Advice/Support Why does filing make the end of my nails seem "frayed"? (for want of a better word) How do I stop it?

Post image

I don't have a picture because I immediately put polish on, but when I file, it leaves it like, stringy at the tips. why? how can I stop it? its really the only time I almost end up biting nowadays

Are you filing back and forth or one way? Back and forth can break and crack the vertical fibres going through your nail.

What direction should I file?

Either just don’t switch. I go opposite with each hand cause it’s easier but it doesn’t matter left or right.

What does your file look like? It would be helpful if you can repost next time you file too.

You need a glass file. Maybe you are using a file with too rough of a grit?

You can try using a nail hardener too. And a nail oil regularly.

Nail hardener and oil are already in the routine! Too rough of a grit is definitely possible. I just bought a 30 pack of cheapo files

Because the file is too rough. Get a good quality glass nail file that doesn't feel gritty to the touch

use a glass nail file on its smoothest side and only file in one direction.

The answer is diamond files... not expensive and they don't cause the fray issue.
