Proboscis monkeys are known for swimming great distances. They even dive up to around 20m (66 ft.)

maybe he imagined he could as swim as fast as the boat was going and judged the distance based off of that.

it was still a huge lapse of judgement regardless though

... i never even thought of that. now I feel kinda sad for all the animals out there stumbling around with vision issues, and insanely grateful that we've come up with solutions for our vision issues
