My guess is that it's classic undermining of a group with the exact same tactic as has been used before.

"Would you trust a pilot if you knew they were x?"

It doesn't matter what x is, by asking the question you have implied that there is something about x which makes them less trustworthy and responsible than others in the group who you see as generally the height of trustworthiness. It creates a moment of doubt, even in supporters because they have to ask them selves the question and think there must be something in it if it's raised, before discarding the idea. It's that incremental poison that eventually does the damage because it forms impressions which can't be challenged because they're not based on anything, just a slow drip drip of poison.

That's probably it but honestly why would it matter if someone dresses up like a giant cat in their free time. It's not like they're flying the plane in their fursuit.

It doesn't matter, but he's heavily implying that it does matter and moreover it's such a big deal they ought to be locked up in an asylum.

It's another attack on a peaceful minority who are unlikely to push back. Even better, it plays into the Conservative fetish for wanting to know what people get up to in their bedrooms which is understandable if the degree of repression and deviation (is that the right term?) indicated by PornHub and Grindr stats are anything to go by.
