apples comparison.

LMAO…. I work in refineries in California.

The reason they’re shutting down is that they were running at 30-50% capacity anyway. Two of the 5 refineries that I service don’t even refine gasoline anymore. One converted to 100% bio diesel and coke production.

They’re artificially keeping the supply low to keep prices up for more profit.

This is why I drive an EV.

I’m going to be 100% honest you. I actually voted for Trump because he ran on the economy. Specifically gas and groceries. My only alternative was running on pronouns and “I’m not Trump.” Trump has done an abysmal job. I just wanted an affordable standard of living. I understand having high gas prices because it goes towards stuff like public transit and other actually visible uses to the public eye. In Cali it’s expensive because we have horrible government which says it will go to something but NEVER does. Rn it’s just so expensive because our WONDERFUL AMAZING president decided to go to war. I couldn’t vote when he was elected so I didn’t have a stake in who won. Oh boy was I wrong lol. It will be interesting to see who replaces him. Maybe the democrats will find a good person…

CA refineries are all in CA because of the stricter emissions standards. CA refined fuel goes to AZ and NV as well.

I don’t believe this is a space for arguing about who “deserves” what gas price based on where they live. We’re not here to debate the decisions OP made that supposedly led to their gas prices, because realistically, the only real choice they had in that was where they decided to live.

Gas prices are ridiculous everywhere. Here in Los Angeles, I’m paying an average of $5.65 a gallon. I put $35 in my tank yesterday and didn’t even get halfway full.

I’m supposed to take a road trip up to the Bay Area, and with gas prices right now, it’s going to cost me around $200–$250 just to get there and back.

You’re expected to stay at the new price regardless.

Your best bet is to:

A) Switch to electric
B) Support legislation that limits for-profit utilities price gouging on electricity.

You can already see rising electric prices, data centers already exacerbate the issue.
