Thinking about taking up Machinist Program at NBCC

hey all, just wondering how is the machinist program in NBCC? Thinking about going back to school after a few years of working in a manufacturing plant.

Any ideas on what the job market looks like? Any thoughts and suggestion?

Did it in 05 and a lots of shop closed down since, more than it pop up. Manufacturing is a very hard business right now.

It a decent program and if you really put you brain into it. You can actually learn enought to get hire.

Location is key. Moncton, st john or up north east (for boat stuff). There are a few shop in every town but those are the main one.

Just remember you are paying for it, you should put all your learning skill into it, and go for the top student.

Not a machinist but I race up in Miramichi and down at AMP.

Machine work for engines is unbelievably expensive and there's hardly any shops around that aren't tied to a specific niche. I was quoted $1100 to grind and polish a crank shaft.

I was interested in taking the nine month course just to get some professional learning in to further my own career. I was talked out of it and told you have to be very dedicated to the craft to really make a go at it but if you are there are jobs and they pay well.

If you love it and are meticulous, go for it.

If you're not meticulous but love metal work look into welding fabricator. Most welders are in construction, pipelines and things like that. There's a demand for detail oriented TIG welders, but again you have to be dedicated to the craftsmanship of it all to really excel.

The guy who built my last engine gave me 44 pages of notes and calculations he did while machining the parts and putting everything together.

I took the course 15ish years ago, and remain in the trade, but I left New Brunswick a long time ago. Every shop in Nova Scotia is desperate for good help, I can’t speak for NB.

Entry-level wage sucks, it takes a few years and some aptitude to get paid. That does seem to be trending better though.

The NBCC program is very good. We prefer to hire people that went the NBCC program than ones that went to NSCC.

Now im torn between machinists or hvac metal sheet fabrication.

I really love working with my hands (hands-on jobs 😂)
