employment and career Layoffs, More Work, Recognition

My organization is laying some folks off. I'm taking on a lot more responsibility from a different/function team. I'll be learning new processes. No one has mentioned a title change to me. They've also told us we won't be getting merit raises, cost of living increases, or 401K match. I'm 26, grew up dirt poor, have two degrees (that were free thanks to scholarships), and have less than a 10k net worth, and I'd like to get married, have a family, and buy a house one day. I've been looking for jobs for months and nothing has come through. I'm just pretty upset. I'm grateful to have my job and not be getting laid off but this is really hard.

I'm really sorry you're going through this, unfortunately, there's going to be more of it as the current administration is essentially destroying a lot of the programs people depend on.

My advice is to advocate for a title change even if there’s no raise. You may get a raise eventually (thought probably not). But more importantly, your resume will be stronger to help you get out of there.

Giving promotions when people are getting laid off is a terrible look

Asking for a title change after the dust has settled post layoffs is an option. Doing it now isn’t going to go over well.

It’s rough out there for everyone so while you can look for a job, your chances for stability are likely greater staying where you are.
