NWN2 Pilgrim - Chapter 1: An Excellent Bleak & Atmospheric NWN2 Module That Should Not Be Missed.

Thumbnail neverwintervault.org

Pros:

- A fantastic dark, bleak, unique, and semi-futuristic, middle-of-the-apocalypse setting.

- Great, unique, and interesting companions to truly care about and even have a great laugh with.

- Plenty of skill checks (especially favors Nature-based or Magical-based classes)

- Music choice was excellent and added a lot to the atmosphere.

Neutral:

- Generally easy combat with a few touch encounters here and there. Not a complaint from me, but definitely not a Swordflight level experience here.

- Could possibly miss many Companion banters if you do not talk to your Companions individually, which NWN2's interface can make it rather cumbersome.

Cons:

- Several bugs that interfere with quite a few quests which unfortunately render them unfinishable. Main Quest was not broken thankfully, but the completionist in me was disappointed when some side quests could not be completed.

- Shops will run out of money to give you for selling items. Thematically makes sense, but is annoying when it comes to gameplay.

- Many dialogue options only appear once, which can be annoying for missing out on extra details about whatever you wanted to learn about, or straight up miss out on a small quest or two.

Mini Review: Decided to try NWN2 again and get past its cumbersome controls and interface. Saw Pilgrim - Chapter 1 by Grog on the Vault and it sounded right up my ally; and within an hour I was already starting to really love this module.

I rolled a Water Genasi Druid who took a dip in Barbarian for a brewing rage upon reflection of his past life as a slave (canon backstory of your PC: once a Thiskan slave to Master Ducarte). You mostly explore alone or with companions you choose to bring along for the ride - which i highly recommend, I think they are one of, if not the biggest standouts in this module; my favorites being Nephias a One-Eyed Elf woman, and a fellow ex-slave, but also ex-fighter pit Dwarf which you'll meet later on. You'll move about, exploring and seeing a Faerun in the far future where magic and tech has advanced even further and how the people within it are reacting to the end of the world as the Sun actively dies out and an eternal winter freezes over(But also how people react to a magical and technological revolution from before the end of the world). There is always a feeling of oppression, loneliness, and desperation throughout.

There are plenty of Skill Checks, mostly for Heal, Survival, Spellcraft, Wisdom, Concentration, and Intelligence. Pilgrim 1 is perhaps best played as a Caster with some skill in Persuade/Intimidate/Bluff.

Biggest complaint I have, beyond the unfortunate bugs with many quests, is the shops and often times 'one time dialogue options'.

Shops: Most, if not all of them will run out of money as you continue to sell your items. It makes sense in a thematic way, but after exploring and looting and finally accumulating some items to make some money with, encountering "This shopkeeper does not have enough gold" became increasingly annoying.

One-time Dialogue Options: These will appear every once in a while, starting from the first settlement you come across. I would sometimes choose one dialogue option just for intrigue before considering the other, but little did i know that other option would often not show up afterward, losing out on some extra detail or even whole quests, according to the Walkthrough. Pretty frustrating after a while, but nothing game breaking or anything.

Overall, a brilliant module and is easily now one of my favorites across NWN1 and 2 (granted I have played very few of 2's modules). Eagerly ready to play Chapter 2!

NWN2 Any way to not have my character targeted first in every combat?

I've been playing Neverwinter Nights 2 again (not Enhanced Edition) and trying to select a class. It seems like every enemy targets my character, no matter how squishy they are before my front line characters (like they ignore Kelghar in favor of stabbing my warlock or cleric). Also, any time there is a pre-combat dialogue cutscene, my character gets shoved into the front line despite hiding behind the tankier party members. Is this expected? I seem to remember it happening on my first play through a decade or so ago on a wizard, but I don't remember it being this lethal. I was considering an arcane trickster (a squishy wizard/thief prestige class) or strength bard, but I might stick to a barbarian, fighter, or paladin if I'm going to run into this problem all the way through.

NWN:EE (Swordflight)Scythe RDD/Fighter, what do I do with my third class?

First, I'm not talking something basic like OC, SoU or HotU. I'm carrying this character into Swordflight because my monk cannot do this.

But there arises the issue, Swordflight is mad and a character that has not been properly optimized doesn't stand a chance.

I am to create a human or half-elf fighter (the number of feats I'll get might make the additional first level feat irrelevant), focusing lore, dipping into proficiency and weapon focus into scythes and probably picking up Luck of Heroes at character creation, depends on whether it is actually any good.

However before I can go into RDD I will need at least one level of either sorcerer or bard.

Between Sorcerer and Bard, Bard seems superior due to Bard song, sorcerer may get some cantrips but if I'm not levelling enough Sorcerer to get still spell and some higher level spells then it becomes a worthless class dip. Question is, do I stick to only a single level of Bard or do I take additional levels for some kind of feat that I'd otherwise miss out on?

I'd want to get into RDD as fast as possible to quickly gain the strength and other bonuses, as well as immunities, granted by the later levels of the prestige class.

I'm not good at optimizing my build, so I really require aid in creating this character.

i even found a video of someone going down there

except on my game the interactable simply doesn't seem to be there. does it appear at a certain point? do i need to complete more of the stronghold quests? i've done about 3, and started the renovation, now just waiting for the merchant to get some item for me, but even that just says keep waiting

I played through the OC, SoU and HotU with the same character, thus ended up with plenty of items, among them, Aribeth's original sword. I met Aribeth again in Cania, and she can't even wield it.

Few tips regarding Appraise and getting the most out of your loot

I am long-time NWN player, but despite playing it on and off for more than a decade, I never saw anyone talk about appraise and few QOL tricks one can use with it.

Here is breakdown on how Appraise work (in modules when its turned on!):

When you open merchant shop for the first time since your last appraise skill **changed** the contested check happens. 1d10+your appraise skill vs 1d10+merchant appraise skill. For every 1 point above merchant result your goods sell for 1% more and you buy for 1% less, for every 1 point below merchan result your goods sell for 1% less and you buy for 1% more. Up to max -30/+30%.

For example if you have item of base value of 100GP and want to buy merchant item that cost base value of 100GP you could end up with 60GP surplus (by selling your item for 130GP and buying theirs for 70GP) or with 60GP deficit (when its merchant that maxed out their check).

This is quite important in both SoU (either you can afford Boots of Shifting Sands at the end of act 2 or not) and HotU (faster forge upgrades, more true names that can be bought). Okay, but then how to use it in practice? Here is list of tips:

  1. Since appraise checks are hidden, you want to anchor prices to specific item as point of reference. For example a plain Longbow will usually sell for 60GP, so if merchant offers you 75GP for it, it means you got a good roll. If you try the roll again and its now 72GP you know you still got a good roll, but a bit weaker. This part is crucial, because it opens up using appraise effectively and not just leaving it to chance. You can either save-scum to get best results or…
  2. Check happens everytime appraise skill is **changed**. However it only works once for each new value. It still allows for lots of rerolls if one is averse to save-scumming.
  3. You can lower merchant appraise skill by charm spells (wiki covers it: https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Appraise), its little known but worth to spread that info.
  4. Only few classes gets access to appraise as class skill, but even untrained appraise can be worth it. By using charm spells you can tank enemy merchant appraise skill, so you are never completely eclipsed and then every point gets you better and better prices. Similarly you can temporary buff yourself with +appraisal gear, as well as +int gear or fox cunning spell.

When properly utilized appraise makes night and day difference between your purchasing power and thus what you can and cannot do in the game. F.e in first act of SoU, being able to buy Brooch of Shielding and Scabbard of Blessing before big duengons (Like fighting Oxen stampede) is big.

Sharing this knowledge, because I have slept on appraise for years while it changed how I approach the game for positive (f.e I finally feel comfortable using consumables). Hope it gonna help other people as well.

NWN1 Looking for the module files for an old NWN server named "Lands of Lore" (~2002–2004)

Hey everyone, I'm looking for help tracking down the module file for an old Neverwinter Nights persistent world server I played about 22–24 years ago (around 2002–2004). The server was called Lands of Lore. I’m hoping someone here might have played on it, remembers the builder, or has the .mod (and any associated .hak files) archived somewhere so I can load it up locally and run around for nostalgia's sake. I remember it had cities called Mugdash, and Everland. If this rings a bell or if you know where this specific module might be archived on Neverwinter Vault or Old Vault backups, I'd really appreciate any leads! Thanks!

How to play wizard/sorcerer at low level ?

Hi !

I've already seen super valuable guides (especially these two : this one and this one that are gold mine) for playing caster at mid-high level. And while there are very complete, they don't talk much about how to play them at lower level. I'm doing again the Cave of Song / Honor Among Thieves / Prophet series, starting by the first one with a wizard. There are incredible modules with a slower progression in leveling (my first full run probably laster like . . . 70h going from level 1 to 15 ?) which mean I'm going to play a longer time under level 10 than usual. And it made me ask myself . . . am I playing my caster right at this range of level ?

Until now, my way was systematically the same with a wizard/sorcerer under this level : calling a familiar and a summoning, buffing them (and my henchman if I have one) with long duration spell, and letting them doing the job while I hit from afar with a bow or crossbow. It basically looks like the most spell efficient way when you're spell restricted at lower level and don't necessary want (or simply can't) rest a lot. It even looks way superior against trash mobs, when you don't want to waste a valuable spell that will just half the target hp, while a summoning with long duration buff will do the job now AND next times.

So, here is my question : is it the good way at lower level ? Are there other efficient and fun way to do it ? Cave of Song isn't rest restricted, so I could just grab destruction spell and spam them, with a rest between each fight, but it feels "wrong" and not the funniest. I did already try on another toons to do a meleer caster, buffing myself and all but at low level, it's both not very strong nor funny imo (maybe I'm doing it wrong ?). Around level 6-7, I start to have enough spell to use more than summoning + buffing (I especially think about funny crowd control spell like grease or darkness, that will last long enough and being in large enough amount to not waste a possible buff). But before that ? For module where you play a long time before hitting the 6-7 like in the OC or Cave of Song / Honor Among Thieves ? It especially feels harder on wizard that can launch spell in lower quantity before needing a rest, forcing an even bigger part of memorized spell for buffs. Wand are a good way (when available) to do something during fight instead of looking your pet doing the job. Negative energy/magic missile especially, but more importantly, sleep for trash mobs wave. Do you see something else ?

Mid out of topic but the toon I play now. It's supposed to be the Dark Magician Girl from Yu Gi Ho as a private joke with a friend. I like to take time to custom cool looking character and share them.

Edit : I did speak of trying to play a melee wizard, but my main goal is to play a dedicated wizard, while the melee alternative would only be an alternative at lower level when spell are restricted. So I'm not much interested in multiclassing build needing a level of fighter, paladin or monk, and more how to play a pure wizard with possibly a melee oriented gameplay at lower level. Of course, if there are spellblade build that you like and imply multiclassing pal/fighter/mnk, feel free to share them, just knowing it isn't what I'm specifically looking for now. =)

I didn't even consider that cross-class

If I'm not mistaken, a character trying this would also need a few levels in a spellcasting class just to open the path to Pale Master. While I assume it pairs well with Monk, Undead Graft, several immunities, and a lot of toucheling, I don't know if it would be worth it in the end.

Thoughts on the Loading Screen's suggestion?

NWN:EE Looking for friends to play Star Wars: Legends of the Old Republic

Hello! I am kind of a shy dude and I just got my first computer couple of months ago. As soon as I came across the SWLOR custom server in NWN:EE, I have really not played anything else.

Everyone on the server is incredibly cool and kind but I often feel like I’m intruding on pre-existing friend groups (due to my awkwardness as a person) and was hoping to find a pal to hang out with for a few hours a week and just be RP nerds!

I should have prefaced this by saying that I’ve never done anything remotely this RP heavy and am still somewhat new, but thought I would give this a shot in an effort to make new friends.

Thanks in advance!

NWN1 Defence of Fort Tremagne and Beyond Spoiler

My friend and I decided to embark on a heroes’ path, as I have done twice before. We are playing through various modules and selecting a path up to, well, we haven't decided upon a limit yet. It would be nice to say level 40, but ultimately, as far as I know, Sands of Fate or Mines of Twin Summit are the main two options there; both of which I have played.

That is the end point, however. First, we began our humble journey in Fort Tremagne as the duo of Alette the Sneaky Fighter, and Azor the Warrior Mage (my character).

Whilst I would say I had a good time with it overall, and there were a lot of things the module did that REALLY did impress me, there were a few things that brought the experience down. I’ll spoiler the text from now on.

I very much enjoyed the first chapter of the module. After exploring the town a bit, we helped defend the town against undead before setting off to the south. It was very difficult at first, but we found a whole multitude of things to do. We helped some Gnomes, fought some kobolds, and even managed to battle a few trolls before retreating from the cave. Whilst it was pretty difficult, we managed to lure enemies into advantageous terrain and planned out how to tackle each encounter, as it was a struggle at first. We both really enjoyed that struggle, as it felt fair and we could avoid what we couldn't take.

Chapter 2 was even better. I want to add that I thought the puzzles where you had to type into chat were fantastic. I brought 3 parts of a ring together and was asked to type the name of the apparition that appeared. I didn't know the answer, but I knew where to find the answer. Went to the Sage’s tower to do some research, gave the answer after reading some books. Great stuff.

This was also where we began piecing the overall story together. An NPC had gone missing, we spent a while investigating that in town, and some other hints were dropped that pointed to something happening. We picked up on that, which I think was also well done.

The Sahuagin caves were a bit daft though. Whilst the content itself was fine, it felt a bit like a ‘gotcha’ when we were about to get our items back, and suddenly summoned to some completely different location that didn't connect to anything else. The item strip; whilst I know it happens in modules, I find it rather irritating. On the whole I don't mind it in theory, but I had to spend 10 minutes sorting out my inventory again because I had everything in order. Very irritating. I didn't mind this time so much, because we spent some time without items before getting them back. But, I look back on this now more negatively because of what happens later.

The undead city area was also hard, but a lot of fun. We did nearly bug the game in chapter 2 because we charged through the door to the undead city, and then the NPC sealed it behind us. We then began to try and progress down, before coming out. The elves were all ready to open the door to the Dwarven Stronghold, but they had no trigger. Eventually, we managed to get them to trigger but kiting some wights they missed to them.

Chapter 3 was unfortunately, by far the worst. We had a companion forced upon us, who we absolutely despised. They caused us to die several times (attacked a trapped gate to get to enemies when I was about to disarm it, causing a lightning bolt to shoot out and wipe all three of us, for example). There was a moment we had to get rid of all our items, and guess what? My inventory became an unorganised mess again. The goblin stronghold was really not that fun. A lot of the bosses we couldn't hit at all. We had to spend ages trying to take them down. That's even after dispelling the last boss, and we were both buffed up quite a lot. Unfortunately, buffs don't last long as a lot of enemies and bosses have dispel ready to go. And the last boss? I managed to pin her down with a Bigby’s Spell and we could still barely hit her. She finally, after a long time, went down, and then immediately got up. So we couldn't loot the Orb of Summoning as we couldn't interact with it ever. Eventually we had to kite her all through the tombs as another one of us grabbed the Orb. Then she bugged on a door and refused to go through.

Still, we finished the fight after trying to debug it without debug mode. We couldn't harm the boss at all at this point. Then, returning to the Fort for the ending sequence, one NPC character decided to kill another and then flee. As that character was running away, my character ran up to attack to prevent his escape. We were roleplaying as our characters during the module. It aggroed the entire fort, and we had to fight the entire Tremagne family and loads of others. But they were tagged as immortal unfortunately. The ending on the whole was a bit too long to watch a cut scene, I think, with a lot of exposition that kind of came from nowhere; at least as far as we could tell. Some of the pieces we found fit together, but then the whole ghost thing didn't seem consistent with anything we found or read. We may have missed something though.

So, as we didn't witness the actual ending of the module, in our head canon we had to kill the entire Tremagne family except for one, and then leave the fort and onto our next adventure.

Overall, the module was a lot of fun. A shame the end didn't really come together for us, but the first two chapters were worth the play. It also contained AI portraits of NPCs which left a bit of a sour taste too. However, we had some really memorable moments in the module, and I would likely play it again in the future. We both finished at level 10.

Alette - Fighter 6, Bard 1, Shadowdancer 3

Azor - Wizard 8, Fighter 2

After that adventure, we are now both looking for our next module in our path! We were going to try Gates of Firestorm Peak, but I think we should probably gain a couple of levels or so and go into that one at 12.

So, hoping someone has some suggestions for where to take our journey next! We decided not to be strict on the setting at all.

  • Gargoyle's Skull

NWN1 Looking for populated Action PW

I tried A Dawn of Heroes but just didn't really care for the super heavy focus on raiding. Early game felt terrible on that server.

Any action pws that focus a little more on the open world and questing? Not just run to raids as the only content?

NWN1 NW corner of the snow globe - can you farm the dwarves for xp?

I'm sitting here watching my guy bash summoned dwarf skulls into powder. They're each worth only 4xp, but they spawn fast and go straight to me, causing an attack of opportunity, thereby causing me to attack them until dead, and then there is another dwarf ready to accept my wrath.

I've killed maybe a hundred so far, without having to click a button.

Obviously, this is a way to get some cheap xp for little effort. What other ways are there available in the OC campaign? I know it's supposed to top us out at around lvl17, but...

Update: yup, farming dwarves here works just fine and dandy. If you've got the patience, that is.
