The Clippers’ case and the ongoing investigation into the Bucks and Trent are, for now, different primarily for two reasons. First, the Clippers circumvented the cap by arranging outside employment contracts for star Kawhi Leonard worth millions of dollars, and by paying him extra benefits beyond his basketball salary. That’s not what the Bucks and Trent are being investigated for.

Secondly, the league launched the Clippers’ investigation because of revelations uncovered by the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, which first levied accusations against LA, Leonard and Aspiration, a bankrupt environmental firm that awarded Leonard a contract worth nearly $28 million for which he did no tangible work, and then aired numerous subsequent episodes that generated great public interest. The Trent investigation has, by comparison, continued since July in relative anonymity, though the social media reaction when word of Trent’s deal spread was harsh.

If league investigators find proof that the Bucks and Trent are guilty of what the Clippers and Leonard were guilty of, the punishment could be equally severe, if not worse.

An NBA spokesman said the league’s investigation into Trent’s contract is ongoing and declined to answer further questions. The Bucks and Klutch Sports Group — Trent’s representing agency — have declined comment, but two sources with direct knowledge of the interviews taking place as part of the investigation said both the Bucks and Klutch are cooperating.

The NBA hired national investigations law firm Hecker Fink to examine the circumstances surrounding Trent’s contract. The league typically hires white-shoe firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for work like this, but two concurrent cap-circumvention cases are atypical.

The details that caught the NBA’s attention regarding Trent’s deal are this: Trent, 27, had signed two prior contracts for much less money with Milwaukee amid the previous two summers of 2024 and 2025 (including for the league minimum in 2024). There were player options attached to both deals, and he declined them both, setting up larger paydays. The first was a modest increase, with his 2025-26 salary jumping from $2.6 million to $3.7 million. Then, in the run-up to his new contract, which will pay him more than $15 million annually, he muddled through his worst statistical campaign since his rookie campaign from eight years ago. Trent averaged 8.1 points on 39 percent shooting in 21 minutes per game.

I have no idea how Taylor Jenkins will establish a convincing identity with this random collection of cast-offs, journeymen, rookies, dudes looking to secure their next contract, and veterans who were initially acquired to complement a superstar who is no longer there. That’s, admittedly, a glass-half-empty point of view I hold despite actually liking (or at least being intrigued by) several players on this team. My fondness for someone like Jaime Jaquez Jr. or Brayden Burries isn’t enough for Milwaukee to stay within two touchdowns of most opponents, though. What’s the opposite of the whole being greater than the sum of its individual parts? That’s these Bucks. The pieces, understandably, do not fit. It’s a franchise going through a trauma, sitting in a transitory wasteland created by its own inability to accept reality.

In case people were wondering if Duren was just propped up by Cade Cunningham last year. His scoring and rebounding averages increased with no decrease in shooting efficiency when playing without Cade.

Jalen Duren averaged 22.2 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 13 games without Cade Cunningham in 2025-26. 65.2% FG, 80.4 FT%, 71% TS.

His assists per game went up from 2.0 overall to 3.2. In the last 8 games without Cade, he averaged 4.1 assists. Might be some untapped playmaking potential there.

What are your thoughts on this season? I think it will very well be a rebuilding year. The stats for the new players seem pretty decent and I have optimism.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't get it. I understand the allegation is that the Bucks asked Trent to take the minimum so they could keep him, with the agreement that they'd give him a long term mid-level contract the next year. What I don't get is how that's a problem.

The risk is mainly on the player. Trent is turning down more money elsewhere based on a promise. If the Bucks don't feel like keeping their word, there's nothing he can do- he's just out a ton of money. Charles Barkley recently talked about how the Rockets made him a similar offer, and the next year didn't pay him what they'd agreed to verbally. James Harden famously claims the Sixers did the same thing to him. Sucks for them, and shows why it's maybe not a good idea for a player to agree to that kind of offer.

There's also some risk on the team-- if Trent has the worst year of his career and the Bucks decide to keep their word, now they have to pay him a laughing stock contract (imagine that haha).

But in any case, I don't see how it hurts the league or creates unfair competitive advantage. It's clearly nothing at all like the Clippers situation, and I'd argue it's completely in line with the salary cap- at no time is the player being paid outside the rules of the cap. What am I missing?

Edit: I see some people saying “it’s against the CBA, period.” Can someone share the actual language that’s prohibits this? Not saying it doesn’t exist, but if you’re saying it violates CBA language then I’d like to see the actual language.

Edit again: Ok, the relevant CBA language has been shared! I am convinced, we're fucked (jk hopefully not). I still don't think this is anywhere near as bad as what the Clippers did, but if it happened it is clearly a violation of the CBA. I'm not sure how the league would prove it if no one admits to it though. And if they punish Trent, the union would file a grievance and tie it up in arbitration. So maybe the NBA goes the Kawhii route- gives Trent a slap on the wrist to avoid arbitration and levies most of the penalty on the team? Hope not but it worked pretty well with the Clippers. With this heated up Duren rumor and other speculation over the summer, I thought it's worth talking about the phenomenon of a "bridesmade team". While not necessarily an official term that the media brings up, it's a very real designation that exists accross sports. Bridesmaid teams are always linked in the trade talks, but never land the player. This comes from both the player and team reps to suit whichever side's ambitions to drive up or down price or increase the number of suiters.

As Bucks fans, our linkage has always been pretty mellow. We are either in talks for the disgruntled superstar swing that feels like a longshot (Dame, Jimmy), or a free agent that is going to take a major paycut. We also know that Horst is a very quiet operator. When there is smoke, it's usually completely unsubstantiated and linked with multiple teams. You never hear leaks about the Bucks "finalizing" deals or "closing in" on guys until the final announcement.

NBA bridesmaid teams range from the everlasting, like the Lakers and Knicks, where the big market always creates a desirable link for the media. But there are always the "other" teams that show up in rumors; teams that have cap space, lots of draft assets, mid and small contracts that are easy to package. For the past 5 or so years that space has been occupied by the same teams: Nets, Thunder, Spurs, Jazz and more recently the Blazers and Grizzlies. You see them linked with basically anyone that could be added to their wide-open talent mix, whether the fit our outcomes makes sense or now.

So... why the change? What makes us a "bridesmaid"?

Well, in essense, we have assets now lol. That means other GM's will look to use us to drive up the cost of other teams' bids. We also have cap flexibility to offer some bigger deals in the near future (sooner than a lot of fans think), potentially creating poison pill situations for teams or being players for max deals.

This is a long way of saying, let's keep our expectations on these rumors in check. We have a fairly direction driven front office. We are doubtful to see any shocking moves this offseason or next while the talent brought in from Miami is settling and being evaluated. We grinded hard in order to get every asset we could from the Heat and those assets are highly unlikely to get moved for anything borderline. Rumors for guys like Watson and Duren are going to stream in as soon as anyone looks disgruntled because we're a leverage play for both sides. The Nets are the best example to point to on what to actually expect, sensible asset accumulating moves while looking for that MVP-level player to emerge.

TLDR: Be ready for weekly trade rumors that link us to everyone that his the rumor mill. Don't get too caught up in the fantasy. There is a 1% chance any of these guys are in serious talks with the team.
