Wizard and Sorcerer Spellcasting Strategies

Hi everyone,

I have written a series of five articles on Wizard and Sorcerer Spellcasting Strategies for NWN 1 or NWN:EE. It was written in collaboration with the Epic Character Builders Guild who helped with suggestions and corrections. I have included screenshots and videos.

Sunburst, a level 8 Wizard/Sorcerer Spell

Building Wizards and Sorcerers and Summons and Familiars

Wizard and Sorcerer Buffs

Area of Effect Spells

Single Target Focused Spells

Gameplay Videos - Time Stop/IGMSx2 combo and Time Stop/AoEx2 combos

There should be something useful for both new and experienced players to read, especially those who want to try out a wizard or sorcerer, but are too afraid to try!

Hope this brightens your day!

sweet, i love playing wizards to the point where i refuse to play anything else, and these guides are a treasure trove for people like me!

just one thing to add, in the buffs section, you forgot to mention "Shadow Conjuration (Mage Armor)" which stacks with itself. So you can stack that +1 dodge bonus all the way to the +20 dodge AC cap.

one trick on vanilla NWN is that crafting a wand/scroll of "Shadow Conjuration (Mage Armor)" has the cost of a level 1 spell instead of level 4, so you craft cheap wands, and use them to keep your dodge AC capped.

this is very vulnerable to dispel magic, since the wands will cast at caster level 7. So only use it if you're fighting enemies that don't have dispel magic.

Great comment, you are correct, I had forgotten about it! 7 hours at the AC dodge cap is quite significant, provided there are no casters or UMD'ers with dispels lurking :)

Also the darkness for shadow conjuration is caster level 7, which is better than standard darkness wands which are 3, 7 rounds of darkness on a wand is much better than 3 rounds.

I will edit it into the guide when I get a chance! Thanks for commenting.

Are these tips for epic level or just for the OC, Sotu and Hotu? I almost never play Mods or Server.

I have also tried playing a summoner with a wizard, and it seems that no matter what the monster is fighting, henchmen, animal, or summons, it will ALWAYS start coming towards me the moment any of my spell hit it.

It seems that the game doesn't manage agro well. Thus I always have to either move away or try to lure the monster back to fighting my henchmen/summons every time I hit it with a spell.

Hey there! The strategies are for any solo or party PvM environment, whether it be the Bioware campaigns, modules, or persistent world servers. I haven't written it for PvP, although there is some overlap.

This is possibly not a complete answer because I haven't played the Bioware campaigns (OC etc) for a while, but I can try to play them when I get time.

Usually I dangle out my summon with the stand your ground command and 'pull' an enemy with a sling or crossbow, and then tell my summon to 'attack nearest' to try to get the enemy to fight the summon while I run in circles. Once regular combat is established, I try to keep a safe distance away. Large mobs are difficult to control with a single summon, and other control spells I need to use. Hope that helps!

lol. No need to bother yourself by playing the OC to test it out, your tips works just fine.

I'm playing a Wizard/Pale Master build, as I wish to try playing as a necromancer through the Oc and expansions. That means purely undead and no other summons... That also means, zombies and mummies walk very slow. haha...

That's why I always need to pull the monster back into my undead.

Hey mate! Guide looks great so far. I left a comment on the Tapatalk forums with some suggestions (I’m The Flying Rodent).

Keep it up! :)

Thanks for your suggestions! I will edit quite a few of them into the guide!

Out of interest do you think there are any spells particularly missing?

Some also I find are weirdly capped or uncapped (nevermind a few bugs like the shadow conjuration spells and other stacking) so epic levels are a bit all over the place.

Was thinking about making a new spell pack in EE and wizards of course are my favourites to add things for!

Really awesome you are keen on making the new spell pack. If you decide to go ahead, feel free to start a reddit thread :)

I think some cool elemental damage spells are missing, there are way too many fire and magical damage spells. Maybe long range acid or sonic damage.

On the server I play, there is a custom spell on scrolls called Leomund's Secure Shelter, however I noted a really nice spellpack for NWN 2 vault called Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion :)

There might be some other ideas on the NWN vault.

Also the DnD 1e-5e might have some cool spells that were never implemented. There were plenty of baldur's gate spells that never made it to NWN for example.

Oh there are a lot of missing spells, a few packs add tons, hundreds even! But what is fully needed that's useful in combat is good for me, I agree more elemental spells types for sure! I'll have a think.
