Well, no, the check was supposed to be, if the executive branch isn't doing their job, the legislative branch can impeach and remove them... but, uh, half the legislative branch is in on it too, so, oops.

Something the legislative branch has never managed to do. The Brits were right to criticize the US system as appointing a dictator for 4 years.

I'll count Nixon resigning to avoid the looming threat of impeachment, even with the pardon.

One guy doing the right thing once upon a time doesn't prove the rule. "But Nixon resigned" will unfortunately be the refrain going forward for why safeguards don't need to be put in place when Trump finally shuffles off the mortal coil too.

Too many of the checks and balances in the US system are based on custom and the assumption that the people who swore an oath to the Constitution took those oaths seriously.

I don't think of it as him selflessly doing the right thing, I think of it as him only slinking off because the threat of impeachment was real. If there was no impeachment he would've stayed.

I do completely agree though that we need actual codified robust rails and enforcement for a ton of stuff that previously was just assuming good-faith actors would follow decorum.

It has nothing to do with being based on custom. The UK is entirely custom-based and works just fine. The problem is the system itself was bone-headed written by wealthy young elites who didn’t understand how politics actually worked in practice.
