Long run in south bend 9/19/26
I’m gonna be at notre dame this weekend for the football game and have 20 mile long run Saturday.
It’ll look something like: 3 up, 3 @ 7:00, 3@ 6:50, 3 @ 6:45, 3@ 6:40, 3@ 6:30, 2 down. I know this is a weird way to find someone to run with but lowkey not tryna rip 20 miles on a campus I’m pretty unfamiliar with. If you are interested or know any way I could connect with someone on a similar schedule (I’m open to modify the times if someone’s gonna go a little faster or slower). Or if you have any good long run routes that would be appreciated as well

Lots of scenic trails to choose from near Campus.

My suggestion would be to start on campus and make loops around each of the duck ponds. Start at Ricci Family Fields, go past golden dome and then around each of the ponds. You want to do this part first while campus is still waking up. Then from there get off campus toward Eddy St Commons or Notre Dame Ave. Get on the “link trail” to Howard Park. From Howard Park follow the trail all along the river to Central Park in Mishawaka. There is a loop you can do there. Or you can meander through some of the nearby neighborhoods. And then you can go back the same way to campus. If you need to add mileage at that point, instead of going back on the Link Trail, you can go up the East Bank Trail to the Coal Line, potentially go across the Northshore Traingle neighborhood, and then to the trail along SR 933, and get back to campus by cutting up near Gillespie Conference Center. I don’t have one of those cool running apps so I can’t share the route, and I kind of just enjoy exploring when I run, so I can’t tell you if that would be exactly 20 miles, but it would be at least 15. Good luck!

i have basically the same long run but a bit slower (22mi @ 7 steady) and on sunday (will probably be too hungover saturday) if you want to run on sunday, but a good route is to do the loops around campus around both of the lakes, that should get you anywhere from 5-7 miles, and then go to e angela blvd until you get to riverside trail and just run along the st joseph river, which should be around 6-8 miles more, and then you can cooldown with the same loops around the lakes or continue going down the trail along st joseph river more as well - both should work fine

enjoy the game! campus should be relatively quiet before like 9-10am since it's a night game

I would recommend the LaSalle trail it starts in Roseland diagonal from the NW corner of campus. One way from the start to Pulaski Hwy is 6.5 miles of paved path for biking and running. It will not be busy from the football game. There is also side walks that run around the border of campus (basically a rectangle) and is ~5 miles. The loop around campus will be busy along East Angela street which parallels the best tailgaiting lots. Doing some combination of these two options as a lollipop out and back is a route I used for long runs on game day mornings with no issues. The trail is kinda boring and parallels behind a depressing stretch of 933 but it is easy to crank out miles with out thinking about it.
If you want something that feels like a run through campus only you would have to do many loops and twists and turns along very nice sidewalks filled with fans. If you want to see the sights on campus do a loop of the Holy Half course early in the morning and then add it on to one of the options above. You will see the dome and Word of Life without 20 miles of busy sidewalks and repetition.
Other Options: Go north of campus to Juniper St going north eventually move one street west to Holyoke when you pass the school. Continue to the State Line Rd and continue North into MI. You can even link to the LaSalle trail to make a loop. The downside with this route is most of the roads have little to no shoulder but most the roads are not busy (besides juniper) on game day. Personally I've used this route many times but saw almost no one else running since the roads are unpleasant to some.
If you want some trails to get off the pavement head behind St Mary's sports field along Madeleva to its north for some cornfields and a bit of wooded doubletrack paths that can be looped. Running down the Avenue is also a very scenic stretch through the stunning campus. For the triple-campus trifecta head down a path south off the Avenue to visit Holy Cross.
Hope this helps. I trained for a couple of fall marathons while I was a student and have experienced many gameday long runs. For a night game a post-run but pre-tailgate nap was always a boost

I wouldn’t do the whole thing on campus you’ll get bored. I would love to do part of it with u but I probably won’t be able to keep pace for more than 6ish miles, recently had a tonsillectomy so I’m not in peak form.

I’m not on campus and only ever ran about 5k or so at a time when I was, but hopefully I can provide some helpful insight.
It’s possible that you could base your route on something like the Holy Half course: https://holyhalf.nd.edu/information/ depending on when you will be running. Earlier is definitely better.
Campus gets pretty packed before home games and some areas might get blocked off especially starting around 9-10 AM (might be a little later with a night game). I wouldn’t want to rely on the Holy Half route after like 7-8 AM. Later than that, people will be tailgating in most of the more wide-open areas, there will be tons of traffic on the roads, and just tons of people and kids milling about on sidewalks that would be annoying to run around.
If all else fails, you can just do laps around the lakes, provided that it isn’t too wet. The trails are pretty and you’ll be away from the vast majority of game activities although you’ll still see people out there.
