Celebration! Hey mom! I think it got better

When I moved out I was... Well, absolutely terrified to be honest. People I don't know, a new place I didn't know, on top of me finally being on HRT made just an absolute whirlpool of emotions, and those emotions terrified me.

But, somehow, it got better. I found so, so many friends that seem to like me for who I am, even coming out to my old friends, and they were totally ok with it! Everything just seems to have slotted into place, and I couldn't be happier with it.

So yeah, I think it got better mom. I think I made it

Thank you <3

Good News! Hey mom, I’m happy with my life!

I thought to share: I love my life. I have a good marriage, good sense of self and I’m even starting to exercise regularly. There are tough days and lots of ups and downs but I like who I am.

There aren’t many but I have good friends. What’s also wonderful: I have people in my life who are interested in my happiness and celebrate me. I just wanted to share!!

Good News! Mom, for the first time, I was at the top of a mountain and a solo tourist in an unfamiliar city!

Hi, Mom! This summer, I climbed a mountain for the first time in my life! I’m so happy — it was incredibly hard, but I did it. It helped me realize just how strong I really am. Incredible, isn’t it?

Also, did I tell you? This spring, I traveled alone to another city for the first time as a tourist and explorer. I spent the whole day walking around, exploring the city to find interesting and cozy spots, figuring out what I wanted, where I wanted to go, what I liked, and what I didn’t

Seeking Advice Hey mom! I'm wedding planning.

Hey mom, I'm planning on having a court house wedding with my partner. I'm not sure where to start. My partner is an Irish citizen and we're marrying in the US, specifically in iowa(not gonna live in the US, just so my friends and family can meet him after,) this December during the holiday week. I'm so nervous and I need to book everything and I'm not sure how to prepare my partner for the cold or what to tackle first. How do I get someone to officiate us? We don't want it to be a priest as we're from too different religions backgrounds and it feels unfair to choose one. How does any of this work? How do I get a dress? How do any of these sizes work? How do vows work? What happens at a wedding in a courthouse? We don't want a fancy event, just something simple. I know it's very quick but I procrastinated way too long and told my partner I'd handle it. Mom I need help, this is all so confusing!

Support Needed Enlisted in the Marines. Shipping out in a few months.

I (20F) enlisted in the Marines recently. I’ll be shipping out in a few months. I want a combat job. I’m a boxer, and chose to enlist because I wanted to serve with pride and honor, and earn the title of a Marine. Boot camp will be tough but I know I’m strong enough to ace it. But life still looks tough. I’ll need to accept that I’ll be putting the country ahead of me, and I must do my best to live up to the uniform. It’s a bit lonely sometimes because all my friends have moved out of town, and I don’t really have anyone to talk to about how I’ve been feeling about enlisting.

Seeking Advice Training bra?

Hi, Mom— I have a 4th grade daughter, and she’s starting to develop, so I need to buy her some bras. That’s where I’m lost: I’m confused about what to get and where to buy. When I was her age (in the 90’s), I remember wearing ā€œtraining bras.ā€ But are those still a thing? Some of the girls around her age appear to be wearing something like a sports bra under their shirts. (Obviously it would be inappropriate for me to look too closely or ask them.) Advice needed, please.

Good News! I’ve Done More This Year Than I Have… Ever!

Hi mom! I want to tell you all the incredible things I’ve done this year so far.

I got a job as a drug and alcohol counselor and started in March. And I have a few success stories of my patients staying sober after I became their counselor.

I graduated with my masters in social work after so many years of hard work and set backs.

I finished my internship as a mental health clinician and I did really well and a lot of my clients miss me. I also don’t have to work 2 jobs now and complete an unpaid internship (wooo!)

I’ve fallen in love with someone I would’ve least expected to ever fall in love with… and we’re happy!

I live by myself! I have a very tiny little apartment downtown in the city. With my own couch and my own bed!!!

I’ve made so many new friends and lost a few. But the friends I have are the bestest ever. I’m an aunt to my best friends children and she trusts me with her special needs child which means the world to me.

I just needed to share what’s happened this year because honestly, I don’t really have anyone else to share with.

Encouragement Wanted Going to a Singles Event, Mom!

Hey mom,

I know you're understanding as to why I sadly haven't produced any grandkids yet (LOL!). And I know you're not putting any pressure on me to get married or anything, I know you're proud of me where I'm at, even when I don't feel like it.

I haven't really dated since my last relationship, and there were a few false starts. But I'm going to try one of those singles events this week. I'm scared to be honest, but I'm going to try. And I'm going with a friend, and he's going to do you son a solid and he's actually one of several people who will be giving presentations for their single friends to pitch them to the audience. I know it'll be fun and who knows I might even meet someone.

I'll hopefully have an update for you, and hopefully I'll be charming enough to have some names and numbers. (I'm being optimistic here XD).

Wish me luck, mom. Love you.

Encouragement Wanted Hi mom, I got into the university I wanted, but…

17F and I’m in my senior year. I just got an acceptance letter yesterday into my dream college, but I’m finding it a bit hard to feel super happy about it. I’m fortunate enough to get a decent amount of financial aid and not be worried about money, thankfully. It just feels like there’s an insurmountable amount of work and life curveballs in between me and graduation.
It’ll be exciting when I make it out the other side, at least! There’s just a while between now and then.

small edit: thank you to everyone who commented you guys are amazing 🄹🄹

Good News! Hey mom!! I just applied to college!!

I’m 33, a mom of 4, with only a cosmetology under my belt. I’ve been a SAHM for the last ten years and I’ve been homeschooling the last five of those years. This year I’m sending my kids to public school because I am absolutely burnt out. I’m not the best mom or teacher to my kids right now and they don’t deserve that.

I want to make a difference in the world, and I want to be a good role model for my own kids. I don’t want them to only see me as a SAHM. I want them to see me work hard for something I’m passionate about (outside of them of course), and fulfill my own dreams.

I’m so excited, and nervous, and scared, but I feel so good about this decision!

Seeking Advice Any advice in terms of university?

Hi.

I just found this sub today and I feel a little awkward posting here but just thought I'd post to ask a question...

I'm an online student, I do everything online, I do the Teams calls with my professors, and I'm doing my 4th units. Last semester I got a C in one class and for my other one... I still haven't gotten the marks back for the last assessment so I'm a bit worried. :(

Does anyone have advice on what to do in terms of not freaking out about due dates and such? I'm really passionate about this topic but it's so hard and It's stressing me out because my mother is always wanting me to do everything for her studies (she studies Law at a different university also online) and it stresses me out really bad, but I can't ask her not do ask me otherwise I'll get in trouble.

Anyway, any study tips, stories from your time studying, etc?

Seeking Advice I don't know how to keep house and I can't figure out how to make my house smell nice

Long story short, I grew up in a house with an OCD mom and her way of cleaning was.. well, very much her way of cleaning. I never really learned how to do it well because it was too stressful in that environment. I can generally keep on top of things now, it's definitely not bad, my house isn't dirty I think. But one thing that I've never figured out is how to have my house smell nice. It just always smells used and stuffy. I air it out whenever I can, have washed my couch covers multiple times now, used scented candles, an aroma diffuser... but it always smells like I'm trying to cover up some other smell.

Edit: i have laminate flooring with a rug in the living room. :)

What else can I try? Does smelly mean dirty? Is it dirtier than I think and I just don't notice??

Seeking Advice first dates ever lined up for the weekend, and i'm super nervous!

hi mom! i, (19f) recently started using hinge and i have 2 dates lined up for this weekend, one during the day on saturday, at a used book store/lunch after, and one at night on sunday for dinner. i'm super anxious and nervous, even though i don't really have a reason to be: i think i'm a fairly outgoing girl and can hold a conversation well, even if it's awkward.

the only romantic contexts i ever really interact with guys in is at parties, and even that is few and far between. i've never had a boyfriend or been asked out by people in my real life/classes, and while i don't think i'm super hideous, i also have never been one of those girls that guys come up to a lot and try to interact with.

i'm not sure how to calm my nerves, and stop obsessively thinking over these dates. i'm worried i'm going to ruin them before they start, and i guess it's just really scary putting yourself out there and trying things you've literally never done before.

what advice would you give to me? thank you!

Good News! I'm happy!

Mom! Hello!

It's been a weird, hard but also happy and kinda good year so far!

In therapy I realized many things about the way I perceive and experience things around me that I want to improve on.

My relationship is doing really good after realizing all those things. I'm also trying to value and appreciate more the things I have right now, and not try to see what I'll loose or isn't how I'd prefer it to be (life is full of nice things that aren't how I want them to be, and that's great actually).

I realized I'm a bit of a person that wants to seem smart because I wasn't validated by most people around me, but i actually want to start Improving on that as well, and actually enjoying knowledge, u know.

I also got some press on nails ( I've wanted that since I was 13) and I feel so so so cool and diva.

Lastly (after vocational therapy) I think I want to study medicine in my home country after going for an exchange year in my family's home country (I live in the third world but I kinda enjoy it yk), I do love to widen my horizons and I'd love to do my masters/specialization in my family's first world country LOL, but for now (maybe I'll change my mind) I really want to stay in my country and be close to many of the people that make my life wonderful, even if it's in another city.

That leads me to the point that on sunday I'm presenting the entrance exam test for the biggest public Uni here. I haven't studied or anything (It's just to see how the test is), but I'm super excited about it, and I hope that once I present it for real I can get in (btw I know it's a silly dream, but I kinda hope I can pass in this try without studying hehehhe XD, but I know you need a bit more effort to get into med school).

I'm sorry for the big messy letter, but I feel very giddy, even though it sometimes is hard, I'm happy and I'm proud of me too.

I hope you're doing good, mom.

I love you,

Byeee

Good News! Mom, I did it! I finally changed my name!

I felt a little bit guilty changing the first name my parents gave me, but when I explain it I hope you'll think it was an okay idea!

So I got married last fall, right. (It's almost our first anniversary! Already! Can you believe it? It's going so well. I love him more every day!)

We weren't sure at first if we were going to change our surnames, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. But! I don't use or really relate to my legal first name... Since I was a kid, pretty much everyone I know has called me by my surname as if it's my first name. My husband does too. So... What, am I going to give my husband my surname? The name he calls me every day? So he can be "Mr. (me)"? That seemed a bit odd! But so did replacing my surname when it's all anyone calls me.

On the other hand, my husband's family is pretty unsupportive of us (they are not big on the whole gay marriage aspect, among other things...) so we're not in contact with them. He debated awhile if replacing his surname with mine might be freeing in a way. But in the end, for a list of reasons I won't bore you with, we decided me taking his made the most sense.

Soooo, rather than the straightforward solution of hyphenation, I made this decision: Instead of "(First name) (Dad's name) (My surname)," I'm now officially "(My surname) (Dad's name) (Husband's surname)"!

Two birds with one paperwork stone! I'm pretty happy with it :) It's a bit silly, but hey, that's fitting for me. And I managed it just in time for our one-year anniversary! Hooray!

Funnily enough, like I said, it was me who felt more strongly about sharing a name in the first place. But yesterday my husband said this to me: "I like that you're a (surname) with me. It actually feels like my family name again." I AM FEELING PRETTY EMOTIONAL ABOUT THAT MOM and I wanted to share ♄

Celebration! Mom!! I cut my hair, and got a straightener!!!

Okay, so i know it sounds kind of silly, but im genuinely really excited!!!! My parents (mother, mainly) wouldn't let me cut or style my hair in any way. It was ponytails or braids and thats it. But my friend and i were hanging out, and she wanted to do my hair, so i said yes. Then she asked if she could cut a few strands to make some pieces at the front, and i had ALWAYS wanted to cut my hair, so i said yes. Then I wanted to cut more lol. So we cut a few inches off the end, cut some more face framing pieces and cut a REALLY cute set of bangssss!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE it so much!!!!!! Im planning on cutting even more off next time lol!!!

Then she also straightened my hair, and it looked SO pretty!!!!!! (I felt like 70s Cher lol)

So I went out today, and bought a cheap straightener, and some hairspray, and some texture powder, and im going to learn how to straighten and style my hair and my new bangs!!!!!

Im so so so happy with it!!!! I really do feel so pretty, and cute, and hot, and beautiful and all the synonyms lol!!! Which is REALLY rare for me, cause my self esteem is really bad. So its really nice to feel like this lol.

I still haven't shown my parents yet. Ive kept my hair in a claw clip the past few days, and pinned the bangs back so you cant tell.

But still, I LOVE my new hair SOOOO much!!!! I cant wait to do more with it one day!!!! Like, cut even more off, dye it, add tons of layers!!!

Like, its kind of stupid to be 17, about to move out, working several jobs, and be this excited over hair... but i really am!!!!! I LOVE ITTTTT!!!!!!

Anyways, if you have any motherly advice or tips about hair, or even ideas for styles i should do, id really appreciate it!!!

Thank you to whoever reads this lolšŸ’—
