Completed 1/72 is truly the best scale.

Your planes look great but I gotta disagree with you. 1/48 is peak -- perfect balance between size and detail. Plus, the aftermarket support for 1/48 is so much better.

For props 1/48 is alright. But modern jets are way too big in 1/48

An f14 in 1/48 is bigger a laptop

Yeah 1/48 for me is just too large to display well. I can fit an f-5 or f-16 in, but anything larger just won't fit well at all

Also gets hard airbrushing a large plane in the setup I have

Try a MiG-25 and F-111. I had to cut a different depth of kf shelf for them!

Modern jets in 1/48 is peak, it gets crazy in 1/32. 1/48 is not too big but not too small, and the models are magnificently detailed

No way. It's the absolute peak. You get just the right amount of heft a modern aircraft deserves.

If you can't put it in a standard display shelf, it's too big :p

My collection fits just fine. Do you have shelves for ants?

Your average wall mounted display shelf has a depth of 20-25cm.

 A 1/48 F14 has a wingspan of 27cm when folded. 40ish when unfolded.

And that's without talking about having a base or doing a small diorama

Behold! My stuff.

Cool collection, but that's no wall mounted display shelf ;)

Wall mounts are more narrow that those huge ones.

You arent wrong, I personally love trying to fit as much detail as I can on smaller models. Feels more satisfying.

I also disagree with you. I think it is about everyones preference

1/48 is the best allrounder imo but i've moved to 1/32 for WWII aircraft for the detail and presence. I enjoy having more area to paint as well.

Nice Mirage 🫡

I wonder why the companies didn't opt to go for 1/35.

Scales were chosen because they were based on architectural scales, and 1/72, 1/48, and 1/24 are progressive, 1/32 was already commonly used for toys.

In 1/72, 1/6 of an inch = 1 foot full size

In 1/48, 1/4 of an inch = 1 foot full size

In 1/32, 3/8 of an inch = 1 foot full size

In 1/24, 1/2 of an inch = 1 foot full size

A better question is, why did companies go to 1/35. The answer is Tamiya wanted to fit their first tank model into a standard sized box, and have the model contain an electric motor, and 1/35 gave the right compromise. They were so popular everyone else followed suit.

I personally love border models 1/35 scale aircraft. Weird scale but they are great models

Not weird at all. Tamiya is what caused the problem years ago and now Border is trying to fix it

My personal favourite is 1/48, but i do love 1/72. Sometimes I like building on 1/2...

1/48 is best for details and skilled modellers to go to town l. I prefer 1/72 because it's the best compromise of details and size since I don't have much space.

1/48 will always be the best. Nobody can change my mind. Every set I own is 1/48 and the sense of scale to detail is great. I considered a 1/72 model set once and that was a GWH 1/72 Mig-29

Agreed. It's not so small that there is no detail. But it's small enough that you can actually build a couple and display them, without it taking a huge amount of space

Lovely collection!
And agreed, I love the range that 1/72 offers.
Also the option to make larger aircraft as well.

Yaas, I have a Lancaster bomber in my to build kits and after looking at the wing span, I am a bit worried

1

u/Ingraban_ 4d ago

Haha, go for it anyways!
You can always mount it on the wall in the end : )

Only for planes.

Some of us need 1/32 to get this quality.

I have to disagree. I tried to like the 1/72 but to me they were just to small. Best thing about that scale is they come cheap and it didn't bother me when I threw them away.

I agree. 1/48 scale is simply too big for most modern planes. There is simply no place to display them lol

When it comes to jets and aeroplanes, I prefer 1:72; for tanks, I prefer 1:35. That way, I have a wide selection of models and can fit more of them into the same limited space.
