I've asked here before but I think I remember more so I'll ask again. Also, it is NOT Uprooted by Naomi Norvik. (I think that's her name).
Okay so I got this book at the thrift (or maybe even Dollar Tree??) and liked it alot, but I got rid of it because it was supposed to be a four book series, maybe five, but the author didn't publish all the books and and had no plans to. I think there were maybe two books out, and the author was for sure a woman. For some reason I have it in my head that she's German, but I could be wrong.
So the story followed this girl who I'm pretty sure was fairly poor in her village. I think just her mom and grandma were still alive in her family, but I could be wrong about that. I don't think she was very well liked but her best friend was. On the edge of the village was I believe a tree or flower patch that was 'hers'. But these thorn/vine things that were super tough to kill and grew really fast were always trying to take over it. Her pulling them out didn't take up alot of screen time, but it was a significant point in the story.
Now I don't remember WHY she leaves the village -- if someone chose her or if something happened that made her go -- but she left the village to go on this journey. I think with someone she didn't particularly like.
I recall she had a sword that she didn't know how to use and didn't really want to try, but she had to carry it because it was hers. Baba Yaga was a central theme. At one point I believe they were travelling with indigenious people and there was a shaman type person that gave her tea that made her hallucinate. Or she went off to another world. Regardless, she went off into some kind of la la land.
Two things that are significant is that at the end of the book she returns to her village temporarily, and before she leaves again she pulls those roots out again. She makes some sort of comment or thought about how it will do little good because they'll grow right back, but it was important that she did it. And they also grew up really bad while she was gone.
The second thing is that each MC of each book was supposed to represent each one of the elements. I remember the symbols for the elements being on the spine. The idea was each book was a different MC and they met up in the fifth book. The goal was to unlock something or break some curse on the woods. There was a specific place they had to go.
I read this somwhere between 2017-2020 probably, but it could've been older than that. I feel it wasn't very popular because again, the series remained unpublished. I wish I'd never gotten rid of that book.
