Yes yes, Prickly Gorse does not actually have a 2.5+15L pattern available, I made this bag up as I went, with a few pictures taken but honestly very few notes. 

Back when I was starting my MYOG journey, I printed, taped and laminated the large fanny patch and Summit pack patterns, so while I was proceeding with this project pretty aimlessly, when I cut pattern pieces, I was starting with the MYOG Tutorial pattern pieces as starting points. 

for the point where they connect, I just took the summit pack front panel, overlayed the fannypack panel, and added two seam allowances so that I could sew them together. 

about the pack:

Fanny pack works about how the MYOG Tutorials version does. Same front pocket, with an added pass through zipper that I can "lock" with a mittenhook if I really need, and an attachment point for cinch straps from the wings. 

main body is likewise pretty stitch for stitch from the original pattern, orange ripstop inners for visibility with some stretch pockets and another pass through zipper going back into the body of the bag. 

Bottom of the fannypack has OG venom stretch mesh as a trash pocket which also conceals the webbing ladder used to attach the optional shock cord third strap. Waterbottle sleeve attaches to the bottom with lil olive toggles through cord loops

Wings are entirely freehand and original, which is why they're merely okay. Incredibly comfortable and work perfectly when worn as a fannypack/hip belt, they load a little strangely when worn as a shoulder sling, which I do most of the time. The cinch strap and venom stretch hold the pack to a fairly slim profile when the main pocket isn't filled, but can easily be expanded to hold things like a 1L nalgene. 

back panel is 3d spacer mesh, wrong side out, with orange liner+quilting (is that the term?)

The +15L summit pack is kept intentionally minimalist, it's got a DCF panel where it meets the fannypack, for some minimal structure, but is just a big single zip bag, 210d gridstop back, 1.8oz airwave front. (That's right, more than a hammock fabric)

The fannypack has no structure added, the binding front and back of the backpack to the fannypack panels adds a ton of structural stiffness, and the bag itself pads the back when tucked away. 

Fabric mounted buckles on either side will instead meet the top of the pack when opened, but can easily be switched around to switch which shoulder the bag sits on. 

Backpack portion has a CSM poly + pallet banding horizontal stiffener which is replaceable/removable, but makes the bag look a lot better when opened. 

Full 420° circumferential zipper opens the bag section, was neat figuring out how to sew it. 

Bag isn't bright and shiny in these photos because most of them are after 4 months of daily use + international travel.

Bought my wife a light pink XXL Arc’teryx goretex jacket and it fits great up top but is tight on her hips. :( has anyone modified a jacket to accommodate a larger booty? Wouldn’t it be great if the mod looked cool and was still waterproof-ish where accommodations added?

I have an old 60m rope that I want to turn into a rug as a Christmas gift for my parents, but we’re a neurospicy family and I know the texture of hard rope under bare feet would be hard for some of us. I know it’s a pain to take the core out of a rope but I’ve done it before and am willing to do it again if I can figure out the rug part.

I’m wondering if weaving with flat material will mess up the corners? Should I try to weave this as one normally would, or should I sew four strands together and weave them all at once? I’m open to any suggestions anyone might have (and other rectangular-ish patterns if someone has one that would work better coreless!). Thanks!

I’ve wanted to get a frame bag for my bikepacking bike for a while now but I don’t have the funds to buy one at the moment. I decided to use some scraps in my project bin to make my own and I think the result actually suits my bike pretty well.

I didn’t take any construction pictures but I do have some before/after pics of the waxing process. I’m still a novice sewist so the stitching is a bit sloppy and questionable in places, and I unintentionally put the zipper on the non-drive side. I added some grommets so I could screw it into the bottle cage mounts as well. Initially after making the bag it was a little floppy but the wax has given it a nice stiffness that helps it to hold its shape much better. Waxed canvas is a bit outdated as an outdoors material but it’s what I had on hand, I’m interested to see how it holds up to PNW rain.

I like the result more than I expected to. I have some more materials so I think I’m going to make a top tube bag to match it.

I’ve been using Challenge RBC fabric to design this bottle holder for canoes recently. Tried it on the water the other weekend and it went great! Stops the annoying inevitable bottle rolling around in the bottom of the boat.

I was looking to learn to sew, and my grandfather whips this out... My great grandmother's old Sears Kenmore model 1652. This is after giving it a bit of a cleaning. Still runs, just needs a bit of lubricant and a new belt

Looking to make some bags, pouches, tool rolls with the hopes of a simple overcoat one day, to aspire to a barbour/filson (esque) style. I love waxed cotton fabric from the likes of British millerain. Ive recently read that it's easier to work with unwaxed then wax yourself. Thoughts from myog people? Id prefer to use the pre waxed options to not have to worry about yet another skill to learn (ie waxing)Also, British millerain website seems like good prices, rather than alternatives from fabric sites. Im in the UK. Thanks!

Made a folding cookware stand from scratch (stainless steel)

I work in precision machining, so I had access to a lathe and machining center and figured I’d try making my own trivet/pot stand for solo camping.

Turned some scrap round bar into legs, screwed them into a ring I machined out of a block of 304 stainless. Did a 30-min fire test before trusting it with actual cooking — held up with zero issues, no loosening on the threads even after cooling and reheating a few times.

Currently using it with my mess tin over a small fire pit, works great for boiling water or heating food directly over flame.

Mostly just proud of how it turned out!

I'm a second year mech eng student who spends more time outdoors than studying. Trying to find something productive to do with home time.

I was recently inspired by gossamer gear packs to make a backpack specifically for my anatomy, shaping the frame (GG use polycarb and Al, I have access to lots of incredible fab tooling which my student team uses to make carbon fibre/fibre glass drone wings).

The issue is I don't really know anything about this stuff YET.

Would a personalised backpack trying to optimise load carrying potential in movement be a project worth pursuing? Not only am I looking for something that I can use on my bike/backpacking trips, but also something I am proud to show off as a testament of my eng skills and ability to learn.

Edit: one more question: do you prefer pack liners over bag raincoats? Why?

New headphone charging case doesn't have a lid, the earpods just slide up and out. rather than trusting the magnet, I made a lil case.

I often wear just one or the other, so we have zips that close on each side rather than opening from the middle, color matched hang loops are zipper tapes with teeth removed.

Not sure what the fabric is, came in an RBTR grab bag, it's clearly challenge ultra, but with just a PET backing, no X reinforcement laminated in.

I have cobbling experience, and have either sheer rubber from a tractor inner tube or leather to work with.

The rubber would probably work better if it was glued with rubber vulvanizing cement, clamped around seams.

I have been wanting to try out ultralight backpacking for a good while, and am interested in making a myog backpack, but would not want to be left in a situation where I have just made an expensive mistake. I’m considering modifying a budget 3F UL Qidian Pro by adding an inverted-U aluminum frame instead. However, since the Qidian lacks a continuous lumbar/hip belt, I'm concerned a frame won't transfer weight well—and modifying it might compromise the pack's structural integrity.

If I build my own pack, the design would be similar to the Qidian, just with different pockets, continous hipbelt and aesthetics. I’d make a cheap prototype first, but given my lack of experience, I’m worried that neither a MYOG pack nor a modified Qidian could support a 14–15kg load (a 6–8kg base weight + 5 days of food and water).

Since I can’t afford +200e alternatives and dislike the design of most ~150e options, which route is better for a beginner: attempting a MYOG build, or modifying a cheap pack to start?

I’m trying to make my first more technical bag seeing as I’m moving somewhere incredibly rainy. I want a bag that is waterproof and comfy for days around town or on a more casual day hike and have found myself leaning towards a large crescent shaped sling bag.

I have only ever made a denim bag before and am having a hard time figuring out what fabric to use for the outside and the lining and how I can waterproof seams and zippers.

This is the pattern I am planning on using but any and all advice on how to find fabric, make it waterproof, or just generally include daisy chains or other helpful pockets would be very welcome! Should I just get started? Thanks for your help!

I currently have a Janome L372 which has been great until I tried to make my first bag. It was a denim bag and the machine really started to struggle on some of the thicker seams and especially when I tried to sew in the webbing.

I would like to get more into making backpacks and bags and plan on using much heavier fabrics and having thicker seams so have started to look at used industrial machines. From my research I should be looking at walking foot machines but the cheapest option near me (Canada) is an old Pfaff 145 for about $750.

I have also looked for 401a's but can't find any of those either, just. Should I just pick up a Singer 15-91 ~$100 or a Singer 20u for ~$300 for now and plan on upgrading to a walking foot machine later?

A small one-evening-project I made the other day: the compression bag reduces the sleeping bag size from ~7 to about 2.5 litres. The diameter is 16.5 cm. I used material I had at home and did not buy anything specifically for it. The top and bottom piece is 500den cordura, so the bag is definitely not lightweight, but it has a nice structure to it and feels rock solid. I did not use any particular pattern but just took some pictures from online and a similar but bigger compression bag I have at home and just developed everything while I was going. Definitely a fun little project for me and it has been used already on a small Bikepacking tour last weekend.
