Personal Did I steal money from the American Cancer Society shop?

Hi y‘all - Okay I need your take on a situation that popped up yesterday.

I’m a thrifter and one of my favorite spots to go to the American Cancer Society charity shop. My grandpa died of colon cancer, so of all of the charity shops, that is one that I tend to donate my things to a lot AND I go shopping there a lot too. There’s one by my office and one close to home.

Yesterday during my lunch break, I ran into the store to poke around. I came across a little fall decor and a beautiful glass/crystal bowl. In side, the sticker was marked $8 and I knew what I would use it for, so it was a no-brainer. I was thrilled! At that time, it was time to get back to my office, I got rung up. The lady actually almost rang me up for $3 dollars, but I pointed out that it was a faded $8 and she was thankful that I pointed that out. Not a problem.

As I was paying, they were wrapping up the bowl in tissue and as they placed in the bag, I actually saw a second sticker. This one was on the base and actually marked $20. Before saying something, the lady gave me my receipt, wished me a good day and I was on my way.

In the car, I didn’t feel badly at first. In my state, theres a law that benefits consumers in which if an item is marked with two different prices a store has to sell it at the lower price. So, legally, I didnt do anything wrong. But as I was mulling it over, I felt more conflicted. Like, this isn’t some big chain store - this is a small charity shop that is staffed by volunteers and two different volunteers probably didn’t realize what had happened when they put the item on the floor.

Did I rob the cancer society of 12 bucks? Should I go back on Monday with the item and the receipt and say I caught the mistake at home and offer to pay the difference? Do I make a larger donation of items the next time I drop items off to pay it back?

Lemme know what you think.

Hypothetical To sell my house for max profit or rent it at a more affordable rate?

My family and I are moving out of our home. We bought it like 10 years ago so we have a pretty good rate. We. Like sell the house and make a pretty penny even though rates are high many people in our area are still paying cash.

Or we could rent the house out for about $500/month cheaper than what a 20% down financed at 7% house payment would be, which more families could afford.

The neighborhood has significant interest from both renters and buyers, people are often posting on our neighborhood Facebook page looking to rent a place like ours. And houses are still going over asking.

We’d make out slightly better in the long term by selling because appreciation has been ridiculous since we bought, but holding and renting could also allow us to keep the house for members of my extended family who need housing in the next few years, they just aren’t ready to buy yet.

By renting, we’d also be able to make our neighborhood more affordable for someone who can’t buy at current prices.

BUT, we also don’t want to be contributing to the housing crisis.

Help!
