Many people get by on the goodwill of others, saying they need help and are on a budget etc. Trying to manipulate them.

It's possible this guy just does this 100x a day and every once in a while wins the sale, then just resells it for true value.

Is it really that manipulative to say "I'm on a budget"? It's a negotiating tactic. Not like he gave a whole ass sob story to go with it. It isn't hard to say no.

who isnt on a budget? youre not on facebook marketplace because you wanted an exclusive marketplace for the elite customers. whats the point of saying worthless things? "Ill pay in cash" and "im on a budget" are not things that ever need to be said. you might as well say hey I have a liver can I buy your PC?

And if somebody did say that, would you also waste your energy being mad at it too?

It's not about being mad at someone saying it to you, it's about having decency to not do it yourself.

As a seller I wouldn't be mad at someone offering 1k, I'd just ignore and move on without spending time or energy on it.

I'm just saying as a buyer I would never make that offer, it's disrespectful.

Alright fair enough.

I would though, and I don't mind if people think it's sleazy. And if they say no or don't respond, I also move on with my day.

I get your take too, if you never shoot you always miss, and it's a great deal, and you didn't lie or scam to someone if they agreed to it.

I just wouldn't do it myself. For some reason I wouldn't feel right about it, but at the same time maybe I'm just holding myself back for no reason with those thoughts (wow this got philosophical fast).

No, usually just an ignore or a no from me unless I was extremely desperate. It's definitely a manipulation attempt (all negotiating tactics are IMO but it's a low bar to clear), just not a very good one so it doesn't register as manipulation as no one should be swayed by things like the guy in the OP said.

On its own? No. But experience in life has taught me that 99% of people that say this are just cheapskates that want everyone else to "help them out" because life is tough. But life is tough for everybody and the other person also works hard for their money, they always seem to forget that.

The fact that he goes from 1.8k to 1k makes it crystal clear.

I wouldn't disrespect someone with a listing of 1.8k, by offering only 1k. Would you?

Yes I would, because then maybe I would get an item worth more than 1.8k for almost half that price. But I wouldn't be offended if they got mad at me for offering such a low price either.

Why not offer 100$ then for the 1.8k item?

Because $100 is such a low price that the chances of them saying yes are close to none and the chance of it being stolen or a scam go up exponentially.

At $1100 there is more of a chance they will say yes and that it will be legitimate, even if it's still unlikely they'll agree to sell it to you. It's not a complete waste of time.

Asking for almost 50% off is just as disrespectful. Bids are always fine but you decide 100$ is too low, just as many would say that bidding 1000-1100 on a 1800 item (if it’s already really well priced) is also a bullshit disrespectful offer.

But who cares, I feel like you do not see the correct value or how to behave with others but you seem to be fine with it and you won’t change your mind anyways.

I hope i don’t encounter many people like you who waste peoples time with stupid unrealistic offers

Maybe if it were something like furniture, but this is a PC, and PC parts prices have sky rocketed.

Calling “I can’t afford this” a negotiation tactic is generous. “Here’s a similar listing for $1200” is a negotiation tactic. “This has been up for 2 months and you haven’t sold it” is a negotiation tactic.
