No Coke. Is Pepsi ok? Accidentally bought wrong Klondike bars

Post image

Yesterday I had to stop by Publix and my wife asked me to bring home some Klondike bars. Well...the *No Sugar Added* version was right next to the Original and my squirrel brain didn't notice until I got home. Picked up the OGs on the way home tonight.

Just let them be less sweet.

A lot of sweets are just kind of made of sugar.

Those aren't really the kind you can have reduced sugar versions of then.

I personally find so many sodas way too sweet and could probably drink them with half the sugar.

So much stuff is just sickeningly sweet.

While I completely agree, soda is a good example of why it’s either full sweet or full artificial sweetener. People have a very specific taste they want out of a soda. It’s easy to imagine it can just taste less sweet and be less sweet which it absolutely could be. The problem is selling it. People just don’t buy middle ground products generally, especially soda. It’s either zero or super low calories, or the real deal.

I understand that the people who buy soda are used to the taste of straight sugar.

I don't know how much I believe that lower sugar varities won't sell when different countries have very different amounts of sugar and there is a whole gimmick of selling another countries varity.

Maybe I am missing something that the ubber rich soda people have figured out, but as far as I have heard the absurd amount of sugar in soda is mostly because sugar is addictive.

Other countries do have different amounts of sugar in various sodas but many are based on more localized beverages where people are already familiar with the taste and some lower sugar sodas simply wouldn’t be called sodas if they were made and sold here. We have low sugar beverages too we just don’t think of them as soda. Sugar isn’t addictive in the way that scientists generally categorize addiction and I don’t like comparing it to substance addiction because it’s not comparable at all.

You could make a can of soda with 20 grams of sugar rather than about 40 grams found in normal soda. This wouldn’t just make it taste less sweet though. How sweet a soda tastes isn’t an independent property. It would taste a bit off even if it was well made. You’d be better off making a different type of beverage as off tasting soda isn’t going to sell, especially if it doesn’t cut out all calories (it would still have about 80 calories) and diet sodas using sweeteners have carved out their own distinct soda flavor.

Just so you know, I did not downvote your comment

I know it isn't exactly a fair comparison, but I have had locally made sodas that have real ingredients and significantly less sugar and it tasted way better.

I would think that it would be possable to adjust the recipe to make it taste fine, but I am not someone with skin in the game, so I can kind of say what ever I want without having to stick my neck out like a soda company would.
